There is no reliable universal blacklist of app types that should not be on every phone. Instead, review apps one by one: remove ones you do not use or recognize, investigate apps you no longer trust, and narrow permissions for apps you still need. Before deleting anything, check whether it stores information in the cloud or helps you access an important account or service.
Which apps are worth reviewing?
Start with apps you have not used recently, do not recognize, or no longer trust. An app’s category alone—such as messaging, shopping, social networking, or utilities—is not enough to establish that it is unsafe. Consider what the app does for you, what access it requests, and what its privacy disclosures say.
- Purpose: Do you still need the app, or can you use a website or another service instead?
- Recognition and trust: Do you know why it is installed and who provides it?
- Permissions: Does it need access to information such as your location or photos to perform the function you use?
- Privacy disclosures: Check the app’s privacy information in its store listing. Apple’s App Store privacy labels describe information provided by developers, including whether data is used to track users; Google Play’s Data safety section is another source to review. These disclosures are useful inputs, not proof that an app is safe or a guarantee that every relevant practice is covered. Choose the action that matches your goal

Review permissions and tracking before uninstalling
On iPhone
Open Settings > Privacy & Security to review permissions for information such as location and photos. If you want to limit cross-company tracking, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and review the choices for individual apps. Apple says declining a tracking request does not prevent you from using the app’s full capabilities. That choice concerns cross-company tracking as Apple defines it; it does not turn off every kind of data collection within an app. See Apple’s tracking-permission guidance.
On Android
Use Android’s permission controls to review what an app can access. For location, Android describes options for approximate or precise access, and it can reset permissions for apps that have not been used for a while. Those controls limit access; they do not by themselves remove the app or close its account. Android privacy settings and permissions.

Check what deletion will affect
Before uninstalling, consider whether the app stores information only on the phone, in a cloud account, or in both places. Removing an app does not necessarily delete its account or cloud-stored content. Check the service’s account and data settings if you also want to close the account or remove information stored online.
Think through dependencies before deleting an app used for accessibility, health, safety, authentication, work, travel, or access to stored information. Make sure you understand how you will recover an account or complete the task without it.

Apple’s Personal Safety User Guide cautions: “Before making changes or deleting information, consider potential impacts to your safety and privacy.” It also explains that App Privacy Report starts gathering information only after you turn it on and reports recent access to privacy-sensitive data and device sensors over the past seven days; it is not a record of activity from before activation. A straightforward phone app review
- Set your goal. Decide whether you want fewer icons, fewer distractions, less app access to personal data, or a full uninstall.
- Review apps you do not use or recognize. Check what each does and whether you still rely on it.
- Check permissions and store disclosures. Restrict access that is not needed for the app’s function, and treat privacy labels or Data safety details as information to weigh rather than a guarantee.
- Check account and data dependencies. Look for cloud-stored files, account recovery needs, and essential tasks tied to the app.
- Take the least disruptive action that meets your goal. Hide or remove an icon, limit permissions, use distraction controls, or delete the app as appropriate.
