Play Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse first. It is the one game with a clearly documented story connection to Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse: the new game is set in Paris in 1499, 23 years after Castlevania III, and follows Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor Belmont. Konami’s official character information identifies Sypha Belnades as Rose’s mother.
You do not need to finish Castlevania III to understand Belmont’s Curse. Konami has established the relationship and timeline, but has not described the older game as required preparation. Treat it as the priority for direct story context, then use the Castlevania Anniversary Collection only if you want a wider look at the early series.
The short answer: start with Castlevania III
Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse is the best preparation because it is Trevor Belmont’s story. Belmont’s Curse moves the family line forward to Rose Belmont, Trevor’s daughter, with Sypha Belnades identified as Rose’s mother. That makes Castlevania III the entry that most directly supplies the family and historical context for the new game.
Konami places Belmont’s Curse in Paris in 1499, 23 years after the events of Castlevania III. The time jump is large enough that the new game is not simply a continuation of the same adventure, but close enough for Trevor, Sypha and the earlier Dracula conflict to matter to the setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Classics that defined the Castlevania series.
- Includes the "History of Castlevania - Book of the Crescent Moon" ebook.
- This includes eight classic Castlevania games preserved on one disc with a full-color manual.
- The Castlevania Anniversary Collection on physical disc for the PlayStation 4. Also works on PlayStation 5. Region-free.
If you have time for only one older game, choose Castlevania III. If you want a broader survey of the franchise, add the Castlevania Anniversary Collection after it rather than replacing it.
What Castlevania III contributes to Belmont’s Curse
Trevor Belmont is the key connection
Trevor is the protagonist of Castlevania III, while Rose is the protagonist introduced for Belmont’s Curse. Playing Trevor’s game gives you the clearest perspective on the earlier generation of the Belmont family before the story shifts to his daughter.
Sypha links the family history
Konami’s official character page identifies Sypha as Rose’s mother. That makes Sypha more than a historical name in the new game’s background: she is part of Rose’s immediate family. Castlevania III is therefore useful for readers who want to recognize how Trevor and Sypha fit into the lineage that Rose inherits.

The new story is not set immediately after Castlevania III. Konami describes a 23-year gap and places Rose’s adventure in Paris in 1499. You can approach the older game as the previous generation’s chapter, not as a scene-by-scene prologue that must be completed immediately before launch.
Do you need to play it before the new game?
No. The available official material establishes a direct connection, but it does not say that players must complete Castlevania III to follow Belmont’s Curse. There is no confirmed mandatory play order and no published requirement that newcomers finish a particular number of classic games first.
Rank #2
- Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse | Night One Edition includes: Main Game, Alucard Style Costume, Digital Sound & Art Gallery, Trevor Style Costume, Sypha Style Costume, and Family's Grace (Relic).
- Medieval Paris, Where the Tolling Bells Herald the End - 1499: Paris is engulfed in flames as monstrous creatures suddenly emerge from the shadows. Armed with the legendary holy whip, the Vampire Killer, Trevor Belmont’s successor ventures into the burning streets and the looming castle to hunt down the beasts. Can they save the city from the brink of destruction?
- Satisfying Whip Action - The iconic whip of the series is now more important than ever! Crack your whip to move around freely like a trapeze artist! Master the whip mechanics and be creative to pounce on your prey like a wolf in fast-paced combats!
- A Large Selection of Weapons and Abilities - The whip is not the only tool at your disposal. You will need to strategically plan your next move in combat and make full use of all the weapons and abilities to stand a chance!
- Environment Hazards That Will make you grit your teeth - Biomes are packed with secrets, traps and puzzles. It is not just about muscles, it's about brains too!
That distinction matters. A game can be the most relevant predecessor without being homework. If you prefer to begin with the new release, you can do so and treat Castlevania III as optional background. You should expect to get more family context from the older game, but the evidence does not justify calling it a prerequisite.
- Play it first if Trevor, Sypha and Rose’s family connection are important to you.
- Skip it for now if you want to experience Rose’s story without committing to an older NES-era game.
- Return to it later if Belmont’s Curse makes you curious about the previous generation.
How the main options compare
These choices serve different purposes. Castlevania III is the direct narrative pick; the collection is the broad-history option.
| Option | Direct relevance to Rose | What it adds | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse | Highest | Trevor’s story, the previous generation, and the clearest bridge to Rose’s family history | Readers seeking the most relevant predecessor |
| Castlevania Anniversary Collection | Indirect, unless you select Castlevania III | A broader selection of early Castlevania games in one package | Readers who want franchise history beyond the direct link |
| Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest | Not established as a direct Rose connection | Exploration and puzzle-solving action-RPG design, according to Konami’s support description | Readers interested in a different early-series structure |
The collection includes Castlevania III, so it can satisfy both goals if you want one package rather than a single-game focus. Its broader contents are useful for historical context, but no source establishes the other included games as mandatory preparation for Belmont’s Curse.
What the Anniversary Collection is—and is not
A convenient survey of the early series
Konami described the Castlevania Anniversary Collection as a first step into the series and included Castlevania III alongside other early entries. That makes it a sensible choice for someone who wants to see how the series developed instead of playing only the one predecessor tied most closely to Rose.
Not a substitute for the direct story choice
Buying or accessing the collection does not change which game matters most to the new narrative. Select Castlevania III first if your question is specifically about Rose, Trevor and Sypha. Explore the rest only for wider series history or to discover which classic style you prefer.

- 17 Levels - Each one with its own atmosphere, foes and secrets to discover
- 5 Bosses - Made by the most sadistic of the devs, raised on the salt of the testers
- 150 or so weapons and skills - Spears, swords, bows, magic spells, shields, pets, frying pans etc; You name it, we got it
- Unlock the four original Dead Cells DLCs, giving you late-game content plus an entire new pathway to follow, with an alternative ending and tons of new enemies, weapons & outfits
- Battle through the corridors of Dracula’s Castle; Wield weapons against monsters to reach the throne room of the Dark Lord
Simon’s Quest is optional context
Konami’s support material characterizes Simon’s Quest as an exploration and puzzle-solving action RPG. That makes it a useful optional detour for players curious about a less linear early entry, not a documented chapter required to understand Rose’s role in Belmont’s Curse.

Konami called the collection a digital exclusive in its 2019 launch announcement. Do not assume that description means a physical edition is available, and do not treat current digital-store inventory as confirmed unless you check the relevant storefront yourself.
Choose a play plan that matches your goal
Plan A: the direct story route
- Play Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse.
- Note Trevor’s role and the place of Sypha in that earlier generation.
- Start Belmont’s Curse with the 23-year transition and Rose’s parentage in mind.
This is the cleanest route for a reader who wants context without turning the preparation into a franchise marathon.
Plan B: the broad history route
- Use the Castlevania Anniversary Collection as your entry point.
- Play Castlevania III before the other selections if Belmont’s Curse is your destination.
- Add other included games only when you want to compare early designs, tone or structure.
This route is appropriate when your interest extends beyond the new release. It gives you more historical range, but it also asks you to spend time on games whose direct connection to Rose has not been established.
Plan C: the newcomer route
- Begin with Belmont’s Curse when it releases.
- Use the stated Paris 1499 setting and Rose’s relationship to Trevor and Sypha as your initial orientation.
- Play Castlevania III afterward if you want to explore the family history behind the new story.
This is a valid choice because no official source says that Castlevania III must be completed first.

Release timing and listed platforms
As of October 13, 2026, Konami has announced October 15, 2026 as the release date for Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. The announced platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and Nintendo Switch. That date was still upcoming at the time of the announcement context summarized here, so availability can change after launch.
The platform announcement applies to the new game, not automatically to every older entry. Check the edition and storefront for the version you intend to play. A modern platform listing for Belmont’s Curse does not by itself confirm that Castlevania III is sold separately on the same system.

Collection route
The Castlevania Anniversary Collection is the most convenient documented way to approach several early entries together, including Castlevania III. Konami’s launch material described it as a digital-exclusive collection. Because storefront catalogs and regional availability can change, verify the current listing for your country and platform before purchasing.
Original NES cartridge route
An original Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse NES cartridge exists as a retro physical product category. Its condition, authenticity, included packaging and seller reliability vary from listing to listing. Treat any cartridge search as a used-market purchase: inspect photographs and the seller’s terms, and do not assume that a listing is genuine or currently in stock without checking it live.

You do not need original hardware to justify the story recommendation. The important choice is the game itself; the format is a matter of access, preservation and personal preference.

Common mistakes to avoid
Mistake: treating every classic game as required
Only Castlevania III has the clearly documented direct link to Rose’s family story in the available official information. The broader collection is optional context, not a checklist of mandatory entries.
Mistake: assuming the timeline is immediate
There are 23 years between Castlevania III and Belmont’s Curse. Expect a generational continuation set in a different place and period, not an uninterrupted next chapter.
Mistake: confusing historical interest with narrative necessity
Simon’s Quest and other early games may be worthwhile for their design and place in the series, but their value is historical or stylistic unless Konami later identifies a specific story connection. Do not promise that they explain Rose’s background.
Mistake: relying on an old platform list
The announced release platforms for Belmont’s Curse are current as of October 13, 2026. Storefront support, editions and regional access can change, so confirm the listing when you are ready to play.
Quick Recap
A practical decision rule
- One game: choose Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse.
- Several games: start with Castlevania III, then use the Castlevania Anniversary Collection to sample the wider early catalog.
- No retro preparation: play Belmont’s Curse directly; the official material does not make prior completion compulsory.
- Interest in exploration and puzzles: add Simon’s Quest as optional historical context, not as a Rose-focused prerequisite.
