The right cable modem or router setup is the one your internet provider approves for your exact service tier. A router alone cannot connect directly to cable internet: you need an approved cable modem, either as a separate device or inside a modem-router gateway. If you want one combined unit, the NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX30S is one example to check—not a universal recommendation. Its manufacturer says it supports selected cable providers, but excludes bundled cable voice and fiber service.
Start with your provider and speed tier
Before comparing features, check your cable provider’s current equipment list for the exact model number and your subscribed plan. NETGEAR distinguishes between devices an ISP has certified—tested and guaranteed by that provider—and devices described as compatible because they meet requirements and should work. Those terms are not interchangeable, and compatibility can depend on the exact model. See NETGEAR’s compatibility guidance.
Then confirm the speed tier, not just the provider name. A device listed as compatible with a provider may not support every plan or configuration. NETGEAR specifically tells buyers to check speed-tier compatibility for the CAX30S. Verify the model and tier with your ISP before purchasing, and check again if you later upgrade your service.
Choose between a modem, a gateway, and separate devices
| Setup | What it does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Cable modem | Connects your home network to the cable service; it does not provide Wi-Fi by itself. | ISP approval for the exact model and tier, plus whether you already have a router. |
| Modem-router gateway | Combines the cable modem and Wi-Fi router in one device. | ISP and tier support, required features, and support for any bundled voice service. |
| Separate modem and router | The modem connects to cable service; the router manages the home network and Wi-Fi. | ISP approval for the modem. Connect the router to the modem, rather than directly to the cable line. |
A standalone router does not replace the cable modem. NETGEAR explains that its routers connect to the upstream device required by the internet technology; for cable service, that means an ISP-compatible cable modem or gateway. Its setup guidance is at NETGEAR’s router compatibility page.

Two NETGEAR gateway examples to investigate
The following models illustrate the kinds of specifications you may encounter. Their Wi-Fi figures are manufacturer-advertised specifications, not independent measurements of speed, coverage, or performance in a particular home.
| Model | Manufacturer-stated features | Important limits to check |
|---|---|---|
| NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX30S | DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem and Wi-Fi 6 router in one unit; advertised Wi-Fi speeds up to 2.7 Gbps. | NETGEAR names Xfinity, Spectrum, and Cox and advises checking speed-tier compatibility. The product page says it does not support bundled cable voice services or fiber. |
| NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX80 | DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem and Wi-Fi 6 router in one unit; advertised Wi-Fi speeds up to 6 Gbps. | NETGEAR says it does not support bundled cable voice services or fiber. Confirm provider and tier support before buying. |
Specifications and exclusions are from the manufacturers’ product pages: NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX30S and NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX80. A higher advertised Wi-Fi rate does not establish that a device is faster in every home, or that your ISP supports it on your plan.

Check voice service and connection type
If your cable package includes a landline, confirm that the modem or gateway supports your provider’s voice service. The CAX30S and CAX80 pages exclude bundled cable voice; neither should be assumed suitable for a plan that requires that feature. If your home has fiber service, these cable gateway examples are not substitutes for the equipment that fiber service requires. Confirm the connection type and required terminal equipment with your provider.

- Find the exact model number on your ISP’s equipment list and confirm approval for your speed tier.
- Decide whether you need a modem only, a combined gateway, or a separate modem and router.
- Check whether your plan requires provider voice service and whether the device supports it.
- Compare the device’s wired connections and Wi-Fi features with your subscribed plan and home needs; the product specifications cited here do not establish real-world coverage or throughput.
- Consider the purchase cost alongside any equipment charge from your ISP, using the terms offered to you.
When a provider’s list or support representative does not clearly confirm a model and tier, ask before purchasing. A familiar brand name or a broad compatibility statement is not a substitute for that confirmation.
