The fastest-feeling Android home screen is usually the one that makes your next action obvious. Remove shortcuts you never tap, delete empty pages, group related apps only when folders improve recognition, keep a small set of useful widgets, and choose a grid and suggestion style that match how you work. These changes can make apps faster to find and open; the available official guidance does not establish that decluttering increases your phone’s processing speed.
Android menus differ by manufacturer, Android version, and launcher. The exact Pixel paths below are examples, while the general principles work on most launchers.
What “cleaner and faster” means on Android
A home screen can hold app icons, shortcuts, widgets, folders, and several pages. “Cleaner” means reducing visual competition so the items you actually need stand out. “Faster” means fewer swipes, less scanning, and more predictable taps—not a guaranteed increase in CPU, memory, or battery performance.

Identify your launcher and its settings first
There is no universal Android launcher menu. A phone maker may rename “Home settings,” move grid controls, or omit a feature entirely. Third-party launchers can use completely different gestures and terminology.
- Press and hold an empty area of the home screen.
- Look for Home settings, Launcher settings, Settings, or a gear icon.
- Write down your Android version and launcher name before changing several options; this makes it easier to reverse a change.
- If the long-press menu does not appear, open the phone’s main Settings app and search for home app, default apps, or launcher.
Android uses one active launcher at a time. For example, Microsoft’s documentation describes a separate Launcher Settings area and device-specific behavior for its launcher; other launchers have their own equivalents. Do not assume that a gesture or setting shown in one launcher exists in yours.
1. Curate the first home-screen page
The first page should answer the question, “What do I need immediately?” Keep only apps and shortcuts you open often, plus any widget that earns its space. Move rarely used items to the app drawer rather than leaving a wall of icons in view.
Remove a shortcut without deleting the app
- Press and hold the icon or shortcut.
- Drag it to Remove or tap Remove from Home, depending on the launcher.
- Open the app drawer when you need the app later, or add a shortcut back from the drawer.
Remove changes only the home-screen shortcut. Uninstall removes the app from the device and may delete its local data. Choose Uninstall only when you no longer want the app installed. This distinction is documented in Google’s general Android guidance.
Use a simple keep-or-move test
- Keep: an app used most days, a one-tap action such as a camera shortcut, or information you check repeatedly.
- Move to the drawer: occasional travel, shopping, banking, or administration apps.
- Remove duplicates: two shortcuts that open the same destination or two copies of a browser, settings page, or contact.
- Reconsider decorative shortcuts: an icon that looks attractive but does not save a tap is consuming attention and space.
2. Delete unused pages and organize the rest
Multiple pages are useful when each has a purpose—for example, communication, work, or travel. They slow you down when they are mostly empty or contain forgotten icons. Move their contents elsewhere, then remove the redundant page. Android Help notes that a page disappears once its apps, shortcuts, widgets, and groups have been moved away.
Make pages task-based
- Page one: everyday communication, camera, maps, calendar, and a small number of favorites.
- Page two: work or study tools that you use in a particular context.
- Optional page: a focused widget page, only if you check those widgets frequently.
Do not create a page for a single rarely used icon. Put that icon in the drawer or a clearly named folder instead. Fewer pages reduce swiping and make the home button or home gesture return you to a predictable starting point.

Create folders only when they improve recognition
- Press and hold one app icon.
- Drag it on top of another related icon.
- Open the new folder and rename it with a plain label such as Travel, Finance, or Work.
- Add only apps that belong to the same task; remove the folder if opening it requires more searching than the separate icons did.
Folders reduce visible clutter, but they add an extra tap. Keep the handful of apps you use constantly outside folders and reserve folders for groups that are easy to recognize.
3. Adjust the icon grid for your eyes and fingers
A denser grid fits more shortcuts on one page and can reduce page changes. A larger, more open grid makes icons and touch targets easier to identify and tap. There is no universally fastest setting: the right choice depends on screen size, eyesight, hand position, and how many apps you deliberately keep visible.
Pixel path: change icon size and layout
- Press and hold an empty area of the home screen.
- Tap Wallpaper & style.
- Swipe to the home-screen preview.
- Tap Layout.
- Select the icon-size or grid option you can scan comfortably, then tap Apply.
This is a Pixel-specific route documented by Google Pixel Help. On another phone, look for Grid, Home screen layout, Icon size, or a similarly named control in Home settings.
Choose density using a practical test
- Set a denser layout if you regularly swipe to another page just to reach an app and can still distinguish icons quickly.
- Set a larger layout if you mis-tap, rely on text labels, or need more space around widgets.
- After applying a change, try opening five frequently used apps without pausing. If you scan longer or make more mistakes, revert to the previous grid.
Some launchers also offer icon-label, pack, or shape controls. Their names and availability are launcher-dependent; do not hide labels solely for appearance if labels help you recognize unfamiliar icons.
4. Decide whether app suggestions help or distract
Suggested apps can surface recently or frequently used apps and routines, reducing manual searching. They can also change position as your habits change, which is frustrating if you prefer a stable row of favorites.

Pixel suggestion controls
On Pixel phones, open Home settings from a long press on an empty area, then review the options for suggestions in the app list and on the home screen. Google describes suggestions based on recent and most-used apps and provides controls to turn those suggestion areas on or off.

If you want a fixed favorites row, turn off the relevant suggestions before adding apps manually. Google’s Pixel guidance states that manual additions require suggestions to be disabled. The labels can vary by Pixel software release, so read the explanatory text beside each switch.
Pick a suggestion strategy

5. Keep only widgets that save a step
A widget earns its space when it gives useful information without opening an app or provides a direct action you perform often. Examples include a calendar agenda, weather you actually monitor, a task list, media controls, or a contact action.
Add or remove a widget
- Press and hold an empty area of the home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Press and hold a widget, then drag it to an open area.
- To remove it, press and hold the widget and choose Remove.
Removing a widget does not uninstall its app. It only removes that home-screen view.
Resize when the launcher and widget support it
Press and hold the widget. If resize handles appear, drag them to show the amount of information you need. Android Developers explains that widget resizing changes how much content can appear and how the widget fits the layout; Android Help notes that only resizable widgets expose those handles.
- Use a wider calendar or task widget when seeing several entries prevents repeated app launches.
- Make a weather or clock widget smaller if it is mostly decorative.
- Leave a clear row or column for the apps you tap most; a large widget that pushes those apps to another page can make access slower.
Widget behavior can differ by app, launcher, and Android version. If no handles appear, the widget is not resizable in that configuration.
6. Tune information density without losing discoverability
Cleaner does not always mean fewer visible pixels. A nearly blank screen can force you into the drawer, while a dense screen can make every icon compete for attention. Compare each change on four axes:

- Visual simplicity: fewer icons, folders, pages, and widgets.
- Access speed: fixed favorites versus dynamic suggestions.
- Information density: a larger widget with more content versus a smaller widget that leaves room for shortcuts.
- Discoverability: whether you can identify an icon immediately without reading a label or opening a folder.
Change one category at a time, use the home screen normally for a day, and keep the arrangement that reduces hesitation. A setting that looks minimal in a screenshot may be slower for you if it hides labels, relies on memory, or adds an extra folder tap.

Before installing a different launcher or changing the default, check what your current launcher already supports. Long-press an empty area and inspect Home settings first. Back up or note your arrangement if the launcher offers a backup option, because switching launchers can change widget placement, icon positions, and gesture behavior.
If you install a third-party launcher, Android may ask you to select it as the default home app. You can change that choice later in the system’s default-app settings. Keep in mind that device makers may restrict certain gestures, notification dots, or widget behaviors; a feature documented by one launcher is not a promise for another.

Use this sequence so you can tell which adjustment helped:
- Remove unused shortcuts, taking care to choose Remove rather than Uninstall.
- Move remaining icons into purposeful pages or folders and eliminate empty pages.
- Choose a grid density that balances scanning with comfortable tapping.
- Decide whether dynamic suggestions or a fixed favorites row better matches your habits.
- Remove widgets that do not save a step, then resize the useful ones if handles are available.
- Test the arrangement with your most common tasks before making cosmetic changes.
Common problems and fixes
“I removed an app and now I cannot find it.”
You likely removed the shortcut, not the app. Open the app drawer, search for the app, and drag it back to the home screen if needed. If you selected Uninstall, reinstalling may be necessary.

The feature may not be supported, may use another name, or may be controlled by the phone maker. Search Home settings and the system Settings app for layout, grid, suggestions, or default home app. Do not assume a missing option indicates a fault.

“A widget will not resize.”
Press and hold it and look for handles. If none appear, the widget or launcher does not support resizing there. Remove it, choose a different size offered by the widget picker, or replace it with a smaller widget.
“Suggestions keep replacing the apps I want.”
Open Home settings and disable suggestions for the location where they appear, then add your preferred apps manually. If you keep suggestions enabled, place frequently used fixed shortcuts elsewhere so changing recommendations do not disrupt your main workflow.
“The new layout looks clean but feels slower.”
Increase icon size, restore labels if your launcher permits it, move high-use apps out of folders, or reduce widget size. Optimize for recognition and tap accuracy, not the lowest possible icon count.
Android-version and manufacturer limits
Google’s general Android instructions note that some home-screen steps work only on Android 14 and later. Other features depend on the launcher and device software. Treat Pixel paths as a concrete example rather than a universal menu map, and read the labels on your own phone before applying a change.
A practical end state
A well-tuned home screen usually has one purposeful first page, no abandoned pages, a few directly reachable favorites, folders only for recognizable groups, and widgets that provide information or an action you genuinely use. The arrangement should let you identify and open common apps with minimal searching while leaving the rest safely available in the drawer.
