Review three controls first: Accessibility access, requests to enable restricted settings, and any active MediaProjection screen-sharing session. Accessibility access can expose on-screen content and let an app act in other apps; restricted settings can unlock sensitive access; MediaProjection is the live capture session that actually sends your display elsewhere.
If an unexpected caller or message tells you to install an app or change a setting, stop. Verify the organization through a known official channel before approving anything. Android’s labels and menu paths vary by manufacturer, so use Settings search and confirm the device’s Android version.
Why these checks matter
Screen-sharing scams usually depend on persuasion rather than a hidden Android switch. A caller may claim to be from a bank, courier, government office, or technical-support team and direct you to install an app, enable a setting, or approve a sharing prompt. The warning signs are the unsolicited contact and the unexplained change to your device.
Android separates ongoing screen projection from ordinary app permissions. An app cannot silently obtain a MediaProjection session: Android asks you to approve each session. A scammer can, however, keep you on the phone while you approve the prompt. Accessibility access is different: it is a powerful special setting that can let an enabled service read screen content and interact with apps on your behalf.

Use this order when auditing a phone:
- Check enabled Accessibility services and remove access you do not recognize or no longer need.
- Treat any request to enable restricted settings as a high-risk decision, especially for an unfamiliar app.
- Inspect Quick Settings and the status bar for an active screen projection, casting, or recording session.
- When you intentionally share your screen, choose a single app window instead of the whole display when that option is available and sufficient.
- Run Google Play Protect as an additional warning layer, not as a substitute for reviewing access.
1. Audit Accessibility access first
What Accessibility access can do
Google Android Help states that, with access to accessibility settings, an app can read content on your screen and interact with apps on your behalf. That combination is why Accessibility access deserves priority in a scam review: a service may be able to observe information as you enter it and operate controls in other apps.
This is not proof that every accessibility service is malicious. Screen readers, switch access, magnification tools, and other assistive technologies legitimately need elevated capabilities. Judge the service by its purpose, the identity of its developer, the explanation shown before consent, and whether you expected to install it.
How to review it
- Open Settings and search for Accessibility. Searching is more reliable than following a single manufacturer-specific path.
- Open the area for downloaded or installed services. The wording may be “Downloaded apps,” “Installed services,” or a similar label.
- Read the list of services that are on. For each one, identify the app, its developer, and the reason you enabled it.
- Turn off access for an app you do not recognize, an app you no longer use, or a service whose purpose does not match the access it requests.
- If the service supports an accessibility need, confirm that disabling it will not remove essential assistance. Re-enable only the trusted service you actually need.
Do not let a caller guide you through this screen while insisting that access is mandatory. End the call and contact the organization through a telephone number, website, or app you already trust.

- Is screen reading or cross-app interaction central to the app’s stated function?
- Can you identify and trust the developer independently of the message that recommended the app?
- Did the app explain the capability clearly before requesting it?
- Does the app request a narrower Android API that would accomplish the same task?
- Can you stop the service quickly if you no longer need it?
Google Play policy requires sensitive permissions to be necessary for core functionality, requested in context, and limited to user-consented purposes. The Accessibility API policy also bars bypassing Android security or manipulating the interface deceptively. Those rules help you evaluate an app, but an app-store listing or a policy-compliant declaration is not proof that the individual app is safe.
2. Treat restricted-setting requests as a separate warning
What the prompt means
Android can restrict certain settings when an app is installed. Google warns that enabling restricted settings may grant access to sensitive information and recommends doing so only when you trust the developer. Some of Google’s instructions apply to Android 13 and later.

A restricted-setting prompt is therefore a decision point, not a routine installation step. If an unknown app appears to need the setting only because a caller told you to enable it, decline and verify the app through an official source.
How to decide safely
- Pause the installation or setup instead of following a time limit imposed by a caller.
- Read the setting name and the app’s explanation. A vague claim such as “security verification” does not establish a genuine need.
- Check the developer using the organization’s official website or a trusted app store listing that you reached independently.
- Ask whether the app’s core function genuinely requires the access. If the answer is unclear, leave the setting disabled.
- For Android 13 and later, follow the device’s on-screen restricted-settings controls only after you have independently established trust.
Do not assume that a familiar logo, a high download count, or an app-store presence makes the request safe. Those signals do not replace checking the developer and the purpose of the access.

MediaProjection is a live session, not a permanent toggle
MediaProjection is Android’s mechanism for capturing or sharing screen content. Android requires user consent before granting an app a MediaProjection token for a session. This means a scam app cannot legitimately begin screen capture without an approval step, but a scammer may pressure you to tap that approval while pretending it is needed to fix an account.
The permission is not presented as one universal “screen-sharing” switch in Settings. Look for the system indicators that a session is active.
Stop an unexpected projection
- Open Quick Settings and look for the active projection, casting, or recording control.
- Tap the system control to inspect the session and withdraw access if you did not knowingly start it.
- On Android 15 QPR1 and later, use the prominent status-bar chip that appears during projection. Tapping the chip provides a direct stop control for sharing, casting, or recording.
- Locking the screen also stops projection on Android 15 QPR1 and later, according to Android Developers documentation. Use the on-screen stop control first when it is available so you can confirm the session ended.
Android Developers documentation says the operating system displays active MediaProjection tokens in Quick Settings and lets users withdraw a token at any time. If you cannot find the control, search Settings for “cast,” “screen recording,” or “screen sharing,” then check the manufacturer’s support instructions for that model.

Prefer a single app window when sharing intentionally
Android 14, API level 34, introduced a choice between sharing one app window and sharing the whole display. App-window sharing excludes system UI elements such as the status bar, navigation bar, and notifications from the shared output. Select it when the task does not require your entire screen.
Window sharing is a limitation, not a guarantee of privacy. Everything visible inside the selected app—including account numbers, messages, or one-time codes displayed there—can still be transmitted. Switch to whole-display sharing only when the task genuinely requires it, and stop the session as soon as the task ends.
4. A practical review flow for a suspicious call or message
Before installing anything
- End the unexpected call or stop replying to the message. Do not let urgency dictate a permission decision.
- Find the organization’s official website or a telephone number already stored in your records. Do not use a link or number supplied by the unsolicited contact.
- Ask what the app is supposed to do and which access it requires. A request that does not match the app’s core function is a reason to stop.
- Install only from a source you reached independently, and read the developer identity and disclosures before opening the app.
While an app is asking for access
- Decline an Accessibility request unless you knowingly chose a trusted service whose function requires it.
- Decline a restricted-settings request when the app or developer is unfamiliar, the explanation is vague, or a caller is directing the process.
- Do not approve a MediaProjection dialog merely to satisfy a support agent. The dialog grants a live screen-capture session.
- If you need to demonstrate a problem to a trusted person, share only the single app window that contains the relevant information when Android offers that choice.
After you have approved something
- Open Settings, search for Accessibility, and review enabled downloaded services. Turn off access that is not expected or needed.
- Open Quick Settings and inspect the projection indicator. Stop any session you did not knowingly start.
- On Android 15 QPR1 or later, tap the status-bar projection chip for the direct stop action.
- Review the app’s purpose and developer again. If the access cannot be justified, stop using the app and remove it through the normal Android app-management controls.
- Run Google Play Protect and read any warning it presents. Treat a clean result as one signal, not a certification of safety.
5. Android version differences that affect the review

Manufacturers can rename menus, place Accessibility under different categories, or change the Quick Settings layout. The Android version, phone model, and interface build determine the exact path. Settings search is the safest starting point when a menu label does not match these names.
6. Do not confuse ordinary permissions with screen control
Camera, microphone, and contacts permissions can expose sensitive information, but the official Android guidance covered here does not establish that those permissions alone let an app view your entire display remotely. Do not treat every permission as a screen-sharing permission, and do not assume that a universal “remote viewing” list exists on every Android phone.
The relevant distinction is:
- App access: Accessibility access can allow an enabled service to read screen content and interact with other apps.
- Restricted settings: Enabling a restricted setting can unlock sensitive access, so it requires a trusted developer and a genuine functional need.
- Active projection: MediaProjection is a user-approved capture session visible in system UI and revocable from Quick Settings.
This distinction prevents two common mistakes: ignoring a dangerous Accessibility request because it is not shown as a normal runtime permission, and panicking over unrelated permissions while missing an active projection indicator.

7. Use Google Play Protect as a supporting safeguard
Google Play Protect checks apps, warns about potentially harmful apps, and may prevent installation of an unverified app that uses sensitive permissions commonly targeted in financial fraud. Run or review it when you are concerned about an app.
Play Protect is not a substitute for examining Accessibility access, restricted-setting requests, or an active projection session. A warning layer can miss a new or deceptive app, while a clean scan does not explain why an app needs powerful access. Treat the service as an additional signal in the decision, not as permission to approve an unexpected request.
8. A decision framework for legitimate remote-support and accessibility tools
Use these five tests before granting elevated access:
- Core function: Does the stated purpose genuinely require reading the screen, interacting with other apps, or projecting a display?
- Developer identity: Can you verify who made the app through an official channel that you found independently?
- Specific consent: Does the app explain the access in clear, task-specific language before Android asks for approval?
- Scope: Can you share one app window instead of the full display, or use a narrower API instead of Accessibility access?
- Stop control: Can you quickly disable the service or end the projection from Android’s own controls?
An app that fails any one of these tests deserves a pause. An unfamiliar app is not made safe merely by appearing in an app store, and a familiar app is not automatically entitled to every sensitive setting.
9. Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming every Accessibility service is malicious
Legitimate assistive technologies rely on this access. Review identity, purpose, disclosure, and trust instead of disabling services blindly and potentially removing needed support.

Expecting one universal menu path
Android manufacturers and versions use different labels and layouts. Search Settings for Accessibility, cast, screen recording, or screen sharing, then confirm the result on your device.
Believing projection can start silently
Android requires consent for each MediaProjection session. The scam risk is the social pressure to approve the prompt, not a hidden ability to bypass it.
Choosing whole-display sharing by habit
On Android 14 and later, app-window sharing can keep system UI elements out of the shared output. It still exposes everything visible in the chosen app, so limit the app’s own content before sharing.

Treating Play Protect as a guarantee
Play Protect can warn or block some harmful installations, but it cannot replace checking who requested the access, why it is needed, and whether a session is active.
