On a Nothing phone with Nothing OS 5.0, start by installing the update for your exact model, then review the new Notifications and Quick Settings layout, privacy indicators and app permissions, lock-screen notification previews, backup, Find My Device and Battery Saver access. Nothing describes these changes as its Android 17 experience, but availability is phased by device, region and carrier.
Use the stable release unless you specifically need an early feature and accept beta software’s stability and data-loss risks.
1. Check whether your exact phone has Nothing OS 5.0
Do not assume that an Android 17 announcement means the update is ready for every Nothing phone. Nothing publishes indicative release windows, and the rollout is phased by model, region and carrier. Its official Nothing OS 5.0 page lists Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 as having reached the end of major software support; those models will not receive Nothing OS 5.0.

- Open Settings > System > System updates.
- Tap Check for update if the page does not check automatically.
- Read the model and build information before downloading. Install only the package offered for that phone.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and charge the battery to at least 50%, as recommended in Nothing’s update instructions.
- Install the update and allow the phone to restart. Leave extra time for post-update app optimization.
Nothing’s support pages note that labels can change between software versions and locales. If an item has a slightly different name, use the Settings search field for “system update,” “notifications,” “lock screen,” or “backup.”
2. Decide whether to stay on stable software or join the beta
The stable release is the sensible starting point for a primary phone. The Open Beta can expose features earlier, but Nothing warns that pre-release software can affect stability, battery life and performance.

If you join, install the latest stable build first, use the current Nothing Beta Hub (version 2.0 is specified on the product page), and check the live requirements for your model at Nothing’s OS 5.0 page. Do not enroll solely because a projected release month has passed: regional and carrier phasing can still delay eligibility.

3. Learn the new Notifications and Quick Settings arrangement
Nothing says its Android 17 experience gives Notifications and Quick Settings separate dedicated spaces. That changes the first swipe you use every day: one area is for reading and managing alerts, while the other is for controls such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, brightness and Battery Saver.
Use the two areas deliberately
- Open the notifications area when you want to read, dismiss or snooze alerts without hunting through control tiles.
- Open Quick Settings when you need a switch or slider quickly.
- After the update, expand Quick Settings and tap the edit control to place frequently used tiles near the top. Hidden tiles remain available in the editor.
The exact swipe behavior and edit layout can differ by model and build. Spend a minute after installation learning which edge or gesture opens each panel, then move only the controls you actually use. This prevents the common post-update mistake of treating the separated panels like the old combined shade.
4. Review privacy indicators and app permissions
Nothing describes updated privacy indicators and permission controls that make camera, microphone and location access easier to understand. This is the first privacy review worth doing after the update because old permissions may no longer match how you use an app.

Audit high-impact permissions
- Open Settings > Privacy > Permission manager, or use the equivalent Permissions page if your build uses different wording.
- Check Camera, Microphone and Location one at a time.
- For each app, ask whether the access is needed for its main function. Change access only when you understand the effect on that app.
- When an indicator appears while you are not expecting recording or location use, open the notification or privacy panel to identify the app before changing permissions.
Do not deny every permission automatically. A navigation app needs location for turn-by-turn directions, while a voice recorder needs microphone access. The useful change is visibility: you can make a deliberate decision instead of leaving an old grant unexamined.

Notification previews can expose message text, one-time codes, calendar details or work information to anyone who can see the display. Nothing’s support guidance places the relevant controls at Settings > Lock screen > Privacy.
Choose the preview level that fits your environment
- Keep detailed previews if the phone stays private and you need to act on messages immediately.
- Hide sensitive content while still showing that an alert arrived if the phone is visible on a desk, shared at home or used around customers.
- Hide lock-screen notifications entirely when even the existence of an alert is confidential.
After changing the option, send yourself a test message and lock the phone. Check the result from the angle at which other people normally see it; a setting that looks private straight on can still reveal text in a notification banner or on an always-on display.
6. Turn on recovery and backup safeguards
Two settings are more valuable before a problem than after one: device finding and a current cloud backup.

Enable Find My Device
Go to Settings > Google > Find My Device and confirm that the service is enabled for the Google account on the phone. This gives you a way to locate, secure or manage the device if it is misplaced, subject to the service’s connectivity and account requirements.

For a manual backup, open Settings > Google > Backup > Back up now. Wait for the operation to finish before experimenting with beta software, changing major settings or performing a reset. A backup is not a guarantee that every app can restore every local file; verify especially important photos, authenticator recovery codes and documents using the apps or services that store them.

- Open and fully expand Quick Settings.
- Tap the edit button.
- Find Battery Saver in the hidden tiles.
- Drag it into the active tile area and save the layout.
- Tap the tile whenever you need to reduce background activity and extend remaining battery life.
Because Android 17 separates Notifications and Quick Settings, placing Battery Saver in the first few control tiles is more useful than leaving it buried. If you rarely run low, leave the tile hidden and avoid changing battery behavior that your apps depend on.
8. Check the other Nothing OS 5.0 changes after the essentials
Once the update, privacy and recovery basics are settled, explore the features Nothing lists for Nothing OS 5.0:
- Quick Share: a faster way to send compatible content to nearby devices.
- Improved screen recording: review the recorder controls before you need to capture a support problem or demonstration.
- Expanded Dark Theme: check which apps and system surfaces now follow the darker appearance; individual apps can still override system behavior.
- Independent Assistant volume: adjust Assistant speech separately from other media when the controls are exposed on your build.
- Redesigned Recents: learn where app switching, screenshots and split-screen actions moved before multitasking under pressure.
These are feature descriptions from Nothing, not quantified performance claims. No published battery, speed or adoption percentage establishes how much faster or more efficient a particular phone will be.
9. What to do when the update or a setting is missing
The update does not appear
- Confirm the phone model and current build in the System settings page.
- Check Nothing’s live OS 5.0 page for the model’s status; indicative dates are not guarantees.
- Remember that region and carrier staging can postpone the download even when another owner has it.
- Use Wi-Fi and charge above 50% before trying again.
A beta enrollment option is unavailable
Beta access requires the listed stable build, an eligible model and a currently open enrollment path. Install the required stable build first and use the latest Beta Hub version. If the model is not listed, do not sideload a package intended for another phone.
A menu name does not match
Nothing’s support documentation covers several software generations, so labels can shift. Search Settings for the function rather than guessing: “lock screen privacy,” “Find My Device,” “Back up now,” “Battery Saver” and “Permission manager” should lead to the corresponding page on most builds.
