To adjust AirPods audio, connect them to your device, then use Control Centre or the AirPods settings page to choose a listening mode, tune ambient sound, or enable features such as Conversation Awareness. For clearer or more comfortable sound, Headphone Accommodations offers hearing-oriented adjustments; Spatial Audio controls immersive playback on supported content. The right choice depends on your AirPods model, device software, and listening situation—not on a universal “best” setting.
Find the AirPods audio controls
Put in your AirPods and connect them to your iPhone or iPad. Connected AirPods can appear near the top of Settings. For quick listening controls, open Control Centre and touch and hold the volume slider. The expanded panel shows options supported by your model and software. Apple’s listening mode guide and Adaptive Audio guide describe the available controls and model differences.
On a Mac, listening modes and related controls are available through Control Centre or System Settings, depending on the control. Menu names and placement can vary by operating-system version.
Choose how much outside sound to hear
In the expanded volume control, tap Listening Mode and select an option available for your AirPods:

- Noise Cancellation reduces external sound. Choose it when you want fewer surrounding distractions.
- Transparency lets environmental sound through, which can help when you need to remain aware of nearby activity.
- Off turns off both Noise Cancellation and Transparency where offered.
- Adaptive Audio blends Noise Cancellation and Transparency, adjusting how much environmental sound is allowed as conditions change. It is listed for AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2 in Apple’s current guidance.
For Adaptive Audio, open the connected AirPods’ settings, go to Listening Mode, then tap Adaptive and move the slider to allow more or less ambient sound. Settings carry across Apple devices when AirPods switch between them, according to Apple.
Let volume and conversation respond automatically
Personalized Volume
Personalized Volume adjusts media volume in response to environmental conditions and learned listening preferences. To turn it on, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside your connected AirPods, and enable Personalized Volume. On some interfaces, the option is nested under Audio & Routing.

Conversation Awareness
Conversation Awareness lowers media volume and enhances nearby voices when you start speaking. It can be useful when you want to talk without taking out your AirPods. To end it manually, press and hold the stem. Its availability depends on the AirPods model and software; Apple’s Adaptive Audio support page and listening mode guide identify supported features.

Adjust sound for music, calls, and spoken audio
Headphone Accommodations lets you amplify soft sounds and adjust certain frequencies. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations, turn it on, then choose Customize Audio or select a tuning option manually:

- Brightness adjusts higher-frequency sound.
Choose an amplification level to suit your listening preference. Apple says the settings can apply to media and phone calls; supported AirPods Pro models also allow customization of Transparency. Set Spatial Audio and head tracking
Spatial Audio controls apply when you play supported content. On iPhone or iPad:

- Start playing supported audio.
- Open Control Centre and touch and hold the volume slider.
- Tap Spatial Audio.
- Choose Off, Fixed, or Head Tracked, as available.
Fixed provides immersive playback without head tracking. Head Tracked adjusts the perceived position of sound as you move your head. Check compatibility before looking for a setting
AirPods features vary by model and operating-system version. If an option is missing, first check the exact AirPods model and that the AirPods are connected; then consult Apple’s model-specific listening mode guidance. Some controls, including Loud Sound Reduction for specified models, are available only in certain countries or regions. Apple’s menu labels may also shift between software versions.
