Start with the settings that match how you use the tablet: review privacy controls, set a screen timeout that suits your routine, and decide whether automatic storage cleanup is right for you. Then adjust recommendations, profile protections, or accessibility options as needed. Exact menu names vary by Fire Tablet model, Fire OS version, and active profile, so check those before following a path; Amazon’s help pages may not match every device.
Before changing settings, check your model, software, and profile
On a Fire Tablet, a setting may be per device, per profile, or available only on certain models or Fire OS versions. Several of the paths below are documented by Amazon but may look different on your tablet. If a listed privacy menu is missing, search Settings for “Security & Privacy” or “Apps & Games.”
Use the sections that fit your priorities rather than changing everything at once. For example, a shorter screen timeout can be useful for battery life but inconvenient when reading hands-free, while fewer personalized ads may mean less tailored advertising.

Amazon documents separate controls for device usage data, app usage data, interest-based ads, and location-based services. These are not one master switch, and some settings apply separately to each profile.

- Device usage data: Amazon says opting out affects use of that data for marketing and product improvement. It does not stop all processing: Amazon says some data continues to support device features, and the switch does not affect all data associated with Amazon services or all advertising processing. Amazon’s Fire Tablet privacy FAQ describes the scope.
- App usage data: This is a separate choice from device usage data.
- Interest-based ads: The Advertising ID setting is separate from the other usage-data options.
- Location: Location-based services can be turned off for the device or for individual apps.
Amazon lists these routes: Settings > Security & Privacy > Device Usage Data; Settings > Apps & Games > Collect App Usage Data; Settings > Apps & Games > Advertising ID > Interest-based Ads; and Settings > Wireless > Location-Based Services. Labels can vary, so use Settings search if a route is absent. Amazon says these controls are device-specific and users with multiple profiles should set them for each profile. Some tablets also allow privacy settings to be managed from the Amazon account.
Set the screen timeout for how you use the tablet
A shorter idle timeout can reduce the time the display stays on when you walk away, which may help conserve battery. It can also interrupt reading, recipes, sheet music, or other hands-free reference use. Choose an interval that balances those needs rather than automatically selecting the shortest one.
Amazon documents the path Settings > Display or Display & Sounds > Display Sleep or Sleep, then choose how long the screen stays on while idle. Other power options Amazon lists include dimming the screen, Smart Suspend, keeping software current, lowering volume, and Battery Saver or Low Power Mode where available. Availability varies; Amazon says Battery Saver or Low Power Mode is available on 8th-generation and newer Fire Tablets. Check the options on your own device.

Decide whether automatic storage archiving suits you
Auto Archive is useful if you want the tablet to clear space without manually reviewing every eligible app. Amazon says it can archive non-Amazon apps that have been infrequently used in the past 60 days (Amazon Customer Service; the help page does not state a year). Archived apps are removed from the Home screen, and notifications identify them so they can be reinstalled.
Amazon documents different manual archive steps for Fire OS 7 and Fire OS 8, so check the current Optimize Storage help page for your version rather than assuming one path applies to both. Amazon-purchased content removed from the tablet remains associated with the Amazon account and is saved to the Cloud; removing it from the device does not delete it from the account.
Reduce recommendations and lock-screen content
If you want less promotional or suggested content, Amazon documents separate controls for lock-screen offers and Home screen recommendations. Menu names and availability can differ by software version.

Filter mature or adult-targeted lock-screen offers
Amazon’s documented route is Settings > Apps and Notifications > Amazon App Settings > Special Offers > Content Filtering. Use this to filter mature or adult-targeted images in lock-screen offers.

To hide an individual recommendation in the Discover row, Amazon says to long-press the content and select Not Interested. To remove the Recommendations section, its documented route is Settings > Apps and Notifications > Amazon App Settings > Home Screens, where you can toggle Recommendations and Continue and Discover Row.
Choose adult parental controls or a child profile
The right control depends on who uses the tablet. Amazon describes adult-profile Parental Controls as designed for people 13 and older; for children under 13, it directs families to use a child profile.

Adult-profile restrictions
Amazon’s basic route is Quick Settings > Settings > Profile and Parental Controls. Enable restrictions and set a password. Available controls can restrict web browsing; email, contacts, and calendar apps; store purchases; Prime Video playback; content types; wireless connectivity; the camera; and location-based services.
The Parental Controls password is different from the lock-screen password. Amazon says forgetting it requires a factory reset to restore full access, so choose a password you can retain. These restrictions are not a blanket filter: Amazon warns they do not remove every mature or adult-rated item from apps, books, music, or store search results.
Child-profile controls
Amazon’s child-profile options include age filters, content sharing, store access, in-app purchase requests, camera and gallery access, volume limits, lock-screen profile visibility, and child-profile password options. See Amazon’s child-profile guidance for the controls available on your device.

Use accessibility settings that help the person using the tablet
Accessibility is not a blanket performance optimization; enable the features that make reading, viewing, or interacting easier for the user. Amazon lists font size, screen magnifier, high-contrast text, color correction and inversion, audio descriptions, closed captions, Switch Access, and Voice Access. Find available options under Settings > Accessibility.
Availability depends on the device and software. Amazon says its general accessibility steps cover Fire OS 5 and higher; some vision options apply to Fire OS 7 and higher; display size is available on Fire OS 8; and Voice Access is limited to a listed compatible model with the device set to English. Amazon also cautions that accessibility features can change how the tablet functions, so check the effect of each option after enabling it.
