To find which apps are using your phone’s battery, start with the built-in Battery settings—not a third-party monitor. Check each app’s activity and background use alongside signal strength, notifications, and recent updates. A high percentage is a reason to investigate, not proof that an app is faulty.
What battery-use figures can—and cannot—tell you
Battery screens show where charge went during a selected period. They do not, by themselves, establish that an app is defective: a navigation app, game, camera, or streaming service may rank high because you used its screen, network, GPS, or camera heavily.
Compare a typical day with your recent use, then inspect the activity details. Background work, weak cellular coverage, and frequent notifications can also contribute. The labels and available details vary by operating system version and phone model.

Check app battery use on iPhone
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review Daily Usage and the leading apps or system activities. Apple’s guide describes comparisons with prior days; its troubleshooting guidance says the chart compares the day with the prior seven days.
- Tap View All Battery Usage, choose a day, and inspect App and System Activity. Where shown, compare each item’s percentage with its on-screen and background time.
Apple identifies directions, music playback, photo syncing, and mail fetching as examples of background activity. If an app shows substantial background use, consider whether it needs location access or frequent syncing while you are not using it. Make one reversible change at a time and check the Battery screen again.

Apple also notes that low cellular coverage and notifications can use battery. If the screen identifies poor coverage, try using the phone where reception is better; Apple says Wi-Fi can use less battery than mobile networks for internet apps. Brightness and auto-lock settings can matter too. Available controls vary by iOS version and device. Apple’s iPhone battery-use guide and battery troubleshooting guidance describe these indicators and settings.

Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- High screen-on use: A high-use app may simply reflect time spent navigating, watching video, gaming, taking photos, or streaming. Consider the activity and time alongside the percentage.
- High background use: Review whether the app needs location access, syncing, or frequent refresh when it is not open. If you change a setting, change one at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
- Weak signal: If the iPhone details indicate no mobile coverage or low signal, reception may be part of the drain. Try a stronger-signal area or Wi-Fi for internet use where practical.
- Drain after an update or setup: Phones may do background work after software updates or device setup. Apple advises waiting a few days after an update, then checking battery use again before concluding the change is permanent.
- Hot phone: Google’s Android Help battery-care guidance states, “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.”
Try low-risk fixes before disruptive ones
Make targeted changes
For an app with unexpectedly high background use, review its background-use or refresh settings and restrict them only if the app does not need to update when you are not using it. On Pixel, keep Optimized as the default and change an individual app only when its activity warrants it. Battery Saver on Android or Low Power Mode on iPhone can help extend charge when needed; the available options depend on the device and software version.

Update or restart
If the drain appears tied to a particular app or began unexpectedly, check for available operating-system and app updates and restart the phone. On Pixel, Google lists updating and restarting among troubleshooting options.
Use force-stop or uninstall selectively
On Pixel, Google’s guidance includes restricting background use, force-stopping, or uninstalling an app that remains problematic. Force-stop is not available for every app, and stopping essential apps or services can prevent the phone from working correctly. Avoid treating it as a routine fix.

Reserve factory reset for a last resort
A factory reset removes apps and data. Google advises backing up first; consult current manufacturer support before taking this step. It is much more disruptive than adjusting one app’s background behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck battery condition separately from app activity
If the phone has poor endurance even when app use is ordinary, inspect battery health as a separate question from which app used charge. On iPhone 15 and later, the path is Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, it is Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Apple says newer models can show capacity and additional details such as cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date.
If iPhone indicates service, Apple advises considering battery replacement and says battery service and recycling should be handled by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. A capacity reading alone does not show that an app is responsible. If battery health does not explain persistent poor endurance, seek support from the phone’s manufacturer. See Apple’s battery-health guidance and Apple’s battery troubleshooting guidance.
