Start with the settings that control the two displays: shorten screen timeout, lower brightness or enable adaptive brightness, and consider Dark theme. Leave adaptive battery management enabled, then use the battery-usage screen to find apps that are draining power in the background. Turn on Battery Saver or your manufacturer’s Power saving mode only when you need extra runtime, and enable charging optimization or battery protection if your phone offers it.
There is no single foldable-phone battery menu. Pixel Fold, Galaxy Z Fold, and other Android foldables use different labels and paths, and options vary by model, region, carrier, Android release, and manufacturer software. If a path below does not match, open Settings and search for Battery, Battery protection, or Power saving.
Change these settings first
Foldables expose battery drain in a way that ordinary phones do not: you may use a large inner display for reading or multitasking, then repeatedly wake a cover display for quick checks. The following adjustments reduce avoidable screen-on time without disabling essential phone functions.

Google’s Android and Pixel guidance recommends these screen-focused measures, but it does not publish a foldable-specific percentage of battery saved by any one change. Treat them as practical ways to remove waste, not as guaranteed runtime figures.

Set a timeout that matches how you use both screens
Open Settings and search for Screen timeout or Screen timeout and brightness. Select the shortest period that does not interrupt your normal reading. A 30-second timeout is a reasonable starting point; increase it if the screen repeatedly turns off while you are actively looking at it.
Check the behavior on the cover display and the inner display. Some software applies one timeout to both, while other versions expose additional lock-screen or always-on controls. A timeout only helps after the phone has stopped detecting interaction, so it does not replace manually locking the phone when you are finished.
Use adaptive brightness, then correct it when necessary
Search Settings for Adaptive brightness (sometimes under Display). Adaptive brightness adjusts output according to ambient light. If it regularly chooses a level that is brighter than you need, lower the slider in the environments where you use the phone most. A lower setting is particularly useful during long sessions on the inner display.

Dark theme is normally under Display or in Quick Settings. It is most useful when the apps you use support dark interfaces and when the phone has an OLED panel. On supported Pixel phones, Smooth Display and Always-on Display are additional choices to review. Disable or limit them only if you value extra runtime more than fluid motion or glanceable information.
Keep adaptive battery management on
Adaptive management is the safest default because it learns which apps you use and optimizes less-important activity without requiring you to guess which services are essential. Google warns that Adaptive Battery can reduce performance or delay some notifications, and a newly set-up Pixel may take a few weeks to learn usage patterns.

Pixel and other near-stock Android phones
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Open Battery Saver, then Adaptive Battery on Pixel software that uses this path.
- Leave Adaptive Battery enabled unless you are troubleshooting a specific compatibility problem.
On other Android builds, look under Battery, Battery optimization, or Adaptive preferences. Menu names can change after an Android update.
Inspect battery use before restricting apps
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage (the wording varies) and examine the apps with the highest total and background use. A foldable can make an apparently heavy app look worse because the inner display encourages longer sessions; distinguish screen use from background activity before changing permissions.
Keep app battery use set to Optimized in the general case. Restrict an app only when its background use is clearly abnormal and you can accept delayed syncing or alerts. Messaging, security, health, navigation, authentication, and other time-sensitive apps often need background access. If you restrict them, notifications may arrive late or only after you open the app.
Samsung Galaxy controls
Recent Galaxy software exposes Background usage limits with lists for Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps. Search Settings for those terms if the exact menu is different on your device. Sleeping apps receive less background activity; deep-sleeping apps generally run only when opened. Add only apps that do not need prompt updates, such as an infrequently used game or shopping app.
Do not place a messaging, two-factor authentication, medical-monitoring, alarm, or work-critical app in a deep-sleep list without testing the consequences. Removing an app from the list is the recovery step if alerts stop arriving.

Use Battery Saver or Power saving as a situational tool
Battery Saver is for a day when remaining charge matters more than full responsiveness. Android can limit or turn off background activity and may reduce visual effects, network activity, feature availability, and app timing. Samsung’s Power saving mode provides similar controls and, on some One UI versions, lets you choose which restrictions activate.

- Open Quick Settings and tap Battery Saver or Power saving, or find it under Settings > Battery.
- Read the list of changes shown by your software.
- Enable the mode when you can tolerate delayed background work or reduced performance.
- Turn it off again when you need normal syncing, high performance, or uninterrupted notifications.
If your phone permits an automatic threshold, choose a percentage that reflects your commute or travel pattern rather than enabling the most restrictive mode all day. Keep the exceptions or options that preserve functions you cannot miss.
Understand what may be delayed
- New email, cloud synchronization, and other background fetches may wait.
- Some network connections and app refreshes may be deferred.
- Animations or high-performance behavior may be reduced.
- Notifications can arrive later, particularly from apps you have also restricted individually.
Battery Saver does not repair a failing battery or identify the cause of abnormal drain. Use the battery-usage screen first when one app or service is responsible.
Choose a charging-health setting for your routine
Charging optimization is about long-term battery care rather than adding immediate capacity. If the phone spends many hours connected to a charger, look for Charging optimization, Adaptive Charging, Charge limit, or Battery protection.
Pixel charging options
Google describes Adaptive Charging as a feature that learns your charging habits and aims to finish charging shortly before your usual unplug time. Supported Pixel phones may also offer an 80% charge limit that prioritizes long-term battery health. An 80% limit means the phone may not reach 100% even though charging is working normally.

Use the limit when you typically finish the day with charge remaining or leave the phone plugged in for long periods. Choose Adaptive Charging or a full charge when you need maximum capacity for travel, navigation, photography, or a long day away from an outlet.
Galaxy battery protection options
Galaxy models, including the Galaxy Z Fold6 described in the European English manual revised August 14, 2024, provide Battery protection choices that can stop charging at full or limit the maximum charge to a preset level, depending on software mode. Open Settings, search for Battery protection, and read the description for the mode offered on your phone. Confirm the setting after major One UI updates because labels and choices can change.
Neither a charge limit nor Adaptive Charging is a fault. The phone is following the selected health policy. Change the setting temporarily if a particular day requires a full charge.

Keep the phone cool
Google Android Help’s short instruction is “Keep it cool.” Heat can accelerate battery drain and damage the battery. Avoid leaving a folded or unfolded phone in direct sun, a hot car, or under bedding while it charges. If the device feels unusually hot, stop demanding tasks, remove an insulating case if safe, disconnect the charger, and let it cool before continuing. Do not cool it with ice or expose it to condensation.
Expect temporary drain after setup or an update
After a system update or initial setup, the phone may use more power while it completes optimization, indexing, and app updates. Check usage again after that work settles before making aggressive restrictions. A single unusually high day is not enough evidence that every background service should be disabled.

You do not need routine zero-to-full calibration
Google’s general Android guidance says you do not need to repeatedly run the battery from empty to full to “teach” the phone its capacity. Charge according to your routine and use the health features available on the device. Repeatedly reaching zero creates inconvenience and is not a required maintenance procedure.
A decision framework for the right setting

Troubleshoot battery drain without breaking notifications
- Check the battery graph and app list. Identify whether the drain is screen time, mobile network use, or a particular app’s background activity.
- Check for heat. A hot device can drain quickly even when no single app appears dominant.
- Review recent changes. Consider an update, newly installed app, new widget, poor-signal location, or unusually long inner-screen session.
- Return one restricted app to Optimized. If notifications or syncing stopped after a restriction, undo that restriction and test again.
- Use Battery Saver temporarily. If endurance improves sharply, recheck background apps and display settings instead of leaving every app restricted.
- Restart and observe another normal day. Persistent abnormal drain after these checks may indicate an app or hardware issue that settings alone cannot resolve.
Keep a change log when troubleshooting: alter one setting, use the phone normally, and then inspect the next battery cycle. Because official guidance does not provide a universal foldable-specific runtime gain for each setting, this is more reliable than assuming a fixed percentage improvement.
What to change on a typical foldable
For most owners, the balanced setup is a 30-second-or-longer timeout that does not interrupt reading, Adaptive brightness with manual corrections, Dark theme if preferred, and Adaptive Battery left on. Keep essential communication and security apps optimized or unrestricted, place only nonessential apps into sleeping lists, and reserve Battery Saver for low-charge situations. If the phone is routinely connected overnight or at a desk, enable Adaptive Charging, an 80% limit, or Battery protection according to your daily capacity needs.
