After installing LineageOS, begin with four checks: secure the lock screen, limit app permissions and lock-screen exposure, run the LineageOS updater, and read the installation instructions for your exact phone model and variant. Then decide whether you need Google Apps (GApps) or MicroG. There is no universal set of toggles that every LineageOS installation should change: menu names depend on the Android version, LineageOS build, device, and whether Google services were installed.
Start with these settings, in this order
Use this sequence immediately after the first successful boot. It separates protections that apply to almost everyone from choices that depend on your apps and privacy priorities.
| Priority | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Screen lock and lock-screen notifications | Protects the device and prevents messages, one-time codes, or other private information appearing to anyone who can see the display. |
| 2 | App permissions | Removes unnecessary access to location, camera, microphone, contacts, files, photos, and nearby devices. |
| 3 | LineageOS and security status | Confirms that the installed build is current and helps distinguish operating-system updates from firmware updates. |
| 4 | Exact device instructions | Model-specific firmware, bootloader, modem, vendor, and recovery requirements cannot be inferred from a similar-looking phone. |
| 5 | Google-services choice | Determines notification behavior, app availability, data flows, and whether you must reset and reinstall add-ons. |
Secure the lock screen and reduce exposure
Set a primary screen lock
Open the Settings app and look for Security, Security and privacy, or a similarly named lock-screen section. Android Help documents these controls, but Android 13 and later may combine security and privacy into one area, while Android 12 and earlier commonly show separate Security and Privacy sections.

Decide what appears before unlocking
In the lock-screen or notification settings, review whether notifications show their full content, hide sensitive content, or remain entirely hidden. Hiding details is preferable if your phone displays authentication codes, health information, work messages, or private conversations where other people can see it. Check notification behavior for both the lock screen and any always-on display feature, because they may have separate controls.
Do not treat a fingerprint setup as a reason to remove the PIN or password. Android requires the stronger credential in situations such as a restart or after a security timeout.
Review privacy controls and every sensitive permission
Use the Privacy dashboard or permission manager
Open Privacy or Security and privacy, then inspect the permission manager and recent-access history. The exact labels vary by Android release and LineageOS build. Start with permissions that can reveal your location, conversations, surroundings, identity, or files:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Location
- Camera
- Microphone
- Contacts
- Phone and call logs
- Photos and videos or files
- Nearby devices
- Notifications, where the installed build exposes notification access separately
For each app, ask what its intended function requires. A mapping app may need location while you navigate; a calculator normally does not. A camera app needs camera access when taking a picture, but an unrelated game should not. Where Android offers Allow only while using the app, use it instead of permanent access. Use Ask every time or Don’t allow when the feature is occasional or unnecessary.
Check special access separately
Some powerful capabilities are not ordinary runtime permissions. Look for menus such as Special app access and review display-over-other-apps, install-unknown-apps, unrestricted battery use, notification access, usage access, accessibility services, and device-administrator apps. Grant these only when you understand why a particular app needs them. An accessibility service, for example, can observe and interact with much of the screen, so it deserves more scrutiny than a normal permission prompt.

Use LineageOS privacy and security status screens
Many LineageOS builds include a Trust app or a security-and-privacy status screen. Use the version present on your phone to inspect warnings and available controls. The name and placement can change between releases, so do not rely on a universal tap sequence copied from another device. Treat a warning as a prompt to investigate rather than as a reason to disable a protection.
Do not turn off core security features, SELinux enforcement, verified-boot protections, or other safeguards merely because an online setup guide calls them unnecessary. The official device-support criteria expect supported builds to preserve core security properties; a generic “privacy tweak” can make the phone less safe or break updates.
Check LineageOS updates, security levels, and firmware
Run the built-in updater
- Open Settings.
- Open System, then Updater or System updater (the wording depends on the build).
- Check for an offered LineageOS build and read its version and date.
- Install it according to the on-screen instructions, with sufficient battery and storage.
LineageOS device-support requirements call for upgrade support through the native updater and the recovery documented for that device. If the updater offers a build, that is the normal post-install route; do not substitute a package intended for another model or variant.
Understand what an update does not necessarily include
LineageOS distinguishes the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) security patch level, the vendor security patch level, and proprietary device firmware. A newer LineageOS build does not automatically mean that every modem, bootloader, radio, camera component, or vendor partition has been updated. Firmware is device-specific and may be required at a particular version before installation or later upgrades.
Read the official installation page for the exact model and regional variant. Device pages can require a particular stock-firmware base, bootloader state, recovery image, or installation sequence. The examples published for one phone, such as a device code-named sunfish or 10.or G, are not instructions for every phone.

Test hardware that you rely on
Before deleting your previous backup or making the phone your only communication device, test cellular calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, camera focus and flash, fingerprint unlock, NFC, GPS, vibration, sensors, speakers, charging, and any work profile. Project support criteria seek working hardware, but they also allow documented deviations. A device page’s quirks section is the authoritative place to learn about known differences from the stock software.

Choose GApps, MicroG, or no Google service layer deliberately
Google services are an optional configuration decision, not a universal security setting. Base the choice on the apps, account integration, notification behavior, and data-sharing preferences that matter to you.
| Path | When it fits | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| GApps | You depend on Google applications, Google service APIs, or apps that expect the standard Google notification infrastructure. | Follow the exact device guide and install at the required point in the process, normally before the first boot into the newly installed system. |
| MicroG | You want an alternative service layer for some applications while avoiding the full Google package. | LineageOS specifically notes that MicroG users must enable GCM for push notifications. Do not assume feature parity with GApps. |
| No service layer | You prefer a minimal installation and accept that some applications and notification systems may not work. | Test the apps you need before relying on the phone for time-sensitive alerts. |
Why installation timing matters
LineageOS’s FAQ explains that the first boot performs critical initialization. If you boot the newly installed system and only later decide to add GApps, the supported process requires a factory reset, sideloading the package, and then booting again. That erases user data, so make the decision before the first boot and keep a recoverable backup.
MicroG can provide an alternative for some service-dependent applications, but enabling GCM is necessary for push notifications according to the LineageOS guidance. Notification delivery still depends on the application and its service requirements; neither option guarantees that every app behaves like it did on a stock device.
Set realistic expectations for app compatibility
Banking, contactless payment, streaming, enterprise, and digital-rights-management applications can make their own integrity decisions. The LineageOS FAQ notes that some apps may exclude devices based on Play Integrity-related signals, and the project does not alter those validation responses. Installing GApps or changing a privacy toggle cannot guarantee acceptance.

After setup, install the applications you actually need and test sign-in, notifications, camera uploads, payments, media playback, and work authentication. If one app fails, record the exact error and check the app developer’s supported-device policy rather than weakening system security or relocking the bootloader as an experiment.
Do not relock the bootloader as a routine final step
A locked bootloader can sound like an obvious security improvement, but LineageOS warns that few devices support relocking safely. On an unsupported model or with the wrong signing state, relocking can make the phone unusable. It can also prevent you from following the recovery or update procedure documented for your device.
Only consider relocking if the official instructions for your exact device explicitly support it and specify the complete procedure. Do not infer support from a similar model, a different regional variant, or a generic Android tutorial. If the device page does not document safe relocking, leave the bootloader state required by the installation instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Avoid generic debloating and developer-option recipes
Removing system applications with a script or package manager can break dependencies, setup components, radios, or future updates. Device installation guidance warns that deleting system components can render the system unstable. Uninstall ordinary user apps through Settings first; treat anything in the system partition as part of the device’s supported software unless the device documentation says otherwise.
Developer options are useful for development and troubleshooting, but there is no universal post-install requirement to enable them, turn on USB debugging, alter animation scales, or change background-process limits. Enable only the specific option you need, and turn off USB debugging when you no longer use it.

First-day verification checklist
- A secure PIN or password is configured, with biometrics added only as a convenience.
- Lock-screen notification content is appropriate for your surroundings.
- Location, camera, microphone, contacts, files, photos, and nearby-device permissions have been reviewed.
- Special app access and accessibility services contain only entries you recognize.
- The LineageOS updater has been checked, and you know the installed build and security-patch dates.
- The exact device page has been read, including firmware prerequisites and quirks.
- Calls, data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, camera, fingerprint, NFC, sensors, charging, and other essential hardware have been tested.
- You have chosen GApps, MicroG, or no service layer before restoring all application data.
- If using MicroG, GCM is enabled when push notifications are required.
- You have not relocked the bootloader or removed system components without explicit, model-specific instructions.
What to do when something does not work
No notifications arrive
First identify whether the app depends on Google services. With MicroG, verify that GCM is enabled. With no service layer, the app may have no supported push channel. Also check the app’s notification permission, battery restrictions, background-data setting, and the device page for known issues. Do not assume that reinstalling the app will create a notification service that the chosen configuration does not provide.
An update is unavailable or fails
Confirm that the phone is on an official build for the exact model and variant, has adequate storage, and is using the recovery specified by its installation page. Check whether the device page requires a particular firmware version. The absence of an updater offer does not prove that every underlying firmware component is current.
A key hardware feature is unreliable
Compare the symptom with the device page’s documented quirks, then verify firmware prerequisites and reboot once after completing updates. If cellular service, emergency calling, charging, or another essential function remains unreliable, return to the official device documentation and community support for that model instead of applying a generic system tweak.
An app refuses to run
Read the exact error, test whether the failure is tied to Google services or integrity checks, and consult the app publisher’s requirements. A refusal based on Play Integrity is an application policy decision; changing unrelated privacy controls or weakening boot security is not a dependable fix.
The practical answer
Change the settings that protect your data and make the phone usable: establish a strong lock screen, limit permissions and lock-screen exposure, verify updates, and test essential hardware. Keep the Google-services decision separate, because GApps and MicroG affect notifications and app compatibility and must be installed at the correct time. Finally, let the exact LineageOS device page—not a generic checklist—decide firmware, recovery, bootloader, and model-specific steps.
