For most people who want a box-style Android TV device, the Google TV Streamer (4K) is the clearest all-round pick: it supports up to 4K HDR at 60 FPS, has 32 GB of storage and built-in Gigabit Ethernet. Choose an NVIDIA SHIELD TV instead if local media playback, AI-enhanced upscaling or gaming matters more to you. These recommendations are based on manufacturer specifications, not hands-on testing.
Which Android TV box is best for you?
- Pick Google TV Streamer (4K) for a general-purpose streaming box with 4K HDR support, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, built-in Ethernet and more listed memory and storage than Chromecast with Google TV (4K).
- Consider NVIDIA SHIELD TV if you want AI-enhanced upscaling, GeForce NOW cloud gaming or Android gaming.
- Consider SHIELD TV Pro specifically if you need features NVIDIA identifies as Pro features, including Plex Media Server, USB 3.0, expandable storage or USB tuner/DVR support. Don’t assume those features apply to the standard SHIELD TV.
Your TV’s resolution and the content you watch affect the result: a 4K-capable box cannot make a lower-resolution TV display 4K, and not every title is available in every format. Google recommends a 4K TV for the best experience.

Why choose Google TV Streamer (4K)?
It is a well-equipped general-purpose box
Google lists 4 GB of memory, 32 GB of storage, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.1, HDMI 2.1 and USB-C power/data ports. Its listed video formats are Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG; audio formats include Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos. These are support specifications, not a promise that every app, title, TV or audio setup will use every format.
Ethernet is built in
The Streamer’s Ethernet port is rated at 10/100/1000 Mbps. That can be useful if you prefer a wired connection or your Wi-Fi signal is unreliable. The cited specifications do not establish that Ethernet will improve performance in every home; actual results depend on the network and service.

When does NVIDIA SHIELD make more sense?
For upscaling and gaming features
NVIDIA lists playback up to 4K, AI-enhanced upscaling, GeForce NOW cloud gaming and Android gaming for SHIELD TV. Those features make it a candidate for someone who values those capabilities; the cited pages do not establish benchmark superiority over the Google TV Streamer or provide a current price comparison.
For local media or expandable storage, check the exact model
NVIDIA’s comparison assigns Plex Media Server, USB 3.0, expandable storage and USB tuner/DVR features to SHIELD TV Pro. If one of these is essential, verify the exact model before buying rather than assuming the standard SHIELD TV includes it. The official product information is on NVIDIA’s model comparison page.
What should you check before buying?
- Confirm your TV connection. The Google TV Streamer connects over HDMI. Check that the TV has an available HDMI input and that its resolution suits your expectations.
- Check the video and audio chain. The Streamer lists 4K HDR and Dolby formats, but your TV, any receiver or soundbar, and the content must also support the formats you want.
- Decide whether you need wired networking. The Streamer has built-in Ethernet. If wired networking is a priority for another model, verify how that model provides it rather than assuming it is built in.
- Check the exact SHIELD model. Match Pro-specific needs such as Plex Media Server, USB 3.0, expandable storage or tuner/DVR support to the Pro model.
- Check the live local listing. Prices, stock and geographic availability can change. Google’s US Store page displayed $149.99 for the Streamer when checked, while Google’s support comparison page displayed $99.99; those official pages conflict, so neither figure should be treated as a definitive current price. Regional pricing and availability are not established here.
Do you need to buy an HDMI cable?
Google lists a certified HDMI 2.1 cable as required for Google TV Streamer and says it is sold separately. Check whether you already have a compatible cable before purchasing one; the cited specifications do not establish that a cable is included.
