The fastest way to reach a setting you use repeatedly is usually to move it out of the full Settings app. Edit Quick Settings so frequent controls are one or two swipes away, choose the navigation method you can use reliably, turn on one-handed mode when the top of the display is hard to reach, and schedule notification Modes for recurring quiet periods. Android version, manufacturer software, installed apps and region determine which labels and tiles you see, so use Settings search when a path does not match your phone.
These changes remove repeated navigation and reach problems; Google does not publish a universal number of seconds, taps or percentage saved. Treat “faster” as fewer layers of menus or less physical effort, not as a guaranteed benchmark.
Put everyday controls in Quick Settings
Quick Settings is the panel you open by swiping down from the top of the screen. It can expose controls while you are in another app, rather than making you open Settings and browse through categories. Google describes it as a way to find and change settings from any screen.
Edit the panel
- Swipe down once from the top edge to open the compact shade.
- Swipe down again to show the full Quick Settings panel.
- Tap Edit (the pencil icon on some phones).
- Press and hold a tile to drag it into a more useful position.
- Use the available controls to add a tile, remove one you never use, or restore a tile that was moved away.
- Tap Save, or leave the editor using your phone’s back control if no Save button appears.
Place controls you use several times a day in the first visible row: for example, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, flashlight, screen rotation, mobile data, hotspot, screen recording or a frequently used accessibility shortcut. Keep occasional controls lower in the panel so the top row remains easy to scan.

Google’s documented Quick Settings editing steps apply to Android 13 and later in some cases. Tile names and the available list can also depend on the phone maker and on apps that provide their own tiles. If you cannot find Edit or a particular control, search Settings for the feature name and check whether the device supports a tile for it.
Choose the right quick-access method

Pick navigation that fits your hand and habits
Android commonly offers gesture navigation and three-button navigation. Neither is universally faster: the better choice is the one you can discover and operate accurately without accidental touches.
Gesture navigation
With gestures enabled, swipe from a screen edge to go back, swipe up from the bottom to go Home, and swipe up and hold to see recent apps. The exact tutorial and sensitivity controls vary by device. Edge swipes can feel direct once learned, but they may conflict with an app’s own side drawer or be triggered accidentally when you hold the phone near an edge.

Three-button navigation
The traditional layout places Back, Home and Overview buttons at the bottom. It keeps each action visible, which can be easier if you switch phones often, assist another user, or find edge gestures unreliable. It uses a little more screen space and may require moving your thumb farther for some actions.
Change the navigation mode
- Open Settings.
- Use the search field for Navigation mode, System navigation or Gestures; the label depends on the manufacturer.
- Choose Gesture navigation or Three-button navigation.
- Follow the on-screen practice tutorial and adjust gesture sensitivity if that option is offered.
Test the mode in the apps you use most. If back gestures repeatedly open a drawer, or if buttons make one-handed use awkward, switch back; the setting is a comfort and reliability choice, not a promise of a measured speed increase.
Enable one-handed mode when reach is the bottleneck
One-handed mode lowers the usable portion of the display so controls near the top can be reached with a thumb. It is useful on phones with tall screens, especially when you are carrying something in the other hand. It changes the screen layout temporarily; it does not permanently resize every app.

Turn it on
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search field and type One-handed mode.
- Open the matching result and enable Use One-handed mode.
- Read the gesture or button instruction shown by your phone, then try activating it from the Home screen.
Google’s instructions include Android-version limitations, including guidance for Android 12 and later, and manufacturers may use a different activation gesture. On some phones, you can add a One-handed mode tile to Quick Settings so you do not need to search each time. If search returns no result, the feature may be unavailable, disabled by the manufacturer, or named differently.

- Keep the activation method consistent with your navigation mode; a gesture that overlaps with Back can be difficult to trigger.
- Use the reduced-screen view for short tasks such as tapping a top-bar control, then exit it when you need the full display.
- Turn it off if an app’s layout becomes confusing or if you accidentally activate it while scrolling.
Automate recurring quiet periods with Modes
Do Not Disturb and other notification Modes can silence or filter interruptions for a schedule instead of requiring a manual change every time. Typical uses include sleep, meetings, driving and focused work. A Mode can control which people, apps or alarms are allowed to notify you, depending on the options exposed by your phone.
Create or adjust a Mode
- Open Settings.
- Search for Modes or open Settings > Modes when that menu is present.
- Select an existing mode such as Do Not Disturb or Bedtime, or choose the option to create a custom mode.
- Set the people and apps that may interrupt you, along with alarm and media exceptions.
- Add a schedule, such as specific days and start and end times, if the mode should recur automatically.
- Save the mode and test it once so you know which notifications remain allowed.
After setup, open Quick Settings and tap the relevant Mode tile to start or stop it immediately. Some Google instructions for Modes require Android 14 or later. Earlier versions and manufacturer interfaces may put Do Not Disturb under Sound, Notifications or a similarly named menu rather than a single Modes page.

Prevent common scheduling mistakes
- Check the phone’s time zone and clock before relying on an overnight schedule.
- Review exceptions for emergency contacts and alarms; a mode that blocks an expected call is not a useful shortcut.
- Look at the status indicator after activation so you know whether a mode is currently running.
- Disable overlapping schedules if two modes produce unexpected filtering.
Add accessibility shortcuts for controls you actually use
Accessibility features can be made easier to toggle through a shortcut or, on supported devices, a Quick Settings tile. Examples and shortcut types differ by Android release, manufacturer and installed accessibility services, so there is no single menu sequence that applies to every phone.
Find available shortcuts
- Open Settings and search for Accessibility.
- Open the accessibility feature you want to use, such as magnification, hearing-related controls or an installed service.
- Look for Accessibility shortcut, Shortcut or Quick Settings.
- Choose an activation method offered by your phone, such as an accessibility button, a pair of volume keys, a floating button or a Quick Settings tile.
- Try the shortcut, then return to the same menu if it conflicts with another gesture or is too easy to trigger accidentally.
Only assign shortcuts to features you use often. A crowded accessibility shortcut list makes the intended action harder to find, while a dedicated tile can keep the control available without changing your navigation settings.

Android’s Settings search is the most dependable fallback when a guide’s menu names do not match your phone. Search the feature itself rather than a broad category: try “One-handed mode,” “Navigation mode,” “Do Not Disturb,” “Modes,” “Accessibility shortcut” or “Quick Settings.” Open the result that includes a switch or configuration page, and note the section name shown at the top so you can return to it later.

Menu wording and availability can vary by manufacturer, model, Android release, market and carrier software. A phone may expose a feature but omit its Quick Settings tile, or show a similar control under a different category. Android 13-or-later requirements apply to some Quick Settings instructions; some Modes instructions require Android 14 or later; one-handed mode guidance includes Android 12-and-up limitations. If an option is absent after searching, check for system updates and the phone maker’s help documentation rather than assuming a hidden switch exists.
A practical setup order
If you want to reduce friction without changing everything at once, use this sequence:
- List the three controls you open most often and put them in the first Quick Settings row.
- Choose gesture or three-button navigation after testing both in your most-used apps.
- Search for One-handed mode if reaching the top of the screen is a frequent problem, then add its tile if available.
- Create one recurring Mode for the period that causes the most interruptions and verify its exceptions.
- Add accessibility shortcuts only after identifying a feature you toggle regularly.
- After a week, remove tiles and shortcuts you do not use; the goal is a small, predictable set of controls.
What “faster” means in this context
Quick Settings can remove repeated trips through menus, one-handed mode can reduce hand repositioning, and scheduled Modes can eliminate manual notification changes. Those are practical convenience gains, but the available official guidance does not establish a fixed time, tap count or percentage for any phone. Results depend on your device, screen size, software version, hand position and familiarity with the control. Configure the shortcuts that match your routine, then keep only the ones that remain reliable.
