To track your brand in AI search, measure four different outcomes separately: whether an answer mentions your brand, whether it cites a page you own, how your citation presence compares with others, and whether AI assistants send visits to your site. None is a complete measure of “AI visibility” on its own. Every reported figure needs its engine, prompt sample, date range, and metric definition.

Which AI visibility metrics should you track?

A useful report separates what appears in an answer from what happens after the answer is shown. A brand name in text, a linked source, a share of citations, and a referral session are different observations; combining them into one score obscures what changed.

Metric What it records What it does not establish
Brand mention Whether an AI-generated answer names the brand, whether or not it links to the site. A link, a visit, or how many people saw the answer.
Owned-page citation Whether a page on your domain appears as a cited source in an answer. A search ranking, impression count, click-through rate, or traffic total.
Citation share Your domain’s citations relative to a defined set of citations, under a stated query and calculation method. A universal share of user attention or a comparable score across tools with different methods.
AI referral sessions Sessions in your analytics attributed to visits from AI assistants. How often your brand or pages appeared in answers without a click.

Keep “found” or retrieved pages that were not cited separate from pages actually shown as sources. Some platforms distinguish these states; for example, Ahrefs’ metric definitions count a cited source separately from a page found but not cited.

Mentions are not citations

A response can name your company without linking to it. Conversely, a source link can point to your page even if the answer’s wording does not explicitly name your brand. Track mention rate and citation rate as separate measures. If your method counts at most one mention per answer, state that rule; Ahrefs, for example, counts a brand once per response even if the response repeats it.

Citation counts are not rankings or impressions

A citation count records sources displayed in sampled AI answers. It does not say where a source appeared within an answer, how many users viewed that answer, or whether they clicked. Microsoft’s Bing AI Performance announcement describes total citations as citations displayed during a selected period, “without indicating placement or presentation within a specific answer.” Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance preview therefore provides a visibility signal, not a traditional ranking or impression report.

Be especially careful with vendor-defined “impressions.” Ahrefs describes its estimated impressions as the sum of Google search volumes for prompts associated with a selected high-volume keyword when the brand appears in an AI answer. That is a model-derived estimate, not an observed count of people exposed to AI answers. Label the method and do not compare it directly with measured sessions or platform citation totals.

How to build a repeatable measurement process

A defensible trend begins with a consistent sample. A one-time check is a baseline, not evidence that visibility is durable. Preserve the prompt wording and sampling method so a later change in the numbers is interpretable.

  1. Define the scope. List your audience, brand and product names, major competitors, relevant regions and languages, and the buyer questions that matter. Decide which AI experiences are relevant to those users.
  2. Create a stable prompt panel. Include real buyer questions, separating branded prompts from non-branded topical questions. Keep the original prompt cohort fixed; add new questions as a separately labeled cohort rather than silently changing the denominator.
  3. Repeat observations consistently. Run the same prompts on the same engines or surfaces on a recurring schedule. Record the date, engine, prompt, answer, brand mention, owned-page citations, other cited domains, and notable factual inaccuracies. HubSpot recommends tracking a fixed prompt set over time in its guide to tracking brand presence in AI search.
  4. Calculate rates with visible denominators. For a mention rate, report responses that mention the brand divided by responses sampled. For an owned citation rate, report responses citing an owned page divided by responses sampled. State how you handle repeated mentions, multiple citations in one response, missing answers, and prompts that return no relevant result.
  5. Compare competitors on the same sample. Use the same prompt wording, engines, dates, and counting rules for every brand. A competitor comparison based on different prompt inventories or surfaces is not an apples-to-apples result.
  6. Track referrals in analytics separately. Report AI-referred sessions over a defined period alongside, not inside, mention or citation rates. Microsoft Clarity defines AI referral traffic as AI-referred sessions divided by total sessions for the period.
  7. Review trends and investigate changes. Look for shifts by engine, prompt topic, cited URL, and branded versus non-branded questions. AI answers can change as models, available material, freshness signals, and user demand change; a single observation cannot identify which factor caused a shift.

For every chart or headline number, include the engine or surface, prompt cohort, date range, numerator and denominator, and metric definition. If one of those changes, show the new series separately or annotate the break in methodology.

How to interpret citation share and other comparisons

“Share” is meaningful only when its denominator is explicit. Microsoft Clarity defines Share of Authority as citations to your domain divided by citations to all domains. It calculates the metric daily among queries with activity and separates branded from non-branded queries. A day with a different set of active queries can therefore produce a different share even without a straightforward change in overall demand. See the Clarity citation dashboard metric definitions before interpreting that figure.

Microsoft’s June 2026 Bing preview introduced Citation Share alongside views for topics and intents, as well as comparison over time. The company says these early-preview capabilities are intended to show richer signals, not to turn AI visibility into a single ranking or score. Coverage and precision may improve as the preview evolves. Microsoft’s announcement describes the features and their preview status.

There is no neutral, independently validated “good AI visibility score” established by the reviewed measurement materials. Set internal goals only after defining a relevant prompt panel and baseline; do not present a proprietary score or a vendor’s market share as an industry benchmark.

Which reporting approach fits your team?

Start with the simplest method that answers your reporting question. First-party dashboards can show their own platform’s citation activity, a manual log gives you control over prompts and answer review, and commercial monitors can package wider coverage. Their outputs are not automatically interchangeable.

Approach Documented coverage and use Interpretation limits
Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance Microsoft reports citations in Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries, and select partner integrations, including citation totals and cited URLs. The June 2026 preview adds intent, topic, citation-share, and over-time comparison views. The newer capabilities are preview features. Citation totals are not a single rank, and do not establish placement in an answer.
Microsoft Clarity AI Visibility Provides page citation activity, Share of Authority, topic and query views, cited pages, and AI referral sessions. Its citation dashboard does not measure conventional rankings, impressions, or click-through rates. Share of Authority follows its own daily active-query calculation.
Manual prompt log Lets a team repeat a fixed set of prompts and record mentions, citations, and answer quality. Useful for a low-cost baseline and qualitative review. It is a sample of observed responses, not a census of private user conversations. Keep the method consistent and avoid overreading one run.
Ahrefs Brand Radar and free checker Ahrefs describes a free snapshot across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Its paid Brand Radar offers historical trends, custom prompt tracking, and competitor benchmarking. Metrics follow Ahrefs’ definitions, including its estimated-impressions method. Do not assume those figures match first-party reporting.
HubSpot AEO HubSpot describes tracking brand mentions, citations, prompts, and competitors as part of an AEO workflow. The cited guide explains the vendor’s approach; it does not independently validate cross-vendor score accuracy.

For Bing Webmaster Tools, Microsoft said AI Performance was introduced as a public preview on February 10, 2026. The June 16, 2026 announcement described a global preview rollout of additional capabilities. For Clarity, domain verification is required; Microsoft documents verification using its tracking code, Google Search Console, or Bing Webmaster Tools. Its Citation Dashboard overview explains the dashboard’s scope.

When evaluating any monitor, check which engines and surfaces it covers, geographic and language availability, how prompts are selected, sampling frequency and history, metric definitions, competitor comparison, exports or API access, referral analytics, and current price or usage limits. Verify current vendor terms directly; feature coverage and preview availability can change.

Why two tools can report different numbers

Different figures do not necessarily mean one tool is wrong. Tools may use different prompt sets, engines, sampling schedules, denominators, and rules for counting mentions or citations. One may count a brand once per answer; another may count occurrences. A platform may count a cited URL while a third-party tracker estimates prompts or impressions using a separate method.

  • Compare the exact prompt cohort and date range.
  • Check whether each figure is a count, rate, share, estimate, or referral-session metric.
  • Confirm how each tool treats repeated mentions, multiple cited pages, unanswered prompts, and active-query days.
  • Separate first-party platform reports from sampled third-party monitoring rather than averaging them into one score.

Traditional search visibility should also be read separately. A conventional top result does not guarantee inclusion in a synthesized AI answer, which can draw on multiple sources and vary with context.

What a small team should do first

Choose a manageable set of buyer questions, establish the engines that matter, and keep a dated record of repeated answers. Report mentions, owned-page citations, and referral sessions in separate rows or charts. Add a first-party dashboard when you can verify the domain and the platform’s coverage answers a real question. Consider a paid monitor only when its prompt coverage, history, or comparison features solve a concrete measurement gap.
