There is no single Android switch that guarantees every Gemini automation will keep running in the background. The correct setting depends on what you mean by automation: Gemini screen control inside another app, a scheduled action, notification or device-control assistance, or a Google Home/Assistant routine. Each uses different permissions and can be affected by different background limits.
Identify the failing feature first, enable its own permission, then check Android battery restrictions only if the supported action fails after the phone becomes idle. Choosing Unrestricted can relax some limits, but it increases battery use and is not a promise of execution.
Start by identifying the automation
Gemini’s controls are split across the Gemini app, the Google app, Android Settings, and Google Home. Changing the wrong setting will not fix a different type of automation.

Configure Gemini screen automation
Screen automation is the feature most often confused with a general background permission. It lets Gemini inspect and interact with another app’s screen. The permission controls access to that specific app; it does not turn Gemini into an unrestricted background service.

Allow a target app
- Open the Gemini mobile app.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Screen automation.
- Select the app Gemini needs to operate.
- Set that app’s permission to Always allow if you do not want to approve access each time.
The permission is per app. Allowing screen automation for one app does not authorize it for another. If the target app is missing, the task may not be supported for that app or the app may not yet be eligible for the feature.
Understand what “Always allow” does not do
Always allow prevents repeated permission prompts for the selected app. It does not keep the phone awake, bypass Android’s Doze or App Standby behavior, or guarantee that Gemini will complete a multi-step task while the device is locked or idle. Screen automation also depends on the target app’s current screen, sign-in state, network connection, and any security screen that blocks automated interaction.
Enable notification and device-control access
Notification reading or replies
For notification-based actions, the Google app—the Android host for Gemini and related digital-assistant capabilities—needs notification access. If Gemini cannot see an incoming notification or cannot reply to it, verify that access for the Google app is enabled in Android’s notification-access controls. The exact menu name varies by Android version and manufacturer, so use Settings search for notification access if the path is not obvious.

Notification access is different from ordinary notification permission. A user can allow the Google app to show notifications while still denying the special access needed to read notifications from other apps.
Quick device-setting actions
Google says to set the Google app as the default digital assistant app for certain device controls. In Android Settings, search for default digital assistant app, select the Google app, and confirm the choice. This setting affects assistant-mediated controls; it does not grant screen-automation permission or remove battery limits from scheduled work.
Keep Gemini scheduled actions enabled
Scheduled actions have their own feature-level control. In Gemini, open the profile menu and choose Scheduled actions. From that list you can pause, resume, edit, or delete an action.

Check the action itself
- Open Gemini and tap your profile picture or account menu.
- Open Scheduled actions.
- Find the action that failed.
- Confirm it is enabled rather than paused.
- Review its time, recurrence, and any account or service it relies on.
This list is separate from Android’s battery-optimization screen. An action that is paused in Gemini will not run regardless of whether Android lists the app as unrestricted. Conversely, an enabled action can still be deferred by Android power management or by a device manufacturer’s background policy.
Check Google Home and Assistant routines
Gemini can start some Google Home or Assistant routines by voice or typed command when Google Home is connected. Support is not universal: some routine starters and actions remain unsupported, and availability can depend on the account, language, device, or feature rollout.
Verify the routine path
- Confirm that the Google Home connection and the signed-in account are the ones the routine uses.
- Check that the selected starter is one Gemini supports.
- Check every action in the routine; one unsupported action can prevent the intended result.
- Review Digital Wellbeing Downtime, content filters, and Do Not Disturb schedules.
- Test the routine while the phone is active, then test again while it is locked or idle.
Google Assistant Help states: “Routines are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical use cases.” Do not use a routine as the sole control for anything where a missed start or stop could cause injury, property damage, or a security problem.

Adjust Android battery and background-use settings
Only change Android battery policy after confirming that the Gemini feature is supported and its own permission is correct. Look for the battery or background-use page for the app responsible for the task—often Gemini or the Google app, and sometimes Google Home or the target app.
What to choose
- Avoid Restricted when reliable background work matters. Android may curtail background jobs, alarms, and network activity for an app in this state.
- Use Unrestricted if your device offers it and you accept higher battery consumption. This gives the app more generous execution limits; it still does not guarantee that an automation will run.
- Leave an optimized or system-managed option when battery life is more important than prompt background execution.
There is no universal navigation path because Android manufacturers rename and relocate these controls. Common labels include Battery, App battery usage, Background usage, Battery optimization, and Allow background activity. Open Android Settings, select Apps, choose the relevant app, and search its battery page for the equivalent choices.

Battery exemptions are partial
Android Developers explains that users can configure battery-optimization exemptions, but only partial exemptions exist and other limits can remain. Removing optimization therefore reduces some constraints; it does not create an always-on execution guarantee.

Why idle phones defer automations
Doze mode
When a device sits unused for a period, Android Doze can restrict network and CPU activity. It can defer jobs, synchronization, and standard alarms, then provide maintenance windows in which deferred work can run. A Gemini task that depends on immediate network access may therefore wait until Android permits activity again.
App Standby
App Standby can defer background network activity for apps that have not been used recently. An app can be fully permitted in its own settings and still receive less background time when Android considers it idle.
Standby buckets and execution limits
Android’s limits depend on device state, app state, and the app’s standby bucket. Android Developers gives a conditional example of 10 minutes in a rolling 24-hour period for scheduled jobs of an app in the rare standby bucket (Android Developers, 2026). That figure describes an Android resource scenario, not a Gemini quota or a promise that Gemini will receive ten minutes of execution. Android warns that such values are not guarantees of execution duration and can change in later releases.
Manufacturer-specific restrictions
Exact behavior also depends on the phone manufacturer. On AOSP builds, Android documents that an app in the restricted state cannot run jobs, trigger alarms, or use the network except while it is in the foreground. Manufacturer software can impose additional rules, so two phones running the same Android version may behave differently.
A reliable troubleshooting sequence
- Name the exact behavior. Decide whether it is screen interaction, a scheduled action, notification handling, a quick device control, or a Home routine.
- Confirm support. Check that the feature and the specific starter, target app, or action are supported on your account, language, and device.
- Fix the feature permission. For screen automation, allow the individual target app. For notification work, enable notification access for the Google app. For device controls, select the Google app as the default digital assistant.
- Check Gemini’s schedule list. Make sure the scheduled action is enabled, correctly timed, and not paused or deleted.
- Test while the phone is active. If it fails immediately, the problem is probably support, permission, account state, or the target app—not idle battery policy.
- Test after locking or idling the phone. If it works while active but stalls later, inspect the responsible app’s battery and background-use setting.
- Choose a less restrictive battery mode if justified. Prefer Unrestricted over Restricted when the extra battery use is acceptable, while retaining realistic expectations about Android limits.
- Review routine blockers. For Google Home or Assistant routines, check Digital Wellbeing, filters, Do Not Disturb, and unsupported starters or actions.
- Recheck after updates. Android and Gemini updates can change feature support, resource limits, and the labels or location of settings.
What these settings cannot guarantee
- Continuous execution: Android power management can defer work even when an app is allowed to run in the background.
- Universal feature support: Gemini does not support every routine starter, action, app, or device control.
- Success on a locked screen: Screen automation depends on the target app’s visible state and may be blocked by authentication or security screens.
- Battery-neutral reliability: Less restrictive background settings generally consume more power.
- Identical behavior across phones: Manufacturer policies and Android versions affect scheduling and background execution.
A practical settings checklist
- Identify the automation category before changing Android settings.
- Grant screen automation per target app and choose Always allow only when repeated prompts are the problem.
- Enable the Google app’s notification access for notification reading or replies.
- Set the Google app as the default digital assistant for supported quick device controls.
- Open Gemini’s profile menu → Scheduled actions and confirm the action is enabled.
- For Google Home routines, verify supported starters and actions, then check Digital Wellbeing, filters, and Do Not Disturb.
- When an otherwise supported task fails only during idle time, avoid Restricted and consider Unrestricted for the responsible app.
- Remember that Unrestricted reduces some Android constraints; it never guarantees execution or overrides unsupported features.
Bottom line
Reliable Gemini automation comes from matching each feature to its own control: Gemini’s per-app screen permission, Google app notification access, default-assistant selection, the Scheduled actions list, or Google Home routine settings. Android battery settings are a second-line troubleshooting step for idle-time failures, not a universal Gemini switch. Use Unrestricted only when the additional battery cost is acceptable, and keep all safety-critical tasks outside routines.
