Start with the display: lower brightness, enable adaptive brightness if it remains comfortable, and shorten the screen timeout. Next, use Battery settings to find apps with unusually high use, keep Adaptive Battery enabled, and reserve Battery Saver for periods when extra runtime matters more than instant background updates. Turn off hotspot or unneeded radios only when you accept the lost functionality. Menu names differ by manufacturer and Android version, so use your phone maker’s support instructions for the exact path.
A practical order for changing Android settings
Battery improvements are usually cumulative rather than the result of one magic switch. Make changes in this order so you address the largest everyday causes first:
- Reduce screen brightness or turn on adaptive brightness, then shorten screen timeout.
- Check Battery usage and restrict apps that consume power in the background without providing a benefit.
- Leave Adaptive Battery enabled when your phone offers it.
- Use Battery Saver when the remaining charge or the situation justifies slower background activity.
- Stop an unused hotspot and prefer Wi-Fi to mobile data where practical; change Location, Bluetooth, or mobile connectivity only when their functions are not needed.
- Investigate heat, demanding activities, software updates, and battery health if the phone still drains abnormally.
Google does not publish a universal percentage gain for any of these settings. The result depends on the display, apps, network signal, hardware, and your habits.
Reduce the display’s power demand first
Lower brightness or use adaptive brightness
Open Settings and search for Brightness if you cannot find the control under Display. Lowering brightness reduces the power required to illuminate the screen. Adaptive brightness can adjust the level automatically as lighting changes; enable it if its decisions remain readable and comfortable. If it repeatedly makes the screen brighter than you want, manual brightness at a lower level may be the better compromise.

Do not lower brightness so far that you struggle to read the phone. Repeatedly increasing brightness, using the phone longer to decipher text, or keeping the screen on while searching for a setting can erase the intended benefit.
Shorten screen timeout
In Settings > Display, look for Screen timeout, Screen sleep, or a similarly named option. Choose the shortest interval that still fits how you read, navigate, or follow recipes. A shorter timeout prevents an unattended display from consuming power for minutes after you put the phone down. Some phones expose a separate setting that keeps the screen on while you are looking at it; disable that only if you do not need the convenience.
Pixel-only examples: Always-on Display and Smooth Display
On supported Pixel phones, Google identifies Always-on Display and Smooth Display as additional display options to review. Always-on Display keeps information visible while the phone is locked. Smooth Display raises the refresh rate for supported content, which can make motion look more fluid but uses more battery. The exact labels, availability, and menu locations vary by Pixel model and Android release, so treat these as Pixel examples rather than universal Android instructions.

Dark theme is a low-effort option under Settings > Display on many devices. Google says it can save battery on some screens, so the benefit depends on the phone’s display technology, the colors an app uses, and how often that app is open. It is not a guaranteed large saving. Battery Saver may switch Dark theme on automatically, depending on the device.

Find high-use apps and manage background activity
Android records which apps have used the most battery. Open Settings > Battery, then Battery usage or Battery usage by app. The wording and graph differ among manufacturers. Review the period shown and look for an app whose use is disproportionate to how much you used it.
- Tap a high-use app to open its battery controls.
- Check whether the consumption occurred while the app was on screen or in the background. A navigation, video, camera, or game session can legitimately appear high.
- Choose the available background option, such as Optimized or Restricted, when you can tolerate delayed notifications, syncing, uploads, or location updates.
- Leave essential communication, alarm, accessibility, health, and security apps unrestricted when timely operation matters. If an app stops working correctly after restriction, return it to the previous setting.
Restricting every app is counterproductive. Android may delay useful work, and you may open the app repeatedly to check for updates. Target apps that run unnecessarily, not the ones that simply perform demanding work while you are actively using them.
Keep Adaptive Battery enabled
When offered, Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use most and limits resources for less-used apps. Look under Settings > Battery, Adaptive preferences, or use Settings search for “Adaptive Battery.” Keep it enabled unless you have a specific troubleshooting reason to turn it off.

That timing is Pixel-specific; other manufacturers implement their own versions and may use different names. Do not judge the feature solely by the first day or two of a new setup.

Use Battery Saver when runtime is worth the trade-off
Battery Saver is a situational control, not a permanent performance upgrade. Open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver, or search Settings for “Battery Saver,” to turn it on manually. Many phones also provide a schedule so it activates at a chosen battery level or according to a routine; the available triggers depend on the device.
When active, Battery Saver can limit background activity and delay some visual effects, features, network connections, and app work. Notifications, email synchronization, navigation updates, or other background tasks may arrive later. Some phones also change the display theme or other behavior while it is enabled. Check the on-screen description before accepting those limits.
Turn it on before a long trip, during an outage, or when you know a charger will be unavailable. If you need real-time navigation, instant messaging, an active hotspot, or uninterrupted uploads, test the consequences first or exempt only the necessary function if your phone allows it.

Change connectivity and location only when you accept lost functions
Prefer Wi-Fi when it is reliable
Google recommends Wi-Fi instead of mobile data where practical. A stable Wi-Fi connection can reduce cellular-radio work, particularly where mobile coverage is weak. This is a practical choice, not a rule to connect to every available network: use a trusted network and remember that changing networks can affect VPNs, work profiles, or data policies.

Turn off hotspot when nobody is connected
A hotspot keeps the phone’s radio active and can serve other devices continuously. Disable it from Quick Settings or Settings > Network & internet (the menu name varies) as soon as the other device no longer needs access.
Use Airplane mode only when you do not need mobile service
Airplane mode can stop cellular communication and other radios, but it also cuts calls, texts, and mobile data unless you manually re-enable selected connections. It is useful on a flight, in a dead-signal area where you do not need service, or while reading downloaded content. It is not appropriate if you must remain reachable.
Be cautious with Location and Bluetooth
Turning off Location can reduce location-related work, but Google warns that some apps and features will not function without it. Disable it only when you can accept losing navigation, geofencing, emergency features, device-finding, or other location-dependent behavior. Bluetooth has a similar trade-off: switch it off when no connected accessory is needed, but expect headphones, watches, car systems, and accessibility devices to disconnect.

Even well-tuned settings cannot make demanding workloads inexpensive. Google lists prolonged navigation, video playback, graphics-heavy games, hotspot use, GPS, streaming, calls while moving, camera use, and long sessions in an app among activities that can drain a battery quickly. A high reading during one of these activities is not automatically evidence of a faulty battery.

Reduce the duration or intensity of the workload when possible: download media before traveling, stop navigation when you arrive, close a hotspot after use, lower display brightness during a long video, and avoid recording or gaming while the phone is already hot. These are usage decisions rather than hidden Android switches, but they often matter more than changing a rarely used setting.
Why your menu may not match a Pixel guide
Android settings are manufacturer- and version-dependent. Google notes that some instructions apply only to Android 13 or later and directs users to the phone manufacturer for exact steps. A Pixel path can therefore be a useful example without being a universal menu map. Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other manufacturers may rename Battery usage, place controls under device-care menus, or omit a feature on particular models.
Use the Settings search field for terms such as brightness, screen timeout, battery usage, adaptive battery, battery saver, dark theme, and hotspot. Then verify the description shown for your model. Some Pixel features are limited to particular models or Android versions, and Adaptive connectivity may be restricted by some US carriers.
If the phone still drains unusually fast
- Restart the phone. A stuck process or radio service can temporarily keep the device busy.
- Install available Android and app updates. Updates can correct runaway background activity or compatibility problems.
- Recheck Battery usage after a normal day rather than judging from a single short period.
- Look for heat, a weak-signal location, a recently installed app, or a workload such as navigation or video that explains the pattern.
- Contact the manufacturer or carrier if the drain persists after these checks. They can provide model-specific diagnostics and determine whether hardware service is needed.
Protect the battery while you tune settings
Heat is both a drain symptom and a cause of faster loss. Google Android Help states: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Heat can also damage the battery. Move the phone out of direct sun, remove insulating covers during heavy charging or gaming if safe, and stop a demanding task long enough for the device to cool.
Use the power adapter supplied with the phone when possible. Google warns that other adapters can charge slowly or damage the phone or battery. A different charger is not a battery-life setting and does not create a permanent runtime gain; it only changes how the phone receives power.
The most defensible strategy is therefore selective: make the display less wasteful, control genuinely high-use background apps, allow Adaptive Battery to learn, and deploy Battery Saver or radio changes only when their functional limits are acceptable.
