Start by finding the cause rather than disabling every background feature. Open your phone’s Battery usage screen, identify the apps or system functions consuming the most power, then adjust only the relevant settings. In most cases, the useful changes are to keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled, reduce display demand, limit unusually heavy background use, and reserve Battery Saver for low-charge situations.
Android settings differ by manufacturer, model and version. The paths below are Google’s general Android guidance or Pixel-specific instructions; if the labels on your phone differ, use the equivalent battery, app, display and location controls supplied by your manufacturer.
1. Check Battery usage before changing anything
A battery percentage tells you that charge is disappearing, not why. The Battery usage screen separates app and system activity so you can match a setting to an actual source of drain. An app that appears high because you used it continuously may be normal; an app with substantial background use despite little interaction is a better candidate for restriction.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery usage.
- Review the list of apps and system entries using power.
- Select an app to inspect its usage details and the Allow background usage control.
Pixel guidance generally uses Optimized for app battery use. Some system entries cannot be changed, and available controls differ by app. Treat the list as a diagnostic: change a setting when it addresses a conspicuous background, display or connectivity drain, then check the usage screen again during ordinary use.

2. Leave Adaptive Battery and optimization enabled
On supported phones, Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use and manages their activity over time. Google’s Pixel guidance says to keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on for best results. After a new Pixel setup or a factory reset, the learning process may take a few weeks, so a recently reset phone may not have settled into its normal pattern yet.
Adaptive management can reduce an app’s background work, which may mean delayed notifications or less immediate background processing. That trade-off is usually preferable to turning optimization off globally. If a time-sensitive app behaves incorrectly, adjust that app individually rather than disabling adaptive controls for the whole phone.
What to check
- Look for an Adaptive Battery switch under your phone’s battery settings and leave it on when available.
- Use the app’s battery setting of Optimized unless you have a specific reason to permit unrestricted background activity.
- Give a newly configured or reset phone time to learn your routine before judging its long-term battery behavior.
3. Restrict only apps with excessive background use
If Battery usage shows an app consuming power while you are barely using it, open that app’s battery controls and review background access. On Pixel, the relevant screen includes Allow background usage. The exact choices and wording vary by Android version and manufacturer.
When restriction is appropriate
- An app repeatedly appears high in battery usage despite little foreground use.
- You do not need immediate notifications, location updates or synchronization from that app.
- The app performs optional background work that can wait until you open it.
What Restricted means in practice
Putting an app in a restricted state can stop or reduce background activity. The app may not work as usual, and notifications or other background events may be delayed. Messaging, navigation, authentication and work apps can be especially sensitive, so test the app’s essential function after changing it. If the behavior is unacceptable, return the app to Optimized rather than applying a blanket restriction to many apps.

Do not force a change on system entries that provide no editable control. Android may protect those components because other phone functions depend on them.
4. Reduce screen brightness and screen-on time
The display is often active during the exact periods when the phone is consuming the most energy. Lowering brightness and allowing the screen to turn off sooner reduce that demand without changing how apps synchronize in the background.
Brightness
Use the brightness slider in Quick Settings or the display section of Settings. Choose the lowest level that remains comfortable and readable in the current lighting. Automatic or adaptive brightness can be convenient, but the available control and name depend on the phone.

Shorten the screen timeout so an unattended display turns off earlier. Look under Settings > Display for a control such as Screen timeout or Screen sleep. A timeout that is too short can interrupt reading or navigation, so choose a value that fits how you use the phone.

Dark theme
Android’s battery guidance also lists Dark theme as an option. It can reduce demand on some displays, but the sources do not establish a universal percentage saving. Use it if you prefer the appearance or find it comfortable at night; do not rely on a promised fixed gain.
5. Use Battery Saver as a situational mode
Battery Saver is designed to stretch a low charge, not necessarily to remain enabled all day. The general Android path is Settings > Battery > Battery Saver, although the menu and available options vary by phone.
When enabled, Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity. Google notes that some effects, features, network connections and apps may be delayed or affected. A mail sync, notification, upload or location-dependent task may therefore arrive later than usual.
When to turn it on
- Enable it when you need the remaining charge to last through a period without reliable charging.
- Use the phone’s automatic Battery Saver threshold or schedule if your model provides one and the resulting behavior suits you.
- Turn it off when you need timely background work, dependable synchronization or normal app responsiveness.
Battery Saver is a broad compromise. If one app is responsible for the drain, changing that app’s background setting is less disruptive than limiting the entire phone.

6. Reduce heavy connectivity and location activity
Some activities keep radios, processors or sensors busy for long periods. Google lists hotspot and tethering, prolonged GPS use, streaming, and calls while moving as activities that can contribute to faster drain.
Hotspot and tethering
Turn off a hotspot when no device needs it. Tethering can keep the mobile radio and Wi-Fi transmitter active continuously, so leaving it enabled after a trip or work session wastes charge.
Location and GPS
Long navigation sessions and other continuous GPS use can be demanding. Stop navigation or location tracking when the task is complete. Turning off Location entirely can prevent some apps and phone features from working, so use that switch only when the loss of location services is acceptable.
Mobile data, Wi-Fi and streaming
Where practical, use a reliable Wi-Fi connection instead of mobile data. Streaming video or audio for long periods remains a significant workload regardless of the network, so download or pause media when preserving charge matters. Calls while moving can also require more radio work as the phone changes connections.

7. Manage heat before chasing obscure settings
Heat is both a symptom and a cause of rapid drain. Google’s Android guidance states: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Heat-related drain can also damage the battery.
- Move a hot phone out of direct sun and stop demanding tasks until it cools.
- End navigation, hotspot use, streaming or other intensive activity that is no longer needed.
- Do not leave the phone in a hot vehicle or under materials that trap heat.
If the phone is hot while idle, inspect Battery usage for a background app or active connection instead of assuming the battery itself is defective.
8. Account for temporary drain after an update
After a software update, a Pixel can use somewhat more battery while the new software is downloaded and optimized. That temporary increase does not by itself prove a lasting battery problem. If unusual drain continues after a few days, follow the device-specific support guidance for your manufacturer and model.

A practical order of operations
- Open Battery usage and identify the largest app or system contributors.
- Check whether the apparent drain is explained by heavy foreground use, such as streaming or navigation, rather than background activity.
- For an unexpectedly high app, inspect background usage and use Optimized unless a targeted restriction is justified.
- Confirm that Adaptive Battery and battery optimization remain enabled where supported.
- Lower brightness and shorten screen timeout if the display is a major part of your use.
- Stop unneeded hotspot, GPS, streaming or mobile-data activity.
- Use Battery Saver when preserving a low remaining charge matters more than immediate background behavior.
- If the phone is hot, cool it and investigate the active workload before changing additional settings.
What not to expect from these changes
There is no setting-specific savings percentage established for brightness, timeout, Dark theme, Adaptive Battery or app restrictions in the cited guidance. Results depend on the phone, display, signal conditions, apps and your pattern of use. The useful objective is not a guaranteed number; it is removing the activity that your own Battery usage screen shows to be unnecessary.
