On a Google TV device, create a kids profile to choose allowed apps, impose movie and TV rating limits, set a daily viewing allowance and bedtime, and require an adult PIN to leave the profile. Devices using the older Android TV interface may instead offer a PIN-protected restricted profile that limits access to selected apps. These controls do not automatically filter recommendations or searches inside streaming apps, so configure each app’s own parental controls as well.
“Android TV” can describe several generations of televisions and streaming devices. The menus you see may be Google TV (Google’s newer interface) or the classic Android TV interface. Their child-safety tools are different: Google TV has a kids profile with content ratings and time schedules, while supported Android TV devices have a restricted profile focused on app access. Availability and labels vary by manufacturer, model and region, so use the names shown on your screen.
Google TV kids profile: the broadest set of controls
Google’s kids profile is designed to keep a child in a separate space where you select apps, apply movie and television ratings, and manage viewing time. A child can use the profile without having an email address or password of their own. Google notes that kids profiles are not available on every device or in every region; if the options below are missing, your device may not support them.

Create the profile
- From the Google TV home screen, open your profile picture or initial.
- Select Add account, then Add a kid.
- Choose an existing child in your family group, or follow the on-screen steps to add one.
- Select the apps that should appear on the child’s home screen and complete the parental-control prompts.
The profile setup is documented in Google’s Google kids profile instructions. If no child profile option appears, check the device’s region and software support rather than assuming the setting is hidden under a different adult account.

Allow or hide apps
After the profile exists, open All settings → Accounts & Profiles, select the child’s profile, and choose Manage apps. Authenticate as the adult when prompted, then allow or hide apps. This is the first line of defense against unsuitable services, games or browsers: an app that is not allowed will not appear in the child profile’s app row.
App visibility is not the same as filtering everything an app can show. A permitted streaming app can still present its own catalog, recommendations and search results. Use the app’s internal parental-control options as a second layer.
Set movie and TV rating limits
In the child profile’s settings, open Content restrictions and set the permitted movie and television ratings. Google applies these limits to recommendations it supplies on the kids profile, including popular-title recommendations, and to titles shared through Family Library. Rating systems and available levels can differ by country, so select the levels that match the rating scheme displayed on your device.

These limits do not govern recommendations or search results supplied directly by third-party apps. If a child can search inside a streaming service, configure that service’s profile restrictions separately. Google’s overview of the scope and exceptions is in Use parental controls on Google TV.

Set daily viewing limits and bedtime
Time controls are configured on the television, inside the child profile’s Screen time settings. They are schedules for that Google TV profile, not a measurement of every screen the child uses.
Daily limit
Choose the days and set a daily allowance in 15-minute increments, up to eight hours per day. You can set different allowances for different days, such as a shorter school-night limit and a longer weekend limit. When the allowance expires, the profile reaches its time-out screen.
Bedtime
Set a bedtime schedule by day. Bedtime values use 30-minute increments, allowing different start and end times for school nights and weekends. Bedtime is a scheduled window; it is separate from the daily number of minutes available.
Bonus time
An adult who is present at the time-out screen can add bonus time in 15-minute increments, up to eight hours. Treat this as a deliberate override for an occasional event, not as a way to change the standing schedule. The daily limit and bonus-time caps are product settings published by Google, not evidence that the child’s total use across phones, tablets or other televisions is being tracked.

Require an adult credential with Kids lock
Without an exit lock, a child who can switch profiles may be able to leave the restricted space. To require adult approval, go to All settings → Accounts & Profiles, select the child’s profile, choose Kids lock, and verify the adult account. Once enabled, leaving the kids profile requires the adult PIN or password. Keep the credential private; the lock is effective only if the child cannot authenticate as the adult.
What Google TV controls do—and do not—cover
- Covered on the kids profile: apps you allow or hide, Google-provided movie and TV recommendations, popular-title recommendations, Family Library content, daily limits and bedtime.
- Not automatically covered: recommendations and searches generated inside a third-party app, or viewing on another device.
- App-level action required: open each streaming app’s parental-control or child-profile settings and apply its own PIN, age filter or profile restriction where available.
This boundary matters because a child can stay inside the Google TV kids profile yet still browse material an app itself recommends. Google explicitly advises checking apps for their own restriction options. Do not assume a TV-level rating limit overrides an app’s catalog.
How Family Link fits in
Family Link can complement the TV settings, but it does not replace them. Google says the Google TV daily limit and downtime schedule can be set only on Google TV, not through Family Link. Family Link can show app activity and let a parent block or unblock apps.

Not every Family Link parental-control feature is available for a kids profile, so verify the control you need on the television itself. Classic Android TV: create a restricted profile
Some devices that use the older Android TV interface offer a separate restricted profile. Google describes it as a way to prevent people from using specific apps or games. It is not the same feature as a Google TV kids profile: the documented controls center on a PIN and an allow-list of apps, not movie-rating filters or daily and bedtime schedules.
Set up the restricted profile
- Open Settings → Personal → Security & Restrictions.
- Select Create restricted profile.
- Set a PIN when prompted. This PIN is needed to edit the profile or leave it.
- Open Allowed apps and turn on only the apps the child may use.
- Return to the Android TV home screen and switch into the restricted profile to test what the child sees.
Menu names can differ by manufacturer and software version. If Personal or Security & Restrictions is absent, look for a similarly named users, accounts or security section in the device’s settings or consult the manufacturer’s manual. Google’s official procedure and limitations are listed at Block people from using specific apps or games on Android TV.
Important restricted-profile limitations
- The restricted profile cannot access or make purchases in Google Play Store.
- It cannot use third-party apps that do not use Google sign-in.
- The feature controls which installed apps are available; the Android TV help page does not document daily-minute limits, bedtime schedules or movie/TV rating controls for this profile.
Those limitations can make the restricted profile unsuitable if a child’s required app does not support Google sign-in. Test every allowed app before handing over the remote.

Google states that exiting a restricted profile after forgetting its PIN requires a factory data reset. A reset erases saved information such as installed apps and channels. Record the PIN in a secure password manager or another adult-only location before enabling the profile; recovery is intentionally destructive.

Choose the Google TV kids profile when time schedules and rating controls matter. Choose a restricted profile when your device lacks kids profiles and a simple app allow-list is sufficient. They are separate systems; one does not automatically provide the other’s controls.
A practical setup checklist
- Confirm whether the home screen says Google TV or presents classic Android TV settings.
- Create the child profile or restricted profile using an adult account and a private credential.
- Allow only the apps the child needs, then open each one and test its own child mode or PIN.
- On Google TV, set movie and TV ratings under Content restrictions.
- Set a per-day allowance and bedtime under Screen time settings; verify the displayed increments and days.
- Turn on Kids lock so switching to an adult profile requires approval.
- Check Family Link separately if you need app activity reports or app blocking, remembering that TV daily limits and downtime remain device-side.
- Test the setup from the child profile: search inside each permitted app, open recommendations, wait for a limit or bedtime, and confirm that leaving the profile requests adult credentials.
Common problems and fixes
The kids-profile option is missing
Kids profiles are not universal. Check the device model, region and software updates, then look for a manufacturer-specific user or profile menu. If support is unavailable, use a restricted profile when the device offers one and apply controls inside each app.
A child still sees unsuitable titles
Verify that the title is not coming from an app’s own recommendations or search results. Google TV’s rating limits do not filter those results. Tighten the app’s internal profile or PIN settings, or hide the app from Manage apps.
The child bypasses the time limit
Confirm that the child is still in the kids profile and that Kids lock is enabled. Family Link cannot set the Google TV daily limit or downtime, so adjust those values on the television. Also remember that the schedule applies only to that Google TV profile, not to other devices.
An allowed app will not run in a restricted profile
Check whether the app relies on a sign-in method other than Google sign-in. Classic restricted profiles cannot use third-party apps that do not use Google sign-in, even if the app appears installed. Use a Google TV kids profile, an app’s own child mode, or the manufacturer’s supported alternative if that requirement blocks access.
Bottom line for parents
Start with a Google TV kids profile whenever your device and region support it: it combines app selection, movie and TV ratings, daily limits, bedtime and an adult-only exit lock. Treat app-level controls as mandatory for services that provide their own recommendations or search. On older Android TV devices, a restricted profile is a useful PIN-protected app allow-list, but it does not provide the documented Google TV schedules and it carries Play Store, sign-in and PIN-recovery limitations.
