The best Bluetooth setting depends on what sounds wrong. Change EQ or hearing accommodations for tonal problems, use a higher-quality codec only when both the phone and earbuds support it, and troubleshoot Windows microphone modes when music becomes thin or mono during calls. Codec and menu names vary by device, operating-system version, drivers and earbud firmware, so treat compatibility and stability as part of sound quality.
Start with the symptom, not the codec name
Bluetooth audio problems usually fall into four different categories. Each calls for a different setting:

Before comparing settings, keep the listening volume the same. A louder option often seems better even when the change is only level. Use a familiar track with vocals, bass and cymbals, and test in the place where you normally listen.

Improve tonal balance with EQ or hearing accommodations
Use EQ for a preference or a specific defect
Equalization changes the relative level of frequency ranges. A small bass cut can reduce boom; a modest upper-mid boost can make speech clearer; a treble reduction can soften hiss or sharp cymbals. Make one change at a time and use narrow adjustments rather than immediately applying an extreme preset. If your earbud manufacturer’s app offers a custom EQ, it is usually the most direct control because it is stored or applied for that model.

EQ cannot repair a blocked nozzle, a poor seal, a damaged driver or a Bluetooth connection that is dropping packets. Check fit and cleanliness before assuming a wireless setting is responsible. If only one side sounds quieter, use balance controls or inspect the earbud rather than trying to compensate with a large EQ change.
Apple Headphone Accommodations
On supported Apple headphones, iPhone and iPad include a sample-based personalization flow. Open Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual → Headphone Accommodations. Turn on the feature, listen to Apple’s audio samples and choose the profile that best matches your hearing preference. You can then adjust tone and amplification manually. Apple documents support for listed AirPods, Beats and wired EarPods families running iOS or iPadOS 14 or later; model and operating-system support differ, so a missing menu means the connected headset may not qualify.
Headphone Accommodations can apply to media and calls in supported use cases. Keep left-right balance centered unless you have a genuine channel imbalance or hearing difference. Some newer AirPods models also expose a Custom EQ capability, but the exact controls depend on the model and current software. This is a personalization tool, not a Bluetooth codec selector.

Choose a Bluetooth codec only when both ends support it
A codec compresses and transports audio between the sending device and the earbuds. Android’s Bluetooth documentation explains that its A2DP stack negotiates a codec supported by both endpoints: the phone and the connected audio sink. You cannot force LDAC, aptX, AAC or another option that the earbuds, phone implementation or firmware does not provide. Manufacturers can set priorities, and some proprietary codecs require separate licensing.
Android’s platform documentation lists SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD and LDAC among codecs supported by Android 8.0 A2DP devices. That is a platform capability description, not a promise that a current phone in every region, firmware version or earbud combination exposes all of them. A device maker can omit a codec or change its priority.
How to inspect codec controls on Android
- Open the connected earbuds in Settings → Connected devices (the wording varies by Android manufacturer), or open the earbuds’ companion app.
- Look for an HD audio, Bluetooth audio codec or wireless-quality control. If the phone displays the active codec, record it before changing anything.
- Choose an option that is explicitly available for that connection. Play familiar tracks at matched volume and walk around your normal listening area.
- Keep the setting only if the connection remains reliable. Revert when you hear skips, reconnects or delayed audio.
Developer options can expose diagnostic codec selectors on some Android builds, but they are not a universal sound-quality upgrade. They may show options that the connected earbuds cannot actually use, or the system may silently fall back after negotiation. Use the active-codec display, not the name of a preferred codec, as confirmation.

Balance quality and reliability on Android Bluetooth
Some Android phones expose a manufacturer-specific wireless playback preference. On applicable devices, Sony documents this route: Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Bluetooth → Wireless playback quality. Priority on sound quality favors the quality-oriented mode; Priority on stable connection favors fewer interruptions. Sony warns that the sound-quality choice can make the connection unstable depending on the environment.
Use quality priority in a quiet radio environment only if it remains dependable. Crowded offices, busy streets, a phone in a bag, distance and body blockage can make a theoretically higher-quality mode less pleasant than a stable one. Menu availability and the result depend on the phone, earbuds and negotiated codec.

Why Windows earbuds sound worse when the microphone is active
Classic Bluetooth: A2DP versus HFP
Windows Classic Bluetooth uses the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) for stereo media playback. When an application needs the earbud microphone, it can switch to the Hands-Free Profile (HFP), which supports microphone capture with mono playback. That profile change is why music may suddenly sound narrow, compressed or telephone-like during a meeting, game chat or voice call. It is a transport limitation, not necessarily a defective earbud.

Microsoft’s Windows codec table varies by release. For example, it lists AAC support beginning with Windows 11 version 21H2. It lists aptX Adaptive only on select Windows 11 version 24H2 devices with compatible Qualcomm Bluetooth radios. Codec names are therefore not universal Windows toggles: the PC radio, drivers, operating system and earbuds all have to support the same capability.
Windows 11 LE Audio stereo while using the mic
Windows 11 LE Audio can keep stereo playback while the microphone is active, but only when every required component supports it: Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, integrated Bluetooth LE support, suitable manufacturer drivers and compatible earbuds. If your PC or headset lacks one of those pieces, Windows uses a compatibility path instead.

When LE Audio stereo-with-microphone causes glitches or lost audio, Microsoft recommends trying mono for compatibility. A stable mono conversation is preferable to intermittent stereo. If the option is absent, update the PC manufacturer’s Bluetooth and audio drivers only from a source appropriate to your model, then verify that the earbuds themselves advertise LE Audio; an operating-system update alone cannot add support to incompatible hardware.

Fix Windows output and format before changing hardware
- Open Settings → System → Sound and select the earbuds as the current output device. Also check the per-app output in Volume mixer if only one program is wrong.
- Disconnect other Bluetooth speakers or headsets temporarily so Windows cannot select the wrong endpoint.
- Open the earbuds’ output properties and inspect the available format. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance gives 2 channel, 16 bit, 48,000 Hz as a format to try for Bluetooth audio problems. This is a troubleshooting setting, not proof that it improves every already-working headset.
- If sound changes only when the microphone is selected, check whether the application is choosing a hands-free input/output pair. Select a different microphone for the call if you need to preserve A2DP stereo, or use a supported LE Audio mode.
- Run Windows Bluetooth and audio troubleshooters, then install compatible Bluetooth and audio drivers from the PC manufacturer. Confirm that the adapter supports A2DP when you need higher-quality stereo streaming.
Do not judge a format change by a single volume jump. Match levels, replay the same passages and test both normal playback and a microphone-active scenario.
A practical order of operations for any phone or PC
- Identify the symptom. Decide whether you are correcting tone, channel balance, dropouts, microphone-related degradation or a wrong Windows output.
- Correct physical causes. Reseat the earbuds, check the seal, clean blocked grilles and charge both earbuds. These steps prevent you from masking a fit or hardware fault with software.
- Adjust EQ or accommodations for tonal preference. Make small changes and listen to the built-in Apple samples when using Headphone Accommodations.
- Verify compatibility before selecting a codec. Use only options shown as available for the connected phone and earbuds. Confirm the active codec when the device provides that information.
- Test stability in your real environment. Walk, turn your head and place the phone where it normally sits. Return to stable-connection mode at the first sign of repeated interruptions.
- On Windows, isolate microphone behavior. Compare music with no microphone use, Classic HFP active and LE Audio stereo active when supported.
- Retest at matched volume. Keep the setting that solves your actual problem, not the one with the most impressive label.
How to compare settings without fooling yourself
Compare two choices on separate axes instead of declaring one codec universally “best.” For EQ and accommodations, judge tonal preference and vocal intelligibility. For wireless-quality modes, count interruptions in the location where you listen. For microphone use, check whether stereo is retained and whether speech remains intelligible. For compatibility, record the phone or PC model, operating-system version, Bluetooth radio and earbud model.
Run each comparison for several minutes with the same track sequence and matched loudness. A setting that sounds excellent for five minutes but drops out on your commute is not an improvement for that use. Likewise, a codec label does not predict the result when antenna design, firmware, distance and interference differ.

- Unsupported endpoint: The phone cannot negotiate a codec the earbuds do not support, and vice versa.
- Unstable radio conditions: A quality-priority mode can create audible interruptions; stable mode is the appropriate fix.
- Classic Bluetooth microphone mode: HFP’s mono playback behavior explains many call-time quality complaints.
- Missing Windows LE Audio prerequisites: Version 24H2, compatible integrated Bluetooth LE hardware, drivers and earbuds are all required for stereo while the mic is active.
- Wrong output or format: Windows may be routing audio elsewhere or using a format that needs troubleshooting before hardware replacement.
- Hardware or fit issue: Uneven volume, rattling, blocked meshes or a poor seal are not solved by codec selection.
There is no single Bluetooth switch that makes every earbud sound better. Start with the symptom, make the smallest relevant change, and keep the option that remains compatible and reliable in the way you actually listen.
