GrapheneOS does not have a universal list of broken apps. Compatibility depends on how each app uses Google Play services, which profile contains its dependencies, and whether the developer rejects alternate operating systems with integrity or anti-tampering checks. Google Play is optional: GrapheneOS lets you install the official Play services, Play Store and related components as ordinary sandboxed apps in a selected user or work profile.
Many apps work normally with that setup, and portable apps that do not require Play services often work without Google components at all. Others have limited features, such as missing background notifications, while some banking, authentication and vehicle apps can refuse to run. The practical approach is to identify which category your failure belongs to, then separate a fixable configuration problem from a policy enforced by the app developer.
What “not working” means on GrapheneOS
Reports that an app “doesn’t work” cover several different outcomes:

- It displays a message that Google Play services are missing.
- The main interface works, but a feature such as location, payments, cloud backup or sign-in is unavailable.
- Notifications arrive only while the app is open.
- A banking or authentication app reports that the phone is rooted, uncertified or unsafe.
- A car integration such as Android Auto will not install, connect or forward notifications.
- A problem starts after an operating-system or app update.
These symptoms have different causes. Installing Play does not override an app’s own operating-system policy, and an integrity rejection is not evidence that every app is incompatible.

How Google Play works on GrapheneOS
Play is optional and sandboxed
GrapheneOS ships without Google apps and services. You can install Google Play services, the Google Play Store and the Google Services Framework from the GrapheneOS App Store, choosing the user or work profile where they should run. They are regular sandboxed applications rather than privileged components built into the operating system.
An app can use those components only when they are installed and available in the same profile. Installing Play in the owner profile does not make it available to an app installed in a separate work profile, secondary user or private space. Each profile has its own app data, permissions and Play installation.
Why many apps still work
Android applications can use standard Android APIs, their own servers or alternative libraries instead of depending on Google Play services. Those apps generally work with Play disabled or absent. Other apps use Play for only selected functions. For example, the main screen may operate while cloud messaging, location, in-app billing or account sign-in does not.
There is no reliable percentage or app count for “working” apps. Compatibility changes with app versions, device models, GrapheneOS releases and profile configuration, so a community report about one version is not a permanent guarantee.

Fix apps that say Google Play services are missing
1. Confirm the profile
- Identify the profile where the affected app is installed: owner, work or another user.
- Open that same profile and verify that Google Play services and the Play Store are installed there.
- If Play exists only in a different profile, install it in the profile containing the app, or move the app to the profile that already has the required components.
Profile isolation is intentional. A service in one profile cannot satisfy a dependency from another profile.
2. Install the components through the GrapheneOS App Store
Use the GrapheneOS App Store to install the official Google Play components. Keep them enabled and updated. If the app needs an online account, confirm that both the app and Play services are allowed to use the network.
3. Recheck the app after Play is configured
Open the app again and test the feature that failed. If it was installed before Play was configured and still does not detect the service, community troubleshooting sometimes suggests reinstalling the affected app after setup. Reinstalling clears that app’s local state, so back up any data or recovery codes first. Do not treat a reinstall as a workaround for an integrity policy.
When background notifications do not arrive
Portable apps versus Play-dependent apps
GrapheneOS documentation distinguishes portable apps that implement standard Android notification mechanisms from apps that implemented background delivery only through Google Play services. Portable apps generally provide working notifications without Play. A Play-dependent app may show notifications when open but not wake in the background if its messaging service is unavailable.

Check the dependency and profile
- Verify that Google Play services is installed, enabled and online in the same profile as the app.
- Open the app’s Android notification settings and ensure the required notification channels are enabled.
- Check that the app is permitted to run in the background under its battery settings.
- For Play-dependent delivery, review the official GrapheneOS guidance on exempting Google Play services from battery optimization where that is required for reliable background operation.
Do not describe this symptom as a general GrapheneOS notification defect. It usually indicates an app dependency or an app-specific background policy.
Banking, authentication and “rooted device” warnings
Why this category is unpredictable
Banking apps are a particularly problematic compatibility class for alternate operating systems. Some work with any GrapheneOS configuration. Many require sandboxed Google Play. Others perform anti-tampering, certification or integrity checks and reject the device even when the app itself is installed correctly.
GrapheneOS is not Google-certified. An app that treats certification or a particular integrity result as a hard requirement can therefore refuse to start, block sign-in or disable transactions. The decision is made by the app and its backend, not by a missing toggle in GrapheneOS.
Distinguish setup errors from a policy rejection
- Likely setup issue: the app explicitly says Play services are missing, cannot reach its server, or works after Play is installed in the correct profile.
- Likely developer policy: the app reports a rooted, uncertified or compromised device despite a complete same-profile Play setup, or displays a Play Integrity warning.
- Uncertain: behavior changes between app versions, devices or updates without a clear error.
GrapheneOS does not try to bypass fragile checks that may break as developers improve their detection. Do not follow advice that asks you to defeat security controls, spoof device state or install modified banking packages. Use the bank’s supported app and contact its support team if you need confirmation of supported operating systems.

Information to collect before requesting help
For a useful support request, record the exact app name and version, device model, GrapheneOS release or build, profile placement, whether Play Store and Play services are installed and have network access, the complete error text, any Play Integrity notice, and the steps already attempted. A report tied to one app version and device setup should not be generalized to every banking app.
Android Auto: installation, connection and notification fixes
Install it from the required source
The GrapheneOS usage guidance specifies that Android Auto should be installed from the GrapheneOS App Store; it cannot be installed through the Play Store or other app sources. Install it in the profile that will use the vehicle and make sure sandboxed Google Play is available in that profile.
Configure the dedicated settings screen
- Install Android Auto from the GrapheneOS App Store.
- Open Settings > Apps > Sandboxed Google Play.
- Use the Android Auto configuration screen to grant the connection permissions required for your vehicle and connection mode.
- For wired use, grant the baseline USB or connection permissions requested by the setup. Wired operation generally needs less access, although some vehicles still require wireless permissions.
- For wireless use, grant the wireless permissions requested by the setup and complete pairing on both the phone and vehicle.
- If you want messages or other app alerts forwarded to the car, grant Android Auto notification access in Android’s notification-access settings.
Why an app is absent from the car screen
Only apps installed from the Play Store and designed to support Android Auto can appear in the car interface. An app can work on the phone and still be absent from Android Auto because it has not implemented the vehicle integration.

- Write down the date and what changed: GrapheneOS release, app version, Play component update or profile change.
- Check the current GrapheneOS release notes for compatibility fixes and other changes.
- Check the affected app’s current version and its own support information.
- Repeat the test with the same profile, network and permissions; changing several variables at once makes the cause harder to identify.
- If the issue affects only one app after its update, report it to that developer with the exact version and error. If several unrelated apps changed behavior immediately after an OS update, provide GrapheneOS support with reproducible steps and build details.
An update-related failure does not, by itself, prove an operating-system regression. It may result from an app-side policy change, a server change or a configuration difference.

A complete diagnostic workflow
Step 1: Describe the exact failure
Replace “it does not work” with a reproducible description: whether installation fails, the app closes, sign-in fails, a particular feature is missing, notifications are delayed or the car connection drops. Copy the exact error text.
Step 2: Record versions and device details
- App name, package or edition if known, and version.
- Phone model and GrapheneOS release or build.
- Google Play services and Play Store versions.
- Date the problem started and any update immediately before it.
Step 3: Verify profile and network placement
- Confirm the app, Play services and Play Store are in the same user or work profile.
- Confirm the app and Play services have network access.
- For Android Auto, confirm installation came from the GrapheneOS App Store.
Step 4: Check permissions and background operation
- Review app permissions relevant to the failed feature, such as location, nearby devices, notifications or USB access.
- Check notification channels and notification access.
- Review battery optimization and background restrictions, especially for Play services when background messaging is required.
Step 5: Look for integrity signals
Note any wording about root, certification, device integrity or Play Integrity. A clear integrity rejection points toward an app-side policy rather than a missing permission. Do not attempt to circumvent it.
Step 6: Test one change at a time
After recording the original state, make one controlled change—such as installing Play in the correct profile or granting a required permission—then retest. This preserves a useful diagnosis and prevents a sequence of unrelated resets from hiding the cause.

How to evaluate community compatibility reports
Community lists and forum posts can help when you have a named app, but treat them as reports for a particular date, app version, device and configuration. Check whether the writer used sandboxed Play, which profile contained the apps, and whether the report concerns a feature rather than the whole app. Recheck the behavior after updates instead of treating an old “works” or “fails” label as permanent.
Official GrapheneOS guidance is strongest for installing sandboxed Play, configuring Android Auto and explaining why some app classes fail. It does not provide an exhaustive, guaranteed app-by-app compatibility catalog.
Before switching: a practical readiness check
- List the apps you cannot replace, including banking, work authentication, transit, health and vehicle apps.
- For each one, identify whether it requires Google Play services, background notifications or device-integrity approval.
- Plan a test profile with sandboxed Play and verify sign-in, notifications and the features you actually use.
- Keep recovery codes and alternate authentication methods available before changing phones or profiles.
- For Android Auto, test the exact vehicle, wired or wireless mode and notification requirements.
- Record app and OS versions so a later failure can be compared with the known-good setup.
This process cannot guarantee compatibility with an app whose developer blocks alternate operating systems, but it catches the configuration mistakes that are within your control and gives support teams the information needed to investigate the rest.
