Before launching a game, set interruptions first, then choose performance and display options for the session you are about to play. Use Do Not Disturb (or your phone’s game mode) to control calls and alerts, open the available Game Dashboard or manufacturer gaming panel, and change refresh-rate or performance settings only when your phone and the game support them. Menu names and capabilities differ by model, Android version, manufacturer and region.
Start with a 30-second pre-game check
The safest order is to protect your attention, confirm the game controls that are actually available, and only then trade battery life for smoothness. Android does not provide one universal “gaming settings” page: a Pixel phone, a Samsung phone and another manufacturer’s device can expose different menus or omit the same feature entirely.
- Silence interruptions. Turn on Do Not Disturb or a game-specific mode, then verify which people, apps, alarms and repeat callers are still allowed.
- Open the gaming overlay. Look for Game Dashboard, Game Booster or a similarly named control panel while the game is running.
- Choose the session goal. Competitive play favors stable frame delivery and a cool, responsive phone; a long session away from a charger favors lower power use.
- Check display and performance options. Higher refresh rates and performance modes are useful only when both the device and game can take advantage of them.
- Watch temperature and battery. If the phone becomes hot or drains quickly, return to a lower refresh rate or battery-focused mode before the system limits performance itself.
Silence notifications without blocking what matters
Pixel: configure Do Not Disturb filters
On a Pixel, open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb. Configure the people, apps and other interruptions that may break through. Pixel’s controls include an option for repeat callers and a duration choice when Do Not Disturb is started from Quick Settings.

Review these exceptions before a tournament or ranked match. You can allow an urgent contact, an alarm or repeat calls deliberately, but an exception that you forgot about can still produce a banner, sound or vibration over the game. If you want a one-session setting, use a duration rather than leaving Do Not Disturb scheduled indefinitely.
Samsung: use Modes and Routines with a Game mode
Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance moved the older Game Booster Priority workflow for muting calls and notifications into Modes and Routines. Create or edit a Game mode and add Do Not Disturb as one of its actions. The exact labels and available actions can differ by One UI version, model and region, so use the wording shown on your phone rather than following an older screenshot.

After creating the mode, test it with a non-critical message or call. Confirm that the game starts the mode when expected and that your chosen emergency exceptions still work. If your phone does not offer a Game mode, configure ordinary Do Not Disturb from Settings or Quick Settings instead.
Other Android phones
Search Settings for Do Not Disturb, Modes, Game or Gaming. A manufacturer may combine interruption blocking with touch protection, performance controls or screen recording. Do not assume that a missing “Game Booster” label means Do Not Disturb is unavailable; the notification controls may be separate.
Find the Game Dashboard or the manufacturer’s gaming panel
Android Developers describes Game Dashboard as “an overlay displayed on top of a running game to provide features to enhance the gaming experience.” On supported Pixel devices running Android 12 or newer, the overlay can provide shortcuts such as an FPS counter, screenshots, screen recording, Do Not Disturb and Game Mode.
Launch the game first, then look for the dashboard handle or gaming icon. If nothing appears, search Settings for Game Dashboard or Game. Other manufacturers may replace the Android overlay with their own panel, and some devices strip it out altogether. Manufacturer support instructions are more reliable than assuming every Android phone has the Pixel interface.

- FPS counter: useful for seeing whether a change affects reported frame delivery, but it does not guarantee that every frame is rendered at the display’s maximum rate.
- Do Not Disturb shortcut: a quick way to start interruption control after you have checked its exceptions.
- Screen recording and screenshots: convenient for documenting a bug or match, but recording adds workload and can increase power use.
- Game Mode shortcut: available only where the device and game support the relevant implementation.
Choose Game Mode or performance settings with realistic expectations
What Android Game Mode can and cannot do
Android Game Mode is available only on selected devices running Android 12 or later. It can expose a performance-oriented or battery-oriented choice, but the result depends on the phone maker’s implementation and on whether the game supports the Game Mode API. A toggle therefore cannot promise a higher frame rate, lower latency or better graphics in every title.
Some games have their own graphics, frame-rate or battery profiles. Those in-game controls can matter more than a system switch because the game knows which rendering features it can reduce. Change one control at a time and observe the game’s own performance indicator or the dashboard FPS counter.

Do not confuse Game Mode with Battery Saver
Android’s technical documentation distinguishes a game’s battery mode from the system-level Battery Saver setting. A game that implements the Game Mode API is responsible for its own optimizations; Battery Saver is a separate system policy that can restrict background work and alter display behavior. Turning on one does not automatically configure the other.
For a plugged-in competitive session, a performance choice may be reasonable if your phone remains cool. For a long trip without a charger, select the game’s battery option or a lower-power profile when available, and avoid enabling several aggressive performance features at once.

Samsung Game Booster caveat
Samsung Game Booster can expose game-performance choices, but One UI 7 changed parts of the setup and Samsung states that availability varies by software version, device model and region. Check the controls shown inside your game or Game Booster rather than relying on a path from an older One UI release.
Set refresh rate for smoothness, battery and heat
Why a 90 Hz or 120 Hz screen does not guarantee 90 or 120 FPS
Refresh rate is how often the display can update; frame rate is how quickly the game produces frames. Android’s refresh-rate guidance says that Android 15 defaults games to 60 Hz to optimize power, and a game must request higher rates for higher frame rates. The system can still limit a request when battery level or device temperature makes it necessary.
A high-refresh panel can make menus, camera movement and supported gameplay look smoother, but it cannot manufacture frames that the game or processor does not deliver. If the game is capped at 60 FPS, selecting 120 Hz may add power use without changing gameplay smoothness.
Pixel: Smooth Display
On supported Pixel models, Smooth Display can raise the refresh rate for some content. Google notes that it increases battery use and is disabled while Battery Saver is on. The maximum rate and the availability of the setting depend on the Pixel model. If Smooth Display is missing, your model may not support it, the current mode may be restricting it, or Battery Saver may be active.

Samsung: Motion smoothness
Samsung calls its refresh-rate control Motion smoothness. The usual choices are:

Samsung notes that some models do not support 120 Hz at WQHD+ resolution. It also states that Power saving mode sets Motion smoothness to Standard. Verify the exact combination of resolution, refresh rate and power mode on your phone before a demanding session.
Match settings to the kind of session you are about to play

These are starting points, not guarantees. A game with a 60-FPS cap gains little from a higher display rate, while a demanding 3D title may become less stable when a performance mode pushes the phone into thermal limits.
Exact setup sequence before pressing Play
- Check the battery and charger plan. Decide whether the session must last unplugged. This determines whether battery life or peak performance is the sensible priority.
- Enable interruption control. On Pixel, use Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb; on Samsung, use the Game mode you created in Modes and Routines; elsewhere, use the closest Do Not Disturb or gaming control.
- Review exceptions. Check allowed people, apps, alarms and repeat callers. Do not assume a game mode has copied your normal Do Not Disturb policy.
- Open the game’s own settings. Look for frame-rate, resolution, graphics-quality and battery options. Make only one major change at a time.
- Open the overlay. Start the game and launch Game Dashboard, Game Booster or the manufacturer equivalent. Turn on an FPS counter only if you need to diagnose performance.
- Select a system game mode. Choose performance, balanced or battery only when your device presents the option. Remember that support is device- and game-dependent.
- Set refresh rate. Use Smooth Display on a supported Pixel or Motion smoothness on a supported Samsung model. If Battery Saver or Power saving is active, it may force a lower rate.
- Play a representative scene for several minutes. Watch frame consistency, heat and battery drain. A setting that looks good for a menu may behave differently during a crowded battle or high-resolution scene.
Fix the most common problems
Notifications still appear
Reopen Do Not Disturb and inspect allowed people, apps, alarms and repeat callers. A game overlay shortcut may have started a different mode from the one you configured. Also check whether the alert is a system-critical notification that your phone does not permit you to suppress.

Game Dashboard or Game Booster is missing
Confirm that the phone is running a supported Android or manufacturer software version, then search Settings for “Game” and “Dashboard.” Pixel’s documented dashboard applies to Pixel devices on Android 12 or newer; another manufacturer may replace it or omit it. Use the maker’s current support instructions for your model.
The FPS counter does not improve after enabling performance mode
Check the game’s own frame-rate cap and graphics settings first. The game may not implement Android Game Mode, the processor may already be the limiting factor, or Android may be holding back the requested rate because of temperature or battery conditions. A display set to 120 Hz cannot overcome a 60-FPS game cap.

Reduce refresh rate, switch from performance to balanced or battery mode, stop recording, and close overlays you do not need. Higher refresh demand and sustained rendering can increase heat; once the device reaches a thermal limit, the system may reduce performance automatically.
The refresh-rate option is unavailable
Availability is model-specific. Battery Saver on Pixel disables Smooth Display, while Samsung Power saving mode sets Motion smoothness to Standard. Samsung models can also restrict 120 Hz at WQHD+ resolution. Turn off the restrictive power mode only if the session’s battery and temperature plan justify it.
