The best Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar setup depends on the room, the programme and your TV’s audio signal. Bose does not publish one universal numeric preset for dialogue, music or movies. Instead, use the Bose app’s Audio controls: SpeechClarity for voices, bass and treble for tonal balance, and equalization, surround and height controls for spatial presentation. Start with small changes, listen to a familiar scene or track, and change one control at a time.
What you can actually adjust
The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar exposes its main sound controls in the Bose app. Bose’s tone-control instructions cover bass and treble, while Bose’s Lifestyle Collection announcement also identifies equalization, surround and height-level controls. SpeechClarity is the dedicated speech-enhancement feature; it isolates and enhances dialogue rather than acting as a general volume boost.
Those controls affect different parts of what you hear:
- SpeechClarity: brings spoken words forward in a mix.
- Bass: changes low-frequency weight, including impact from effects and music.
- Treble: changes high-frequency brightness and articulation.
- Equalization: shapes tonal balance where the app exposes those controls.
- Surround: changes the apparent width and envelopment of the sound field.
- Height: changes the strength of the overhead or elevated presentation.
There is no Bose-prescribed number that is correct for every room. A setting that clarifies a heavily compressed news broadcast can make a well-recorded film soundtrack sound too forward, so treat the suggestions below as listening-based starting points, not official Bose presets.

How to find the settings in the Bose app
- Open the Bose app and select the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar. If more than one Bose product is configured, select the soundbar before changing anything.
- Tap Audio. If Audio is not visible, tap the product-control icon first, then open the soundbar controls.
- Use the plus and minus controls for Bass and Treble. Make one small change, listen, and then decide whether to keep it.
- Look for SpeechClarity, equalization, surround and height controls in the same audio-control area. The exact arrangement can vary with the app version and connected products.
- If a Bose bass module is connected, open its separate Bass Module controls. Its output level is independent of the soundbar’s bass control.
Write down the original position before experimenting. That gives you a reliable way back if a change sounds worse on another programme.
Best starting approach for dialogue and speech-led TV
1. Raise SpeechClarity only as far as necessary
Start playback of a programme with voices you know well. Increase SpeechClarity gradually until consonants and quieter lines are easier to follow, then stop. If voices begin to sound unnaturally isolated, nasal or over-emphasised, reduce the setting one step. Bose documents SpeechClarity as adjustable enhancement, but does not specify a universal level or a movie-specific target.
2. Keep bass and treble changes restrained
Too much low-frequency energy can mask the lower part of speech, especially in a reflective room or when a bass module is turned up. Excessive treble can make sibilants and soundtrack effects sharp. Begin with both tone controls near their neutral positions, then make a small adjustment to one control at a time. These are general listening principles, not a measured performance claim about this soundbar.

3. Use a consistent test scene
Compare the same 30–60 seconds of dialogue after each change. A news presenter, a quiet drama conversation and a loud action scene stress the system differently. If a setting helps one but harms the others, favour intelligibility at your normal listening volume and leave the tone controls closer to neutral.

4. If clarity is still poor, check the signal and room
Do not keep increasing SpeechClarity indefinitely. Confirm the TV/source format and run CustomTune using the procedure below. Bose’s poor-sound-quality guidance explains that digital audio devices may expose format choices and recommends Dolby Digital 5.1 when it is available and supported; the correct option still depends on your TV and source.
Music: preserve the recording before adding effects
Start near neutral
For music, begin with bass and treble near their neutral positions and disable any dramatic tonal change you made for television. Use a familiar recording with vocals, acoustic instruments and a strong rhythm section. Increase bass only until the track has the weight you expect; stop if kick drums become thick or bass notes blur together. Adjust treble only enough to restore detail if the room or recording sounds dull.
Match the spatial effect to the track
Surround and height processing can make a spacious recording feel larger, but a narrowly mixed stereo track may sound less natural when the effect is strong. If the presentation feels artificially wide or voices pull away from the centre, lower surround or height a little and compare again. Bose documents these controls but does not provide genre-specific numeric settings.

Very loud playback can make bass and treble seem more impressive than they are at everyday levels. Set the volume where you normally listen, change one control, and return to the same passage. Keep a setting only if it improves several parts of the recording rather than one attention-grabbing moment.

Movies: get the signal path right before tuning effects
Use the TV’s ARC or eARC connection correctly
Connect the soundbar to the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port. Bose recommends eARC for getting the most from the soundbar. ARC does not carry lossless formats, and the Dolby formats available over ARC vary by television and model. If your TV offers an audio-output or digital-format menu, choose the highest format that both the TV and source support rather than forcing an incompatible option.
Use SpeechClarity sparingly on film mixes
Film soundtracks deliberately place voices, ambience, music and effects at different levels. Raise SpeechClarity only enough to follow quiet lines, then check a scene with effects and music. If the dialogue suddenly dominates the centre of the mix, back it down.
Set surround and height for the room, not the box
Increase surround or height if you want a wider, more enveloping presentation and your seating position supports it. Reduce either control if reflections make effects distracting or if the soundtrack loses a stable centre image. The soundbar can play Dolby Atmos by itself; Bose says optional Lifestyle Ultra Speakers add a fuller wraparound experience, but they are not required for Atmos playback or for changing the app settings.

Run CustomTune before chasing equalization
Bose calls its room-calibration process CustomTune. The soundbar plays test sounds while the microphone in an iOS or Android phone measures the listening environment as a reference. Bose describes the process as compatible with most iOS and Android mobile devices. Open the Bose app, choose the soundbar and follow the CustomTune prompts exactly, holding the phone where the app requests.

Calibration is especially worthwhile after moving the soundbar, changing furniture or adding a bass module. Bose’s support guidance recommends CustomTune when sound quality is poor because rooms change how reflected and direct sound combine. Keep the room quiet during the measurement and do not cover the phone’s microphones.
Placement changes that can matter more than EQ
Bose says the soundbar works best centred under the TV on a flat, stable, level surface or mounted with the Bose Soundbar Wall Bracket. Place it near the front edge of a cabinet or mantle. Do not put it inside a shelf that blocks the top or sides, because obstructions can alter the intended dispersion and height effect.
For wall mounting, leave at least 4 inches (10 cm) between the soundbar and the TV. Bose does not recommend mounting it above the TV. Correct placement gives SpeechClarity and the surround/height processing a better starting point; otherwise you may try to compensate for an obstruction with extreme tone settings.
A repeatable way to compare dialogue, music and movie settings
Use three short reference clips: a speech-led programme, a familiar music track and a film scene with quiet dialogue followed by effects. For each clip, compare the same six characteristics:

Change one control at a time and return to the same clip after every adjustment. This simple method tells you which change helped instead of letting several simultaneous changes hide the cause.
Troubleshooting when the sound still seems wrong
Dialogue is quiet even with modest SpeechClarity
- Confirm that the soundbar is selected in the Bose app before editing Audio controls.
- Check the TV or source device’s digital-audio format. Bose’s poor-sound-quality guidance says Dolby Digital 5.1 is an appropriate choice when available and supported.
- Verify the HDMI cable is connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC port, not an ordinary HDMI input.
- Run CustomTune after checking placement and source format.
Bass is boomy or overwhelms speech
- Lower the soundbar bass control first, then check the separate Bass Module level if one is installed.
- Move the soundbar toward the front of the cabinet if it is recessed or enclosed.
- Re-run CustomTune after furniture or subwoofer placement changes.
Music sounds too processed
- Return bass and treble near neutral.
- Reduce surround and height until the centre image is stable.
- Compare a stereo recording with an Atmos or multichannel film; a setting that suits one signal type may not suit the other.
Atmos or multichannel audio does not appear as expected
- Use eARC where the TV supports it, since Bose says ARC’s lossless and Dolby-format support varies by TV and model.
- Check the source device’s output setting and the TV’s pass-through or digital-audio option.
- Remember that optional Lifestyle Ultra Speakers expand the wraparound field but are not required for the soundbar to play Atmos.
Optional hardware and when it matters
The Bose Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer and compatible Lifestyle Ultra Speakers are optional system additions, not prerequisites for changing dialogue, music or movie settings. A bass module adds a separate output-level control; surround speakers can expand the physical wraparound field. If you add either, rerun CustomTune and recheck your bass, surround and height adjustments rather than assuming the previous balance still applies.
For installation, Bose also documents a Soundbar Wall Bracket. Follow the clearance guidance above and keep the soundbar centred relative to the TV. Hardware expansion should solve a coverage or low-frequency requirement; it should not be used to compensate for an obstructed soundbar or an incorrect TV audio format.
