Choose AmneziaWG when your network detects or blocks ordinary VPN traffic; choose WireGuard when the network is permissive and you want a simple, efficient connection; choose OpenVPN when TCP/UDP transport and detailed configuration matter more than minimal overhead. Amnezia describes these trade-offs in its documentation, but there is no independent benchmark proving one protocol is always fastest or that any protocol works on every blocked network.
The short decision
| Your situation | Best starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional VPN traffic is detected, throttled or blocked | AmneziaWG | Amnezia adds traffic-obfuscation mechanisms intended to make WireGuard traffic harder for deep-packet inspection (DPI) systems to identify. |
| Your network permits VPNs and you want a straightforward default | WireGuard | It has a small configuration surface, uses UDP and is designed for low overhead and efficient operation. |
| You need TCP or UDP, more port choices or extensive options | OpenVPN | Amnezia exposes transport, port, cipher, hashing, TLS-authentication and DNS-leak-prevention settings. |
| You are unsure | Try WireGuard first, then AmneziaWG if recognition or blocking appears | This gives you a simple baseline without assuming that obfuscation is necessary on every network. |
These are starting choices, not universal performance guarantees. The final result depends on the server, client, operating system, route to the server, packet loss and the filtering policy on the network you are using.
What is different about the three protocols?
AmneziaWG: WireGuard cryptography with a masking layer
Amnezia describes AmneziaWG as a fork of WireGuard-Go. Its version 3.1 documentation identifies the same core cryptographic foundation: the Noise_IK protocol, Curve25519 and AEAD ChaCha20-Poly1305. AmneziaWG therefore should not be described as a new encryption algorithm. Its key change is at the transport and traffic-characteristic layer.

The masking mechanisms alter characteristics that a DPI appliance can inspect, including packet headers, packet sizes, timing and traffic patterns. Amnezia says the goal is to make identification more difficult while retaining WireGuard’s low-overhead design. The documentation describes resistance to recognition, not invisibility and not a guarantee that a particular censoring system will allow the connection. See the technical overview at AmneziaWG documentation.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Amnezia documents the feature history in stages:
- Version 1.5 added transport-layer obfuscation and the ability to imitate common UDP protocols.
- Version 2.0 added dynamic headers and additional packet variation.
- Version 3.1 added more variation in connection behavior, including sizes, sequences and timing.
Those details matter for compatibility: the client and server must use settings and versions that work together. AmneziaWG is a UDP protocol and normally presents fewer controls than OpenVPN. In the Amnezia client, masking parameters include Magic headers and junk-packet sizes. Changing them casually can stop a profile from connecting if the server expects matching values.
WireGuard: the simple, efficient baseline
WireGuard uses UDP and is intentionally small and straightforward to configure. Amnezia describes it as using little mobile power, producing lower latency and higher throughput than OpenVPN in its product overview. Those are vendor-described characteristics, not an independent test result for every phone, router, server or internet provider.
The same overview warns that ordinary WireGuard traffic is readily recognizable by DPI and can be blocked. On a normal home, office or public network that permits VPN traffic, this visibility may not matter. On a filtered network, it is the reason to consider AmneziaWG instead.

OpenVPN is the most configurable of these choices in Amnezia’s interface. You can use TCP or UDP and, depending on the profile and server, adjust the subnet, network protocol, port, cipher, hashing algorithm, TLS-authentication settings and whether DNS requests outside the VPN are blocked. Amnezia calls it time-tested and highly configurable.

That flexibility can solve a specific compatibility problem, such as a network where UDP fails but TCP on an allowed port works, or a client workflow that already depends on an .ovpn file. The trade-off is more overhead and ordinary OpenVPN traffic can also be recognized by DPI. Amnezia describes mobile power use as normal rather than especially low.
AmneziaWG, WireGuard and OpenVPN compared
| Criterion | AmneziaWG | WireGuard | OpenVPN |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary transport | UDP | UDP | TCP or UDP |
| Traffic recognition | Designed to make DPI recognition harder through traffic masking | Amnezia says it is readily recognizable by DPI | Amnezia says it can be recognized by DPI |
| Cryptographic basis | WireGuard foundation: Noise_IK, Curve25519 and AEAD ChaCha20-Poly1305, with transport obfuscation | WireGuard cryptography | OpenVPN’s configured cryptographic and TLS settings |
| Configuration style | Few settings; masking values such as Magic headers and junk-packet sizes | Minimal settings | Subnet, transport, port, cipher, hash, TLS-auth and DNS controls are available in documented workflows |
| Performance expectation | Amnezia presents it as retaining WireGuard’s performance characteristics | Amnezia presents it as low-latency, high-throughput and power-efficient | Amnezia presents it as more resource-intensive than WireGuard |
| Best fit | Restrictive or heavily filtered networks | Permissive networks and simple deployments | Deployments needing transport or configuration flexibility |
For the vendor’s full protocol descriptions, see Amnezia’s protocol overview. The documentation does not provide independent, controlled speed figures, so the performance row should be read as an expectation rather than a measured ranking.
Which protocol is best for censorship or VPN blocking?
Start with AmneziaWG if your connection is in a country, workplace, school or public hotspot where conventional VPN traffic is detected or blocked. Amnezia specifically recommends it for that high-censorship use case and says that unmasked WireGuard and OpenVPN may expose a VPS address to blocking.
“Recommended” does not mean guaranteed. A filtering system can block the server’s IP address, identify unusual UDP behavior, restrict all non-approved traffic or change its detection rules. Amnezia’s wording describes an intended resistance to DPI recognition; it does not establish that AmneziaWG bypasses every national firewall or captive network.

If AmneziaWG connects but is unstable, test a different server location and verify that the profile’s masking parameters match the server. If the network blocks UDP generally, AmneziaWG and WireGuard may both fail because both use UDP. OpenVPN over TCP may be worth testing when the server and profile support it, although ordinary OpenVPN traffic can still be recognized.
Is AmneziaWG faster than WireGuard?
There is no evidence here for a universal winner. Amnezia describes AmneziaWG as high-performance and as retaining WireGuard’s efficiency, while WireGuard is described as having low latency, high throughput and low mobile power use. Obfuscation can add packet processing and traffic overhead, but the practical effect depends on the masking settings, device and network.
Measure the connection you actually use instead of relying on a generic ranking. Run the same test from the same device, server and location after connecting with each protocol. Compare download and upload throughput, latency, packet loss, reconnection behavior and battery use over several minutes. A protocol that produces a slightly lower peak speed but remains connected may be more useful than a faster protocol that is blocked or repeatedly drops.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- TCP is required: Some networks handle UDP poorly or permit only traffic that resembles a TCP connection. OpenVPN can use TCP where the server profile supports it.
- You need port flexibility: Amnezia’s setup workflow exposes the network protocol and port, which can help when a particular port is filtered.
- You need profile-level cryptographic controls: OpenVPN profiles can expose cipher, hashing and TLS-authentication settings.
- You need a standard client workflow: The native OpenVPN configuration format is
.ovpn, which can be imported into compatible applications. - You need DNS-leak controls: Amnezia documents an option to block DNS requests outside the VPN.
Do not choose OpenVPN merely because it has more switches. Every additional setting is another possible mismatch between the client, server and imported profile. If your network permits WireGuard and you have no OpenVPN-specific requirement, WireGuard is usually the simpler configuration.
How to choose in AmneziaVPN
- Classify the network. Ask whether ordinary VPN traffic is already blocked, whether UDP works for other applications and whether you are behind a captive portal, company firewall or national filtering system.
- Choose the least complicated protocol that meets the need. Use WireGuard on a permissive network, AmneziaWG when recognition or blocking is the problem, and OpenVPN when TCP or detailed profile options are important.
- Use the protocol selector in the Amnezia client. Amnezia’s installation and configuration guide documents protocol-specific settings for AmneziaWG, WireGuard and OpenVPN. Select the protocol supported by the server profile rather than changing values at random. See the installation and configuration instructions.
- Keep matching values together. For AmneziaWG, Magic headers and junk-packet sizes are part of the masking configuration. For OpenVPN, transport, port, cipher, hash and TLS-authentication values must agree with the server. A mismatch commonly appears as a failed handshake or an immediate disconnect.
- Test basic operation before tuning. Confirm that websites load, DNS resolves through the intended tunnel and the connection survives a few minutes of idle and active traffic. Change one setting at a time so you know which change helped or caused the failure.
- Export only to a compatible application. Amnezia documents native AmneziaWG workflows and alternative applications for WireGuard and OpenVPN. WireGuard configurations use
.conf; OpenVPN configurations use.ovpn. Check the target app and configuration version before importing. The relevant guidance is at Amnezia’s alternative-client guide and supported configuration formats.
What if a protocol is missing from the selector?
Amnezia says a profile can be connect-only, restricting which protocols appear in the application. In that case, the absence of AmneziaWG, WireGuard or OpenVPN does not prove that the client lacks support. Ask the profile owner for a configuration that includes the desired protocol, or use a server you control with the required protocol enabled. Amnezia documents this situation and the protocol-change workflow at change protocol.
Also check that the app is current enough for the configuration version you received. A profile generated for a newer AmneziaWG feature may not import correctly into an older client, and a third-party client may support WireGuard or OpenVPN but not AmneziaWG’s masking parameters.
Using AmneziaWG on an OpenWrt router
Router deployment requires a separate compatibility check. Amnezia provides an OpenWrt installation path for AmneziaWG 3.1, but directs users to verify the supported build list and exact router model. Do not assume that every OpenWrt device has the required package, CPU capacity or firmware support.
Best Value
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Before changing router firmware, verify the model revision, OpenWrt release, available storage and whether the required AmneziaWG package is listed for that build. Keep a recovery path and a copy of the original configuration. The official procedure is at AmneziaWG on OpenWrt.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The connection never establishes
- Confirm that the server profile actually supports the selected protocol.
- Check whether the network blocks UDP; this affects both AmneziaWG and WireGuard.
- For OpenVPN, try the other supported transport only if the profile provides it.
- Re-import the profile instead of manually copying individual values.
It connects but websites do not load
- Check DNS handling and enable the documented option to block DNS requests outside the VPN when appropriate.
- Verify that the server’s subnet and routing values match the profile.
- Test a different website and then test a known IP address to distinguish DNS failure from general routing failure.
The connection works at home but not on a restricted network
- Switch from ordinary WireGuard or OpenVPN to AmneziaWG if the server supports it.
- Confirm that the AmneziaWG masking values are the server’s values; arbitrary changes can break the handshake.
- Try a different server address if the current VPS IP appears to be blocked.
AmneziaWG is unavailable in another app
Use the Amnezia native workflow or follow the documented AmneziaWG alternative-client procedure. A standard WireGuard application cannot automatically understand every AmneziaWG-specific masking option simply because both protocols share a cryptographic foundation.
Bottom line
Use AmneziaWG first for a network that detects or blocks conventional VPN traffic. Use WireGuard for the simplest efficient connection where VPN traffic is allowed. Use OpenVPN when TCP/UDP selection, port control, detailed cryptographic settings or an established .ovpn workflow outweigh minimal overhead. Treat those choices as informed starting points: actual speed, stability and reachability must be verified on your own device and network.
