Several enterprise pentesting services combine AI-assisted testing with human oversight, including HackerOne Agentic PTaaS, Synack Sara AI Pentesting, and Cobalt Autonomous Pentest. Their published descriptions assign AI work such as discovery, analysis, or test sequencing, while human specialists direct testing or validate findings. These are provider descriptions, not independent proof of comparative effectiveness.

What AI does—and what human testers should verify

AI can help expand discovery, analyze potential weaknesses, and sequence testing. The important distinction is what happens after a system flags a possible issue: a qualified tester should establish whether it is genuinely exploitable, document evidence and reproduction steps, and explain the risk in the target environment.

That division of work reflects a broader industry pattern. CREST’s 31 March 2026 announcement says providers use AI especially for reporting, reconnaissance, and analysis, while relying strongly on human expertise in higher-risk testing stages. Its published figures say 47% of organizations use AI for reporting, 44% for vulnerability scanning and enumeration, and 9% report autonomous agent-based testing. CREST’s summary does not show the study’s sample size or detailed fieldwork methodology, so these figures should not be treated as proof of industry-wide prevalence or effectiveness. AI pentesting services with human involvement

HackerOne Agentic PTaaS

HackerOne announced Agentic PTaaS on 26 January 2026. Its description says AI agents and human experts coordinate across reconnaissance, setup, exploitation, and validation as attack surfaces change. HackerOne says experts validate exploitability. The company’s description of completing work in hours that might otherwise take days is a vendor claim, not an independent comparative performance result. Read the HackerOne announcement.

Synack Sara AI Pentesting

Synack says Sara expands discovery and analysis, with its Red Team confirming whether vulnerabilities are real and exploitable. The product page describes a sequence of discovery, analysis, human validation, and delivery of findings. Its stated current coverage is external web and host assets; internal testing is described as being on the roadmap. Confirm current scope and terms directly with Synack before deciding whether it fits your environment. Details are on the Synack product page.

Cobalt Autonomous Pentest

Cobalt’s 23 July 2026 announcement describes pentesters directing each engagement while AI assists with chain prediction, prioritization, and adaptive sequencing. Cobalt says findings are delivered in 24 hours; that is a product claim, and the announcement does not establish that the timing applies to every engagement or define it as a complete report or remediation validation. The announcement said general availability was planned for August 2026, so verify current availability. Read the Cobalt announcement.

How to compare programs before buying

Ask providers to answer these questions for your actual assets and testing goals. A label such as “continuous” or “autonomous” does not by itself establish coverage, validation depth, or accountability.

  • Scope and authorization: Which assets are included? How is written authorization recorded, and how are newly added or changed assets brought into scope?
  • Supported environments: Does coverage include the external web applications, hosts, cloud services, APIs, internal networks, or other assets you need tested?
  • Division of work: Which tasks do AI systems perform, and which do human testers perform or direct?
  • Validation: Does a human review every finding or only selected findings? Who confirms exploitability, and what proof, reproduction steps, or attack-chain context is delivered?
  • Cadence and timing: Is testing continuous, scheduled, or point-in-time? Does a stated turnaround mean initial findings, a complete report, or remediation validation?
  • Governance and accountability: How are AI use, practitioner oversight, sign-off, data handling, and responsibility for the final report documented?
  • Remediation workflow: Can validated findings be prioritized and routed into your existing issue-tracking and remediation processes?

What the published human-in-the-loop figures establish

Cobalt’s announcement attributes a figure of 94% to Omdia Research, saying that this share of organizations sees the importance of keeping humans in the loop for offensive-security programs. Because the figure is cited by Cobalt and the announcement does not provide Omdia’s underlying methodology, treat it as a vendor-reported attribution rather than an independently confirmed statistic.

CREST Chief Product Officer Sebastian Madden said: “Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming embedded in cybersecurity service delivery. Responsible implementation requires these technologies to enhance professional capability without diluting accountability.” The practical test for a buyer is whether a provider can show who validates findings, what evidence supports them, and who takes responsibility for the final report.
