For a laptop that can handle both professional applications and games, start with a mobile workstation with a discrete GPU. The Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 and HP ZBook Studio G11 are relevant candidates, but the right choice depends on the exact graphics configuration, display, and software you use. If your work does not require certified professional graphics, a gaming laptop such as the ASUS TUF A16 may also be worth considering.
How to choose a laptop for work and gaming
There is no universal best model for this combination. Start by identifying the specific game and professional application you need to run, then check the laptop’s exact configuration against both workloads. A model name alone does not tell you which GPU, display, memory, or regional configuration you will receive.
- Check your work software’s hardware requirements. For CAD, engineering, or design applications, look up the software maker’s qualified hardware list. A professional GPU and supported drivers may matter for certified workflows.
- Choose the GPU for the actual mix of work and play. A workstation with GeForce graphics may suit gaming more naturally; a professional RTX configuration may be more appropriate when your work application depends on supported hardware. Neither label, by itself, establishes how well a particular game will run.
- Verify the panel. Resolution and refresh rate vary by configuration. A higher refresh rate can be useful for gaming, but confirm that the particular SKU includes the display you want.
- Consider portability and memory needs. Compare the machine’s size and weight with how often you travel, and check whether its memory can meet your workload now and later.
- Confirm the exact SKU and current availability before buying. Configurations and regional availability can differ; check the manufacturer or seller listing and the software vendor’s compatibility information.

Important configuration and generation limits
ThinkPad P1 generations are not interchangeable
RTINGS’ review covers the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7, a 2024 model, and its observations should not be assumed to apply to every Gen 7 configuration or later models. Lenovo identifies the P1 Gen 9 as a 16-inch mobile workstation, but that product page does not establish that it shares the Gen 7’s gaming characteristics.
Memory can constrain an otherwise capable workstation
For the Precision 5690, RTINGS notes a 64GB ceiling and soldered memory. Check the memory configuration before purchase if your professional work involves large projects or you expect to keep the laptop for several years.

Do not infer gaming results from a product category
The available model comparisons do not establish game frame rates for every listed configuration. GPU choice, display, and laptop SKU matter; look for evidence that matches the exact configuration and game you care about rather than treating “workstation” or “gaming laptop” as a performance guarantee.
