For a first or routine print on the Bambu Lab A2L, change very little. Complete the printer’s guided initialization calibration, then make sure Bambu Studio matches the hardware and material actually installed: printer model, nozzle diameter, build plate and filament profile. Keep the supplied process profile, allow heatbed preconditioning and automatic bed leveling to finish, and start with a simple model. Most failed first prints come from a mismatch between the slicer selections and the machine, not from an untouched default setting.
The short answer: verify settings before you edit them
The A2L is designed to work from Bambu Studio’s prepared printer-and-filament profiles. Those profiles are intended as ready-to-use combinations, so treating every advanced value as something to optimize before the first print usually adds risk. Your pre-print changes should be checks and selections that describe your real setup.
- Run the A2L startup and initialization calibration.
- Select the A2L as the active printer in Bambu Studio.
- Choose the nozzle diameter that is physically installed.
- Select the build-plate profile that matches the plate on the bed.
- Select the filament profile that matches the material loaded through AMS Lite or the external spool.
- Leave speed, flow, temperatures and other process values at the supplied profile for the first attempt.
- Let the heatbed reach its target and complete automatic bed leveling before printing.
Calibration improves the printer’s setup, but it is not a guarantee that every model or material will print successfully. It gives you a known baseline from which to diagnose a real problem.

1. Complete initialization calibration
Use the A2L’s guided startup flow before sending a model. The official first-print procedure puts preparation and initialization calibration ahead of model selection and printing. Do not interrupt the calibration sequence simply because the machine appears ready; it is establishing the measurements and routines used for subsequent jobs.

What to do
- Power on the A2L and follow the on-screen startup instructions.
- Run the complete initialization calibration when prompted.
- Inspect the heatbed as the guide requests, ensuring the plate is seated correctly and free of obvious debris.
- Only after calibration finishes, open or slice the model in Bambu Studio.
Calibration is a setup step, not a reason to change extrusion or motion values manually. If a later print shows a specific defect, troubleshoot that defect while keeping the calibrated baseline intact.
2. Match Bambu Studio to the physical printer
Before slicing, compare the selections in Bambu Studio with what is mounted on the machine. A mismatch can produce an apparently random failure even when the printer itself is functioning normally.
| Item | What must match | A2L choices documented by the manufacturer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printer | The active printer profile must be the A2L. | Bambu Lab A2L | The profile controls machine dimensions, motion limits and compatible process defaults. |
| Nozzle | The selected diameter must equal the nozzle installed in the toolhead. | 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 or 0.8 mm | Line width, layer-height limits and extrusion calculations depend on diameter. |
| Build plate | The selected plate type must equal the plate physically attached. | Textured PEI, Engineering or Cool Plate SuperTack | Surface and adhesion assumptions vary by plate. |
| Filament | The selected material profile must equal the filament loaded from AMS Lite or the external spool. | PLA, PETG, TPU or PVA are listed suitable materials | Temperature, cooling and extrusion behavior are material-specific. |
Check the nozzle diameter
The A2L supports 0.2 mm, 0.4 mm, 0.6 mm and 0.8 mm nozzles. Select the diameter that is installed now, not the diameter you intend to install later. If you have changed nozzles, verify the hardware before opening an old project whose printer profile may still contain the previous size.
A larger nozzle is not an automatic speed upgrade, and a smaller nozzle is not a universal quality upgrade. For the first print, use the supplied profile for the selected diameter rather than changing line width, layer height or flow manually.

Check the build plate
Confirm that the physical surface is one of the A2L plates supported in the specifications: textured PEI, Engineering or Cool Plate SuperTack. In Bambu Studio, select the corresponding plate profile before slicing. The plate choice should describe the surface touching the model; selecting a different surface can apply unsuitable first-layer and adhesion assumptions.
Seat the plate flat and clean it according to the plate manufacturer’s care instructions. A correct slicer selection cannot compensate for a plate that is contaminated, damaged or not fully seated.
Check the loaded material
Match the slicer’s filament entry to the actual spool. This applies whether the filament is routed through AMS Lite or loaded from an external spool. Confirm both the polymer and, where relevant, the reinforced version. PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA are listed as suitable A2L materials.
PLA-CF and PETG-CF require a hardened steel nozzle. Do not start a carbon-fiber-reinforced job with a standard nozzle merely because the diameter selection is correct; the material requirement is separate from the diameter setting.

3. Keep the supplied process profile as your baseline
For a first attempt, resist changing speed, flow, temperature, cooling, acceleration or other advanced process values. Bambu Lab describes its Bambu Studio profiles as ready-to-use combinations for its printers and filament combinations. Using that profile gives you a stable reference when diagnosing a defect.
Settings you normally should not change before the first print
- Print speed and acceleration
- Extrusion flow or flow-ratio overrides
- Nozzle and bed temperatures
- Cooling or fan overrides
- Retraction values
- Layer-height and line-width overrides
- Special support, bridge or wall settings without a model-specific reason
There is no universal “best” temperature or speed that must be entered before printing. Material brand, color, moisture, geometry and the selected plate all affect the result. Start with the profile that corresponds to the selected filament, then change one variable only when a visible symptom gives you a reason.
4. Let thermal preconditioning and leveling finish
The A2L has a model-specific heatbed routine: it holds the bed at its target temperature before automatic bed leveling. Bambu Studio release notes describe this as a way to help provide a consistent first layer. Areas near the edge of the bed can take longer to stabilize than the center, so a pause during this phase is expected.

Firmware and software qualification
The documented release-note behavior requires A2L firmware 01.01.01.00 or later. This is a minimum for the described feature, not a permanent statement about every future release. Check the firmware installed on the printer and follow any version prompts shown by Bambu Studio; the exact behavior is version-dependent.

What the printer should do before extrusion
- Heat the bed toward the target specified by the selected profile.
- Hold the bed long enough for the surface, including slower edge areas, to stabilize.
- Perform automatic bed leveling.
- Begin the first layer only after those routines complete.
Do not bypass the wait by starting from a cold bed or by manually forcing a different temperature. The purpose of this sequence is to measure and print on a thermally settled surface.
5. Choose a simple first print
Use one material and one color while validating the setup. Select a straightforward model with a broad, uncomplicated first layer rather than a tall, thin or highly detailed object. The official guide’s sequence is to select a model, confirm the settings and start the print; following that order makes it easier to identify whether a problem comes from setup or geometry.
A practical first-print checklist
- The A2L is selected as the printer.
- The installed nozzle diameter is selected.
- The physical plate and its profile agree.
- The filament profile agrees with the loaded spool.
- The filament path is seated and the spool can unwind freely.
- The plate is flat, clean and fully engaged.
- The model fits inside the printable area shown by the slicer.
- Initialization calibration has completed.
- Firmware and Bambu Studio show no unresolved compatibility prompt.
Slice the model, review the preview for missing regions or unexpected supports, and start the job. Avoid changing several settings between slicing and printing; otherwise you lose the baseline needed for troubleshooting.
When a setting change is justified
Change a process value only after you can describe the symptom and have ruled out a setup mismatch. Make one change at a time, record it, and preserve the original profile so you can return to it.

The first layer is uneven or does not adhere
- Confirm the selected plate matches the installed surface.
- Check that the plate is clean and seated flat.
- Verify that heatbed preconditioning and automatic leveling completed.
- Confirm the selected filament profile matches the loaded material.
Do not begin by inventing a new bed temperature. The A2L’s heatbed is specified up to 80 °C, but that maximum is a hardware limit, not a universal setting for every filament or plate.
The material is not feeding or extrusion is inconsistent
- Compare the slicer material entry with the spool label.
- Check that the filament is loaded through the intended AMS Lite or external-spool path.
- Verify the nozzle diameter selection against the installed nozzle.
- For PLA-CF or PETG-CF, confirm that the nozzle is hardened steel.
Only after those checks should you investigate a profile-specific flow or temperature adjustment. A flow override cannot correct a wrong material selection or a partially loaded filament path.
The print shows stringing, rough surfaces or warping
First return to the baseline checks: correct material profile, clean and appropriate plate, complete thermal routine and unobstructed filament feed. If the symptom remains, adjust the single process value most directly related to the defect using the profile’s documented range, then test a small model. Keep the untouched profile available for comparison.
Settings that depend on the job, not on first-time setup
Some choices are legitimate but should be made for a stated objective:
| Goal | Likely choice | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Finer small details | A smaller supported nozzle, such as 0.2 mm | Install that nozzle and select its diameter before slicing. |
| Higher throughput on broad features | A larger supported nozzle, such as 0.6 or 0.8 mm | Install the matching nozzle and use the corresponding profile. |
| High-strength reinforced parts | PLA-CF or PETG-CF | Use a hardened steel nozzle and the exact reinforced-material profile. |
| Different surface or adhesion behavior | Textured PEI, Engineering or Cool Plate SuperTack | Mount the intended plate and select its profile. |
These are configuration decisions, not mandatory pre-print tweaks. If you have no specific reason to change the nozzle, plate or material, retain the setup used by the supplied profile.
A repeatable pre-print routine
- Prepare the machine: finish startup calibration, inspect the bed and install the intended nozzle and plate.
- Prepare the software: select the A2L, matching nozzle, matching plate and matching filament profile.
- Review the baseline: leave advanced process values at their supplied defaults.
- Check versions: confirm the printer and Bambu Studio do not show a required update; firmware 01.01.01.00 or later is the documented minimum for the A2L heatbed-preconditioning feature described in the release notes.
- Slice a simple model: use one material and color while validating the setup.
- Start and wait: allow heatbed preconditioning and automatic leveling to complete before judging the first layer.
- Diagnose deliberately: if a defect appears, fix the physical or profile mismatch first, then change one process value tied to the observed symptom.
This routine answers the practical question behind “which settings should I change?”: select the settings that describe your actual hardware and filament, and leave performance tuning until a specific print gives you evidence that tuning is needed.
