Cars with five-cylinder engines have come from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Volkswagen, Ford, Acura, Fiat, Lancia, General Motors, Land Rover and other manufacturers. They include gasoline and diesel engines, naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions, and both conventional inline-five and narrow-angle VR5 layouts.

The cylinder count alone does not identify a specific engine. A model may have received different engines by year, trim, body style or country. For any individual car, confirm the model year, engine code, market specification and original equipment before assuming that it has a five-cylinder engine.

What does “five-cylinder engine” mean?

A five-cylinder engine has five combustion chambers arranged around one crankshaft. Most automotive examples are inline-fives, with all cylinders in one row. Volkswagen’s VR5 is a significant exception: its cylinders are arranged in a narrow-angle staggered bank, making it shorter than a conventional inline engine. Both layouts share the same cylinder count but are different engine families.

Gasoline and diesel versions

Five-cylinder engines have been built as spark-ignition gasoline engines and compression-ignition diesels. Some were naturally aspirated, while others used turbochargers. Mercedes-Benz’s OM617 began as a diesel, Audi used the configuration for gasoline and diesel engines, Volvo offered gasoline, diesel and bi-fuel variants, and Fiat/Lancia produced several gasoline and 2.4-liter JTD diesel families.

Why many five-cylinders sound distinctive

Audi describes its five-cylinder firing order as “1-2-4-5-3.” Combustion events are separated by 144 degrees of crankshaft rotation, alternating between adjacent and more distant cylinder pairings. That timing can produce the uneven, distinctive exhaust note associated with some turbocharged five-cylinder cars, but sound also depends on the crankshaft, intake, exhaust and engine calibration. Not every five-cylinder sounds the same.

Which car had the first production five-cylinder?

The earliest notable series-production passenger-car example identified in the cited history is the Mercedes-Benz 240D 3.0, introduced in 1974 with the OM617 diesel. Classic & Sports Car describes it as the first five-cylinder passenger-car engine to enter production; its historical account is available at Classic & Sports Car.

This is separate from Audi’s five-cylinder history. Audi dates its own first five-cylinder to the second-generation Audi 100 in 1976, with customer deliveries of the 100 5E beginning in March 1977. The two milestones should not be merged into a single launch.

Mercedes-Benz: the diesel pioneer

The OM617 made the 240D 3.0 historically important, but later Mercedes applications are not interchangeable by default. The 300D, 300CD, 300SD and some G-Class vehicles used related OM617 variants, including turbocharged versions in certain markets. Later OM602 and OM612-family diesels powered selected 190D, E-Class, M-Class, G-Class, Sprinter and Jeep Grand Cherokee applications. Engine code, emissions equipment and country specification matter more than the model badge.

Audi: the longest-running performance lineage

Audi’s sequence moved from the 100 5E and 5D to the turbocharged 200 5T, quattro and Sport quattro. Later milestones included the 100 TDI, S2, RS2 Avant, S6, TT RS, RS Q3 and RS 3. Audi’s 2025 account presents the modern 2.5 TFSI as a continuation of that tradition, but the early engines and later 2.5 TFSI are not one unchanged design. Audi also used different names and outputs in different markets, particularly around the 5000, 100 and 200.

Volvo and Ford performance cars

Volvo’s 850 introduced a transverse five-cylinder in 1991. Related five-cylinder applications followed in the S70, V70, C70, S40, V40, S60, V60, XC60, XC70 and XC90 families, with gasoline, diesel and bi-fuel variants depending on market. The 850 T-5R, S60 R and V70 R are notable high-output examples.

Selected European Focus ST, Focus RS and RS500 models used a Volvo-derived 2.5-liter turbocharged five. The RS500’s 345-hp figure belongs to that limited variant and should not be applied to every Focus ST or RS. Road & Track’s historical feature provides additional context on Volvo and Ford applications: The Rise and Fall of the Five-Cylinder Engine.

Volkswagen’s inline-five and VR5

U.S.-market Volkswagen Jetta, Golf and New Beetle models used a 2.5-liter inline-five from 2005, and the U.S. Passat received it in 2012. Overseas Volkswagen products also used a 2.3-liter VR5 in selected Golf/Bora/Jetta, Passat and New Beetle versions, as well as the SEAT Toledo. Because the VR5 is a narrow-angle layout, it should not be treated as the same engine as Volkswagen’s conventional inline-five.

Acura, General Motors and other applications

Acura’s North American Vigor used a longitudinal 2.5-liter five-cylinder, followed by the 2.5 TL; related Honda sedans in Japan had their own market-specific applications. General Motors installed a 3.5-liter inline-five in selected Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups beginning in 2004 and also offered it in the Hummer H3.

Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo used multiple five-cylinder gasoline and diesel families in cars such as the Fiat Coupé, Bravo/Brava, Marea, Lancia Kappa and Thesis, and Alfa Romeo 156, 159, 166, Spider and Brera. Land Rover’s Td5 was an overseas-market 2.5-liter diesel used in selected Discovery Series II and Defender vehicles. Ford Duratorq five-cylinder diesels appeared in selected non-U.S. Ranger, Mazda BT-50 and Transit applications. Volkswagen Transporter and EuroVan variants are among additional examples discussed in broad model surveys.

How the major five-cylinder types compare

Comparison point What it tells you Why it matters
Inline versus VR layout Inline engines place all five cylinders in one row; the VR5 uses a narrow-angle staggered arrangement. Layout affects packaging, cylinder-head design and parts compatibility. A VR5 component is not automatically interchangeable with an inline-five part.
Gasoline versus diesel Gasoline engines use spark ignition; diesels use compression ignition. Fuel system, emissions equipment, operating characteristics and service procedures differ substantially.
Naturally aspirated versus turbocharged A naturally aspirated engine breathes at atmospheric pressure; a turbocharged engine forces additional air into the cylinders. Turbo and non-turbo versions can have different pistons, cooling, intake, exhaust, control software and output even when displacement is similar.
Passenger car versus truck or van The same cylinder count appears in sedans, wagons, hatchbacks, SUVs, pickups and commercial vans. Cooling, gearing, emissions calibration and service parts follow the application, not merely the number of cylinders.
Original market European, North American, Japanese and other versions may use different engines under similar names. VIN records, emissions labels and local brochures are essential when importing or buying a used example.

How to identify the engine in a specific car

Use the vehicle’s original documentation rather than relying on a trim name, a sound or an online list. Follow this order:

  1. Record the complete identity: model, body style, model year, trim, transmission and country where it was first sold.
  2. Find the engine code: check the VIN build record, emissions label, engine stamping, service documentation or the manufacturer’s parts catalog. A VIN decoder can identify the build configuration, but confirm it against physical documentation.
  3. Check displacement and induction: distinguish a 2.3-liter VR5 from a 2.5-liter inline-five, and naturally aspirated, turbocharged and diesel versions with similar badges.
  4. Confirm market-specific equipment: emissions rules, power ratings and available engines often differed between North America, Europe, Japan and other regions.
  5. Match the body style: an engine offered in a sedan may not have been offered in the wagon, coupe, pickup, SUV or van version of the same family.
  6. Verify the original equipment before ordering parts: use the engine code and VIN together. A replacement engine or an imported vehicle may not match the specification implied by its badge.

Common identification pitfalls

  • Assuming every car in a model line shares one engine: the Audi 100, Volvo XC90 and Volkswagen Passat each covered multiple engine families and markets.
  • Confusing displacement with cylinder count: a 2.5-liter engine may be a five-cylinder, but displacement alone does not prove the layout or engine family.
  • Treating a performance badge as proof: names such as ST, RS, R or S identify a version, not a universal engine specification across all countries.
  • Relying on a replacement engine’s appearance: an imported or swapped engine can leave the original badge and documents misleading.
  • Using one power figure for every year: the quoted Audi, Ford and other outputs belong to particular versions and should not be transferred to another trim or market.

Are five-cylinder cars still made?

Audi’s December 3, 2025 release described the RS 3’s 2.5 TFSI as continuing the company’s five-cylinder tradition and gave 294 kW (400 PS) and 500 Nm for the version discussed. That does not establish availability in every country, model year or trim, and it is not evidence that the RS 3 is the only current five-cylinder car worldwide. Check the local manufacturer configurator and brochure for the exact market.

The older Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Volkswagen, Ford, Acura, General Motors, Fiat/Lancia and Land Rover examples above are historical or used-car applications, not current new-car recommendations. Present used prices, reliability, fuel economy, safety and maintenance costs depend on the individual vehicle and were not established by the cited sources. A five-cylinder badge therefore cannot be used as a shortcut for expected ownership cost or condition.

Audi’s 50-year exhibition and the five-cylinder’s legacy

In a July 31, 2026 release about a special exhibition at the Audi museum mobile, Audi said the display included seven engine exhibits and fourteen vehicles. Those are exhibition counts, not a count of all five-cylinder cars. The release attributes this comment to Stefan Felber, curator of the Audi museum mobile exhibition:

“50 years of the five-cylinder engine is a very special anniversary for Audi: few technologies evoke such strong emotions or have shaped the brand’s image so profoundly over the past five decades. That’s why so many Audi fans and museum visitors have asked us whether we’d mark this anniversary with a special exhibition — a wish we were only too happy to fulfill.”

The announcement and quotation are in Audi’s release, “1-2-4-5-3: 50 years of Audi five-cylinder engines”. Felber’s role and the quotation apply to that exhibition announcement, not to every five-cylinder engine made by other manufacturers.

What to remember when comparing five-cylinder cars

  • Engine family: identify the code, not just the manufacturer or model.
  • Layout: distinguish an inline-five from Volkswagen’s narrow-angle VR5.
  • Fuel and induction: gasoline, diesel, naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions have different designs and operating characteristics.
  • Application: compare model year, market, body style and original role; a commercial diesel and a turbocharged performance engine are not equivalent because both have five cylinders.
  • Documentation: confirm the individual vehicle by VIN, engine code, emissions label or manufacturer documentation before making a fitment or parts decision.

Is every Audi five-cylinder engine the same?

No. Audi’s 1970s naturally aspirated engines, the turbocharged 200 5T and quattro engines, the diesel 100 TDI, the S2 and RS2 engines, and the later 2.5 TFSI are successive designs and applications. Names, outputs and equipment also changed by market and model year.

What is the difference between Volkswagen’s VR5 and an inline-five?

An inline-five places all five cylinders in one row. The VR5 uses a narrow-angle staggered-cylinder layout. Volkswagen used the 2.3-liter VR5 in selected overseas Golf/Bora/Jetta, Passat, New Beetle and SEAT Toledo applications from approximately 1997 to 2005, while the U.S. 2.5-liter Volkswagen engine was a conventional inline-five.

How can I confirm whether a used car has five cylinders?

Record the full model, year, trim, body style and original sales market. Then compare the VIN build record, emissions label, engine stamping, service documents and manufacturer parts information. Confirm the engine code and displacement before ordering parts; a badge, sound or replacement engine is not sufficient proof.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are five-cylinder engines still available in new cars?

Audi’s December 3, 2025 release described the RS 3’s 2.5 TFSI as continuing Audi’s five-cylinder tradition and listed 294 kW (400 PS) and 500 Nm for the version discussed. Availability varies by country, model year and trim, so consult the local Audi configurator or brochure. The statement does not establish a worldwide inventory or exclusivity.

Do all five-cylinder engines have the same sound?

No. Audi identifies a 1-2-4-5-3 firing order with combustion intervals 144 degrees apart, but crankshaft design, intake, exhaust and calibration also shape the sound. A turbocharged gasoline five, a naturally aspirated engine and a diesel can sound very different.

Are five-cylinder cars expensive to run?

Cylinder count alone does not establish purchase price, reliability, fuel economy, maintenance cost or safety. Those factors depend on the exact engine family, vehicle, age, condition, market and service history. The cited model histories do not provide a universal operating-cost comparison.

The Bottom Line

Five-cylinder cars range from the 1974 Mercedes-Benz 240D 3.0 and Audi’s 1970s pioneers to Volvo performance cars, Volkswagen inline-five and VR5 models, Ford hatchbacks, Acura sedans, GM pickups and modern Audi RS variants. Treat “five-cylinder” as a starting description, not a complete specification: verify the engine code, VIN, model year, body style and original market before comparing cars, confirming fitment or estimating ownership costs.
