The most useful privacy changes are simple: press the Echo microphone-off button when you do not want voice input, review and delete Alexa activity, choose a voice-recording retention period, and decide whether recordings may be used to improve Alexa. If you own an Echo Show, check its camera access for your exact model and review interest-based advertising and suggested content. Each setting has a cost: turning off the microphone stops voice commands, shorter retention can reduce personalization, camera controls can disable features, and deleting data may not remove every related record immediately.
Change these settings first
Use this order if you want a practical privacy baseline without disabling the whole device:
- Mute the microphones when voice interaction is not wanted. Press the microphone button on the Echo. A red light indicates that the microphones are off. Press the button again to restore voice responses.
- Inspect Alexa History. In the Alexa app, open More > Alexa Privacy > Review Alexa History. You can also manage activity at amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings.
- Choose retention. Select automatic deletion after three months or 18 months, or choose not to save voice recordings.
- Review data-use permissions. Open More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data and decide whether recordings may be used to improve services and develop new features.
- On an Echo Show, check the camera. Look for Camera Access under Privacy & Permissions on the device or in that device’s settings in the Alexa app.
Alexa app labels can change between releases. If a path looks different, search the app for Alexa Privacy or Privacy & Permissions rather than guessing at a similarly named control.

The physical microphone button is the fastest way to prevent an Echo from accepting voice input. When it is off, Alexa will not respond to voice commands until you turn the microphone back on. The red indicator is a visual check that the setting took effect.

This is a device-level pause, not an account deletion. The Echo remains usable through the Alexa app, so you can still operate supported controls without speaking to it. That makes the button useful for bedrooms, meetings, confidential conversations, or any period when a wake word could be misheard.
Press the same button again when you need voice control. If the red light does not appear, press the button once more and check that the device has power; do not assume the microphone is muted solely because Alexa did not answer.
Review recordings, transcripts, and false wakes
Alexa Privacy gives the account holder a record of interactions that can include audio recordings, the transcripts Alexa generated, typed requests, and Alexa’s responses. In the Alexa app, go to More > Alexa Privacy > Review Alexa History. Filter by date or device, open an item, and use the available deletion control.
Check suspected false activations
A false wake happens when an Echo mistakes another sound or word for its wake word. History lets you see what audio was captured and what Alexa thought you said. Reviewing these entries helps you distinguish a genuine request from an accidental activation and gives you a specific item to remove.

Understand what deletion means
Deleting an entry starts a process in Amazon’s cloud systems; it is not necessarily instantaneous. Some associated information may remain while features such as reminders or orders continue to function. Data held by a third-party skill developer, or information stored outside Amazon’s cloud, is not necessarily removed by the Alexa History action. Amazon also says trained systems may be retained after the source data is deleted.
For that reason, treat deletion as removal of the Alexa activity you can manage, not as a guarantee that every derivative or related record disappears at once.
Choose a voice-recording retention option
Retention controls determine how long Alexa keeps recordings and what remains after processing. The choices balance privacy against voice recognition and personalization.

Choose the shortest period that still supports your needs. Someone who occasionally investigates false wakes may prefer three months; someone who relies on Voice ID should not select the no-save option. If you change the setting, check whether your household depends on personalized responses or voice recognition before assuming nothing else will change.

Decide whether recordings can improve Alexa
Under More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data, Alexa provides a control for using voice recordings to improve services and develop new features. Limiting this use is separate from deleting your history: a recording can be retained for your chosen period without being used for improvement, or you can combine a restrictive data-use choice with a shorter retention period.
Amazon warns that deleting voice recordings, text transcripts, and typed requests may limit personalization and improvements based on your interactions and can cause some features to stop working. Consider this setting separately from retention so you know which trade-off you are accepting: storage duration, improvement use, or both.
Check camera privacy on an Echo Show
Only screen-equipped Echo models have cameras, and the control layout differs by model and generation. Do not apply instructions for one Echo Show to another without checking its model name.
Use the software camera control where available
For the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Amazon’s device guidance places Camera Access in Privacy & Permissions. You can change it on the Echo Show itself or through the Echo Show’s device settings in the Alexa app. Turning camera access off disables features that depend on the camera, so expect video calling, visual recognition, or other camera-based functions to be unavailable until you restore access.

Check for a physical shutter
Amazon says most Echo Show devices include a built-in physical camera shutter, but “most” does not mean every model. Inspect the camera area and the model’s current documentation before relying on a shutter. A cover made for a different generation may not fit or may obstruct sensors and the display; verify compatibility rather than buying a generic accessory.
If your model has both a shutter and a software switch, use the shutter when you want a visible mechanical barrier and use the software setting when you want to disable camera-dependent features. Neither control is a substitute for muting the microphones.
Limit interest-based ads without expecting an ad-free screen
Alexa’s Manage Your Alexa Data area includes an interest-based advertising control. Turning it off limits ads selected from inferred interests; it does not remove every Amazon advertisement.

Echo Show screens can also display suggested content that is not the same as a sponsored ad. Suggestions may include recommendations, frequent orders, and local places. Therefore, opting out of interest-based ads should not be described as disabling all recommendations or every promotional item on the home screen. Review the separate content and display choices available on your model if your goal is a less personalized screen.

When you speak to Alexa, the Echo sends a recording of the request to Amazon’s cloud for processing and a response. Privacy controls act at different points in that flow:

- Microphone button: prevents new voice input at the device until re-enabled.
- History review and deletion: manages activity already associated with your account, subject to processing time and data held elsewhere.
- Retention: determines how long eligible recordings are stored, with the no-save option retaining transcripts and typed requests for a limited period.
- Improvement-use control: determines whether recordings may contribute to service improvement and new features.
- Camera Access or shutter: controls visual input on supported Echo Show models, independently of microphones.
- Interest-based ads: affects ad personalization, not the existence of every ad or suggested item.
Changing one control does not automatically change the others. For example, muting the microphone does not erase past recordings, and selecting a short retention period does not disable the camera.
A maintenance routine that avoids surprises
- After setup: open Alexa Privacy, select a retention period, and review the improvement-use choice.
- Weekly or monthly: scan Alexa History for unfamiliar requests and false wakes, then delete entries you do not want retained.
- Before private conversations: press the microphone button and confirm the red indicator.
- After an Echo Show change or replacement: verify Camera Access and whether the new generation has a physical shutter.
- After an app update: revisit Alexa Privacy because menu labels and locations can change.
Troubleshooting common privacy-setting problems
Alexa still responds after you changed a setting
Check whether you muted the correct Echo. The microphone button applies to the individual device, while Alexa History and retention are account-level controls. If the red light is not visible, press the button again and confirm the device has power.
You cannot find the menu named in these steps
Use the Alexa app’s search or browse More for Alexa Privacy. Amazon may rename or relocate controls. On an Echo Show, look specifically for Privacy & Permissions; camera options are not present on audio-only Echo models.
A feature stopped working after tightening privacy
Check the setting that changed. Voice ID does not work with the no-save recording choice. Camera-dependent functions stop when Camera Access is disabled or a shutter is closed. Personalization can be reduced when recordings, transcripts, or typed requests are deleted or excluded from improvement use.
Deleted activity still appears
Deletion can take time to propagate. Related records, third-party skill data, and information retained in trained systems may follow different lifecycles, so the Alexa History view is not proof that every associated copy has been removed.
