The right Beyerdynamic headphones depend on whether you need an open or closed design, an integrated microphone, and a connection your device can drive comfortably. For gaming in a quiet room, consider the open-back TYGR 300 R; for a closed gaming headset with a mic, the MMX 300 PRO is the most direct fit in this shortlist. The other options are studio headphones that can also serve for gaming and music, but need a separate microphone for voice chat.

Which model fits your use?

TYGR 300 R: gaming in a quiet room

The TYGR 300 R is the gaming-first headphone here. Beyerdynamic describes it as designed for sound localization in games, and its 32-ohm specification is relatively low among these wired options. It is open-back, however: the manufacturer says outside noise is virtually unattenuated, so nearby conversation and room sounds remain audible. It has no integrated microphone.

DT 900 PRO X: open-back listening for games and music

Choose the DT 900 PRO X if you want an open-back studio headphone for music and gaming and are comfortable adding a separate microphone for chat. Its manufacturer-listed 48-ohm impedance and detachable mini-XLR cable are useful setup details. The stated frequency response is a specification, not proof of how it will sound to you or a comparative performance ranking.

DT 770 PRO X: closed-back headphone without a built-in mic

The DT 770 PRO X is the closed-back studio option in the headphone group. A closed design is worth considering when you want more separation from room noise or want to limit sound escaping into a shared space; it is not an integrated gaming headset, so plan on a separate microphone. Its detachable, lockable cable also distinguishes it from the original DT 770 PRO described in the manufacturer’s comparison.

beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro (250 Ohm), Open-Back Studio Headphones, Black
  • 250-ohm studio impedance: designed for audio interfaces and headphone amps - it needs one for full volume; not ideal straight from a phone.
  • The mixing reference: the open-back sound studios have trusted for decades, for honest mixes that translate everywhere.
  • Open-back design: wide, natural stereo image so you hear placement and depth while mixing and mastering.
  • Velour ear pads: soft, replaceable grey velour and a spring-steel headband stay comfortable through long sessions.
  • In the box: DT 990 Pro with fixed 3m coiled cable and 1/4-inch adapter. Made in Germany. Pair it with a headphone amp or interface.

MMX 300 PRO: closed gaming headset with a microphone

If you want one product with an integrated mic and a closed design, the MMX 300 PRO is the clearest match in this set. Its package includes separate PC plugs and an adapter for combination-jack devices, which helps with common connection setups. Beyerdynamic’s June 2024 product sheet calls it “the ideal headset for all gaming and multimedia applications”; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent comparative finding.

DT 990 PRO: open-back studio alternative

The DT 990 PRO is a recognizable open-back studio headphone that Beyerdynamic also places in its gaming category. It may suit listeners who want an open headphone for games and music, but it lacks an integrated mic and comes in different impedance variants. Verify the exact version and your device’s output capability rather than assuming one impedance applies to every DT 990 PRO.

beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro Wired Closed-Back Gaming Headset, Condenser Mic
  • Works wired with PC, PlayStation, Switch, and any device with a 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • Stay locked in: closed-back isolation blocks room noise so you hear nothing but the game.
  • STELLAR.45 driver: esports-grade 45mm transducer tuned for detail at low and high volumes.
  • Condenser microphone: broadcast-quality capsule so your team hears you clean, not clipped.
  • In the box: MMX 300 Pro and detachable cable. Handmade in Germany - plug into any 3.5mm jack, no software needed.

Open-back or closed-back: decide by your room

Open-back headphones let sound pass between the earcups and the room. That can make them a poor fit in a noisy space, on public transport, or when sound leakage would disturb someone nearby. In particular, the TYGR 300 R’s documentation says external noise is virtually unattenuated. The TYGR 300 R, DT 900 PRO X, and DT 990 PRO are open-back options in this shortlist.

Closed-back headphones are the more sensible place to start if you need greater isolation from surroundings or want less sound escaping. The DT 770 PRO X and MMX 300 PRO are closed-back. Closed construction does not guarantee silence or complete sound containment; choose based on the actual room and people nearby.

Rank #3
beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro X (48 Ohm), Open-Back Studio Headphones, Black
  • 48-ohm drive: full volume from any source - laptop, interface, phone, or console - no headphone amp needed.
  • Mix with confidence: open-back reference sound reveals the placement, depth, and detail your mix depends on.
  • STELLAR.45 driver: flagship transducer for precise, high-resolution monitoring at any listening level.
  • Open-back soundstage: wide, natural imaging for mixing, editing, and critical listening.
  • In the box: DT 990 Pro X, detachable 3m mini-XLR cable, and 1/4-inch adapter. Made in Germany - plug straight into any source.

Check the microphone and connection before buying

  • Need a built-in mic? The MMX 300 PRO includes one. The other four models are headphones, so add a separate microphone if you use voice chat.
  • Using a combo headset jack? The MMX 300 PRO includes an adapter for combination-jack devices as well as separate PC plugs.
  • Want to replace or change the cable? The DT 900 PRO X has a detachable mini-XLR cable. The DT 770 PRO X has a detachable, lockable 3 m mini-XLR cable. TYGR 300 R uses a 3.5 mm plug and is supplied with a 6.35 mm adapter.
  • Using a controller or laptop headphone output? Check that device’s output and the headphone’s impedance before relying on a particular volume level.

What impedance tells you—and what it does not

The manufacturer lists the DT 900 PRO X and DT 770 PRO X at 48 ohms and the TYGR 300 R at 32 ohms. These figures help describe electrical load, but impedance alone does not guarantee that a headphone will play loudly enough from a particular controller, laptop, or interface. Beyerdynamic notes that TYGR 300 R volume from a controller jack can vary by platform because maximum output depends on the built-in sound card.

For the DT 990 PRO, identify the exact impedance variant first. If your setup has limited output, check the device or interface specifications and confirm expected compatibility rather than treating a model’s name or a single impedance figure as a volume guarantee.

How to choose among the five

  1. Start with your room. Favor a closed design if outside noise or sound leakage matters; choose open-back only if the room is suitable.
  2. Decide whether voice chat needs to be built in. If yes, the MMX 300 PRO is the only headset with an integrated microphone in this shortlist. Otherwise, budget for a separate mic.
  3. Match the connection to your device. Check for a 3.5 mm output, a combo headset jack, or the appropriate PC connections, and note which cables or adapters are included.
  4. Confirm output compatibility. Compare the chosen model’s impedance and connection with your controller, computer, or audio interface; if volume is low, the device’s output capability may be the constraint.
  5. Choose the intended role. TYGR 300 R is specifically designed for gaming; DT 900 PRO X, DT 770 PRO X, and DT 990 PRO are studio headphones that can also be used for gaming; MMX 300 PRO is a closed gaming headset with a mic.
