For a smart-home upgrade, the Google TV Streamer (4K) is the clearest fit: Google lists Matter support and a built-in Thread border router alongside its streaming features. If you need USB expansion, advanced audio passthrough, or GeForce NOW, the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro is the more relevant option. And if you are replacing your television, a TV with Google TV built in may make a separate streamer unnecessary.
Those are use-case recommendations, not a definitive top-five ranking. The available official specifications do not establish five comparable current Android TV streamers across regions and features.
Which Android TV device suits your smart-home plans?
Android TV OS and Google TV are related but not identical terms. Google TV is the interface and experience found on the Google TV Streamer and on televisions from several manufacturers; Android TV OS is the underlying platform Google lists for the Streamer. The right choice depends on whether you need smart-home interoperability, media expansion, or a new television.

Is the Google TV Streamer the best choice for a smart-home hub?
It is the clearest match in this selection if your priority is connecting entertainment and smart-home control. Google describes the Streamer as a hub for Google Home and Matter, and its specifications list both Matter and a built-in Thread border router. That combination is more directly relevant to compatible smart-home devices than storage or gaming features.

When does the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro make more sense?
Choose it when the equipment you already own matters more than built-in smart-home connectivity. NVIDIA lists two USB 3.0 ports and expandable storage, useful if you want to attach accessories or increase local storage. It also lists Gigabit Ethernet, GeForce NOW, and audio passthrough for formats including Dolby TrueHD, DTS-X, and DTS-HD, which can matter in a home-theater setup with compatible equipment.

Could a Google TV television replace a separate streamer?
Yes. If you are buying a new television, Google’s product catalog lists Google TV models from Hisense, Philips, Sony, and TCL. A built-in platform may eliminate the need for an add-on device, though it does not mean every TV has the same panel, ports, audio support, or smart-home features as a standalone streamer. Compare the television’s display and connectivity specifications separately from its streaming interface. Browse Google’s TV product catalog.
What to check before buying for 4K
Successful 4K playback depends on the full connection chain, not just the streamer. Google’s requirements specify a 4K-capable display and an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps for 4K content. Google also says HDCP 2.2 is required for 4K; its general display requirement is HDCP 1.3 or higher. HDR playback requires an HDR-capable display. Google’s display and internet requirements.
