You can upgrade some all-in-one PCs, but the parts and procedures vary by exact model. Before buying RAM or an internal SSD—or opening the case—find the full model number and check its manufacturer specifications and service manual. If your goal is simply to add file storage, an external USB SSD may avoid disassembly, provided your PC has a compatible port.
Start with your exact model
“All-in-one PC” describes a form factor, not a shared internal layout. A manufacturer may make one model with removable memory and another with soldered RAM; storage type and access steps can differ too. Identify the complete model and configuration, then use the documentation for that specific machine rather than relying on another AIO’s teardown.
For example, Dell’s OptiPlex 5270 AIO service manual includes procedures for removing and installing memory modules and removing the SSD. That establishes upgrade paths for this model, not for all-in-one PCs generally. HP’s OmniStudio series specifications list two SO-DIMM slots and an M.2 NVMe SSD option for the cited series; check the exact submodel and board specifications before selecting parts.
Can you add or replace RAM?
Only if the specific model has accessible, replaceable memory. Check the manual and specifications for the memory type or generation, supported capacity, number of slots, and any configuration rules. Do not assume that a computer with a particular brand or screen size uses the same memory arrangement as another model in that family.

There are exceptions in both directions. The 2016 iFixit Surface Studio teardown found that the RAM is soldered and not upgradeable. Dell’s OptiPlex documentation describes removable memory modules, and HP lists SO-DIMM slots for the cited OmniStudio series. These examples show why the model number—not the AIO category—determines whether a memory upgrade is possible.
More RAM may help if your current workload is constrained by available memory, but the sources here do not establish a universal performance gain or percentage improvement. Confirm compatibility and capacity first, and treat an upgrade as a way to address a demonstrated memory limitation rather than a guaranteed speed boost.

Can you upgrade the internal SSD?
Some all-in-one PCs have serviceable internal storage; others may use different layouts or access procedures. Before ordering a drive, verify the supported interface, physical size, capacity limits, chassis access procedure, and the steps needed to migrate your operating system and data.

The Surface Studio teardown identified both a removable M.2 SSD and a standard SATA hard drive in that particular 2016 model. It also found the CPU and GPU soldered, as well as the RAM. This is a model-specific teardown, not a template for other Surface devices or AIOs. Dell’s OptiPlex 5270 service documentation is another model-specific source that lists an SSD removal procedure.

Replacing a system drive is different from adding a separate place for files: plan how to preserve or reinstall the operating system and recover your data before removing the existing drive.
When an external SSD is the simpler choice
A USB external SSD can provide extra file capacity or backup space without opening the computer, as long as the AIO has a compatible port. The Surface Studio teardown documents USB 3.0 ports on that model. Check your own PC’s specifications to determine its available connection and supported speed.

Choose an external drive based on the capacity you need, the connection speed your PC supports, whether you need to carry the drive, and whether it will hold working files or backups. It adds external storage; it does not upgrade or replace the internal operating-system drive.
Use the service guide and work safely
Internal work can damage components if the wrong tools or procedure are used. Follow the exact model’s service instructions, disconnect power, and use appropriate electrostatic-discharge precautions. If the procedure is unclear or you are not comfortable doing it, stop and seek qualified help.

Dell’s 2018-authored OptiPlex 7460 manual says, “A component can be replaced or, if purchased separately, installed by performing the removal procedure in the reverse order.” The same manual cautions, “Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty.” Check the terms that apply to your own device rather than assuming this statement applies identically to every manufacturer or model.
Microsoft’s Surface Studio 2+ service guide is explicit: “If at any point you’re unsure or uncomfortable about performing the repairs, as detailed in this Guide, DO NOT proceed.” It also warns that failing to follow the guide, using incompatible or modified replacement parts, or failing to use proper tools could cause serious injury, death, or damage to the product or other property. Follow the guide for your own model, not a procedure written for a different AIO.
Decide whether the upgrade makes sense
Compare the verified benefit with the compatibility requirements and effort involved. An internal upgrade may be worthwhile when the manual confirms a supported part and the computer’s age and workload justify the work. If you only need room for files or backups, external storage may meet that need without chassis disassembly.
