Short answer: choose AirPods Pro 3 if you want Apple’s most complete in-ear feature set, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation if you want ANC without silicone tips, and AirPods Max 2 if you prefer over-ear headphones. Your first decision should be fit—open-style earbuds, silicone-tip earbuds, or over-ear cups—followed by noise control, battery mode, charging case, compatibility and regional price.
The AirPods decision in one minute
Apple’s current comparison page lists AirPods 5, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Max and AirPods Max 2, along with older generations. The models fall into two physical categories: in-ear AirPods and over-ear AirPods Max. See the live lineup at Apple’s AirPods comparison.
| Model or variant | Form factor | What it is best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods 5 | In-ear, open-style | Listeners who prefer an earbud design without silicone tips |
| AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case | In-ear, open-style | People who want the AirPods 5 design with the listed wireless-charging case variant |
| AirPods 4 | In-ear, open-style | Everyday listening when active noise cancellation is not the priority |
| AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation | In-ear, open-style | Listeners who want ANC but do not want silicone ear tips |
| AirPods Pro 3 | In-ear, silicone tips | Buyers seeking the broadest premium in-ear feature set |
| AirPods Pro 2 | In-ear, silicone tips | People considering Apple’s previous Pro generation, especially for hearing-health features |
| AirPods Max | Over-ear | Listeners who specifically want a full-size headphone design |
| AirPods Max 2 | Over-ear | Over-ear buyers who want the current Max option and its published battery figure |
There is no single “best” AirPods model for every ear or listening environment. Open-style earbuds can feel less occluding, silicone tips can create a more controlled seal, and over-ear cups change the weight, portability and heat profile entirely. Decide on that physical fit before comparing feature checklists.

Open-style in-ear AirPods
AirPods 5 and AirPods 4 use an open-style in-ear approach. They do not use the interchangeable silicone-tip system identified for AirPods Pro 3. This design is a sensible starting point if you dislike the plugged-in sensation of sealed ear tips or if you need to remain more aware of nearby sounds. The trade-off is that fit depends heavily on your ear shape, and outside sound is not physically sealed out.
#1 Best Overall
- REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
- PERSONALIZED SPATIAL AUDIO — Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you, creating a theater-like listening experience for music, TV shows, movies, games, and more.*
- IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — AirPods 4 feature the Apple-designed H2 chip. Voice Isolation improves the quality of phone calls in loud conditions. Using advanced computational audio, it reduces background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice for whomever you’re speaking to.*
- MAGICAL EXPERIENCE — Just say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” to play a song, make a call, or check your schedule.* And with Siri Interactions, now you can respond to Siri by simply nodding your head yes or shaking your head no.* Pair AirPods 4 by simply placing them near your device and tapping Connect on your screen.* Easily share a song or show between two sets of AirPods.* An optical in-ear sensor knows to play audio only when you’re wearing AirPods and pauses when you take them off. And you can track down your AirPods and Charging Case with the Find My app.*
- LONG BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. And get up to 30 hours of total listening time using the case.*
Open-style fit is also why an ANC specification should not be interpreted as identical isolation to a sealed in-ear design. Active noise cancellation can process external sound, but the acoustic seal, ear geometry and program mode still affect what you hear.
Silicone-tip in-ear AirPods Pro
AirPods Pro 3 includes five tip sizes: XXS, XS, S, M and L. That range gives you more opportunities to achieve a stable seal than a one-piece open earbud. Tip choice affects comfort, bass balance, noise cancellation and the published hearing-protection result, so test more than one size rather than assuming the medium tip is correct.
A sealed tip can be useful on aircraft, trains or busy streets, but some people find the pressure or occlusion uncomfortable. If you are undecided, the best comparison is physical: wear an open-style model and a correctly fitted Pro model for a sustained session, then judge comfort separately from sound preference.

AirPods Max and Max 2 place the drivers around your ears instead of inside the ear canal. Choose this form when you prefer a headband and ear cushions, want controls and battery capacity associated with a full-size headset, or simply do not want earbuds. Over-ear headphones are less pocketable and can feel warm or heavy during long sessions; those are fit considerations, not defects that can be resolved by changing an ear tip.
Step 2: decide whether you need active noise cancellation
Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones and signal processing to reduce portions of external sound. Apple lists ANC on AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro models and AirPods Max models. The company’s “up to” language describes results under its stated test methods; it is not a guarantee that every listener will experience the same reduction. Ear shape, tip selection, placement, wind and the noise spectrum all matter.
- Choose AirPods 4 without ANC when you want the open-style design and do not need electronic noise reduction.
- Choose AirPods 4 with ANC when you want an open-style fit but still want Apple’s ANC option.
- Choose AirPods Pro 3 or Pro 2 when you want sealed silicone-tip fit together with the Pro feature set and ANC.
- Choose AirPods Max 2 when ANC matters but you prefer over-ear cups.
ANC is most useful for steady, lower-frequency sound such as cabin or engine rumble. It does not make every voice, sudden impact or high-frequency sound disappear. Transparency or awareness modes can be more appropriate when you need to hear announcements, colleagues or traffic; check the mode selected before judging battery life or isolation.

Battery life and charging: compare like with like
Apple’s current comparison gives three directly useful per-charge figures under specified conditions. These are manufacturer claims, not independent laboratory measurements, and actual runtime changes with volume, wireless features, microphones, temperature, calls and the selected audio mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Model | Published listening figure | Condition attached to the figure |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods Pro 3 | Up to 8 hours per charge | Active Noise Cancellation enabled |
| AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation | Up to 6 hours per charge | Active Noise Cancellation enabled |
| AirPods Max 2 | Up to 20 hours | Listening with Active Noise Cancellation enabled |
“Up to” does not mean you should budget exactly that many hours on every trip. If your use includes calls, high volume or frequent mode changes, leave margin. Also distinguish a single earbud charge from the total runtime supplied by a charging case; the figures above are the per-charge or listening figures Apple attaches to each model in its comparison.
AirPods Pro 3’s case is listed as USB-C MagSafe and supports charging with a compatible Apple Watch charger. Confirm the exact case variant at checkout, especially when comparing AirPods 5 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. A connector or case difference can matter more than a small specification change if your existing charging setup is built around USB-C, MagSafe or an Apple Watch charger.
AirPods Pro 3: the premium in-ear choice
AirPods Pro 3 is the clearest choice when you want Apple’s current premium in-ear package: silicone-tip fit, ANC, the longest of the three listed earbud runtimes with ANC enabled, and the hearing-related features Apple associates with the Pro line. Its five tip sizes make fit an explicit part of setup rather than an afterthought.
Why choose it
- Five tip sizes (XXS, XS, S, M and L) allow more precise sealing.
- Apple lists up to eight hours per charge with ANC enabled.
- The case uses USB-C MagSafe and supports a compatible Apple Watch charger.
- Apple’s Pro 3 documentation includes Hearing Protection, subject to firmware, compatible Apple hardware and correct tip fit.
What to verify before buying
Check current price and availability for your country because the retrieved comparison page did not provide populated price fields. Verify that your iPhone, iPad or other Apple device meets the software and firmware requirements for the features you intend to use. If you are buying primarily for hearing assistance, read the eligibility and regional limitations in the hearing-health section below rather than treating Pro 3 as a universal medical device.
AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation: the non-Pro ANC route
AirPods 4 with ANC is the logical alternative for someone who wants noise cancellation but prefers the open-style AirPods shape. Apple lists up to six hours per charge with ANC enabled. Because it does not use the Pro line’s silicone-tip system, its seal and passive isolation will differ from AirPods Pro 3 even when both have ANC switched on.
Rank #3
- REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation help reduce outside noise before it reaches your ears, so you can immerse yourself in what you’re listening to.*
- HEAR THE WORLD AROUND YOU — The powerful H2 chip comes to AirPods 4. Adaptive Audio seamlessly blends ANC and Transparency mode — which lets you comfortably hear and interact with the world around you exactly as it sounds — to provide the best listening experience in any environment.* And when you’re speaking with someone nearby, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume of what’s playing.*
- IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — Voice Isolation improves the quality of calls in loud conditions.
Select this model when tip-free comfort is more important than the Pro fit system. Select Pro 3 instead when you need the option to tune the seal with five tip sizes, want the Pro-specific feature set, or expect the additional fit control to improve stability. The correct choice is about your ears and priorities, not just the model number.
AirPods 4 and AirPods 5: simpler open-style options
AirPods 4 is the straightforward open-style option in Apple’s listed lineup. The ANC variant adds active noise cancellation; the standard model is for buyers who do not need that feature. AirPods 5 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case are also listed as current in-ear choices. The case variant is important because charging hardware can determine whether the model fits your existing routine.
For these models, compare the exact product name, included case and listed features rather than assuming that a higher generation number automatically includes every Pro capability. Apple’s comparison page is the authoritative place to confirm the configuration shown for your region. Prices and retailer inventory change, and the source comparison used for this guide did not expose populated price fields.

AirPods Pro 2: when the previous Pro generation fits your needs
Apple’s current comparison still lists AirPods Pro 2. It remains relevant for buyers who find a suitable regional offer or who specifically need the Pro hearing-health workflow supported on Pro 2 and later. Do not assume that “Pro” alone identifies every current capability: firmware, operating system, hardware and region can determine whether a feature appears.
If you are comparing Pro 2 with Pro 3, use the current Apple specifications for both exact configurations and check the price difference in your market. The official documents establish supported features and constraints; they do not establish independent differences in sound quality, comfort, durability or long-term preference.
AirPods Max 2 and AirPods Max: choose over-ear deliberately
AirPods Max 2 is the over-ear choice in Apple’s current comparison, with up to 20 hours of listening while ANC is enabled. That figure is not directly comparable to an earbud’s per-charge number because the products have different batteries, fit, controls and carrying requirements. Max 2 makes sense when the physical experience of full-size headphones is the reason you are shopping.
Rank #4
- Automatically on, automatically connected
- Easy setup for all your Apple devices
- Quick access to Siri by saying “Hey Siri”
- Double-tap to play or skip forward
- New Apple H1 headphone chip delivers faster wireless connection to your devices
AirPods Max is also listed. Treat it as a separate over-ear decision, not as a larger version of an AirPods earbud. Consider headband comfort, ear-cup heat, storage, travel space and how often you need to switch between listening and hearing your surroundings. If you routinely carry only a phone and a small case, earbuds are usually the more convenient form factor; if you prioritize an around-ear fit, the convenience calculation reverses.

Hearing Test and Hearing Aid
Apple says Hearing Test and Hearing Aid are supported on AirPods Pro 2 and later with the latest firmware and compatible Apple devices. Availability can depend on region and language. Apple’s comparison identifies Hearing Aid as FDA-authorized for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, with device and software requirements. This does not mean every AirPods model includes the feature, and it is not a substitute for personal medical advice or a clinical evaluation.
Apple’s October 2024 white paper describes the software this way: “The Apple Hearing Aid Feature (HAF) is a self-fitting, over-the-counter air-conduction hearing aid software feature that enables users to compensate for perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.” The paper says it is intended for people aged 18 and older and specifies compatible Apple devices and software. Read the full document at Apple’s October 2024 hearing-health white paper.
Hearing Protection
AirPods Pro 3 documentation describes Hearing Protection as dependent on current firmware, compatible Apple devices and correct fit with the installed ear tips. Apple’s September 2025 data sheet reports a 12-decibel Noise Reduction Rating when used as directed. That number is specific to the data-sheet measurement context and should not be treated as the attenuation every user will achieve.
Apple’s warning is explicit: “The Hearing Protection feature is not suitable for protection against extremely loud impulse sounds, such as gunfire, fireworks, or jackhammers.” Read the complete AirPods Pro 3 Hearing Protection Data Sheet. Use purpose-built hearing protection for hazardous impulse noise and follow local occupational-safety guidance.

Compatibility, firmware and regional availability
AirPods hardware can pair broadly, but the most advanced capabilities may require a current firmware version, supported Apple hardware and a compatible operating system. Some features also depend on region or language. Before buying for a specific function, confirm all four conditions:
Best Value
- Active Noise Cancellation blocks outside noise, so you can immerse yourself in music
- Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
- Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
- Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
- Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit
- The exact AirPods generation and case variant.
- The Apple device model you will use most often.
- The operating-system and firmware versions required by the feature.
- Whether the feature is offered in your country and preferred language.
Apple also identifies wired USB-C as required for the listed lossless and ultra-low-latency audio on compatible content. A USB-C connector alone does not make every source lossless or ultra-low latency; the AirPods model, cable path, device, software and content all have to meet the stated requirements. Check Apple’s comparison page for the current compatibility notes instead of relying on a retailer’s abbreviated bullet list.
A practical buying process
- Choose the form factor. Decide between open-style in-ear AirPods, silicone-tip AirPods Pro or over-ear AirPods Max. Eliminate models whose physical fit you already know you dislike.
- Set your noise-control requirement. If you need ANC, limit the comparison to AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro models and AirPods Max models listed by Apple. If awareness and an open fit matter more, compare the standard open-style models.
- Compare battery figures under your mode. Use Apple’s published conditions: up to eight hours for Pro 3 with ANC, up to six hours for AirPods 4 with ANC and up to 20 hours for Max 2 with ANC. Leave margin for calls, volume and temperature.
- Check the case and connector. Confirm USB-C, MagSafe, wireless charging and Apple Watch charging support for the precise variant you are purchasing.
- Verify feature compatibility. For Hearing Aid, Hearing Test, Hearing Protection, lossless or ultra-low-latency audio, check firmware, device, operating-system, region and language requirements.
- Check the current local price. Apple’s comparison page used for this guide did not expose populated prices, so use the current listing for your country and avoid comparing a one-time promotion with a regular price.
- Plan the fit test. For Pro 3, try the five tip sizes and reassess seal and comfort. For open-style buds, confirm they remain stable during walking and head movement. For Max, wear the headset long enough to notice pressure or heat.
Recommendations by listener
For the best premium in-ear feature set
Start with AirPods Pro 3. It combines silicone-tip adjustment, ANC, the highest listed earbud runtime with ANC enabled and the current Pro hearing-related documentation. Confirm price, compatibility and regional availability before purchase.
For ANC without silicone tips
Choose AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. It is the direct non-Pro path to ANC in Apple’s open-style in-ear design, with up to six hours per charge under the ANC condition Apple states.
Recommended Free Tools
For a simple open-style daily pair
Compare AirPods 4 and the listed AirPods 5 variants. Select the case configuration that matches your charging routine, and do not pay for ANC if you will normally leave it disabled.
For over-ear listening
Choose AirPods Max 2 when you want Apple’s current over-ear option and its published up-to-20-hour ANC listening figure. Consider AirPods Max only after checking the generation, local price and included charging arrangement.
For hearing-health features
Begin with the eligibility and compatibility requirements for AirPods Pro 2 and later. Hearing features are conditional software functions, not universal capabilities across the AirPods range, and Hearing Protection is not rated for extremely loud impulse sounds.
Pitfalls that lead to the wrong purchase
- Buying by generation number alone: AirPods 4, AirPods 5, Pro and Max represent different fits and feature sets. Compare the exact model and case name.
- Treating ANC as a guaranteed amount of silence: Apple’s “up to” claims use stated test methods. Fit, wind and noise frequency change the result.
- Comparing battery numbers without their mode: The published figures above all carry an ANC condition. Switching modes or using calls changes runtime.
- Ignoring tip fit: Pro 3’s tip size affects stability, sound and the documented hearing-protection result.
- Assuming hearing features work everywhere: Firmware, compatible hardware, operating system, language and region can all be requirements.
- Using Hearing Protection as industrial PPE: Apple specifically excludes extremely loud impulse sounds such as gunfire, fireworks and jackhammers.
- Assuming a case is interchangeable: USB-C, MagSafe, wireless charging and Apple Watch charging support depend on the exact case variant.
- Expecting a specification sheet to answer comfort questions: Apple’s documents do not establish independent sound-quality, comfort or durability results. Fit remains personal.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The recommendations here are based on Apple’s published comparison and technical documents current in October 2026. Those sources are authoritative for Apple’s stated model names, feature requirements, battery claims and hearing-health cautions. They are not hands-on test results and do not prove which model sounds better, stays comfortable for your ears, survives your routine or offers the best value at a particular retailer.
Prices and stock were not verified, and Apple’s retrieved comparison did not provide populated price fields. Check the exact generation, case, regional price and return policy immediately before ordering. A return window is particularly valuable when you are uncertain about an open-style fit, silicone-tip seal or over-ear comfort.
Bottom line
For most readers who want the fullest in-ear experience, compare AirPods Pro 3 first. Choose AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation when you want ANC in an open-style earbud. Choose AirPods Max 2 only when over-ear headphones are your preferred form factor. Treat battery, hearing and connectivity figures as conditional manufacturer specifications, then verify your device, software, region, case variant and current local price before buying.
