There is no evidence-backed universal winner among ContextForge, Mem0, and Zep. Choose based on what your application needs to remember and how you want to integrate and operate that memory: ContextForge is a candidate for project context in a Claude/MCP workflow, Mem0 for persistent memory operations with managed and open-source paths, and Zep for temporal entity relationships and a broader context layer.
These are vendor-described positions, not results from hands-on testing. The product details below reflect documentation available on October 7, 2026; confirm current features, deployment choices, quotas, and pricing before committing.
How the three memory layers differ
“AI memory” can mean project knowledge an assistant retrieves, persistent memory operations for an agent, or a structured record of how entities and facts change over time. The products describe different approaches, so a useful comparison starts with the context you need to persist—not a single leaderboard.

| ContextForge | Project and space knowledge for developer context | MCP integration with Claude Desktop and Claude Code | Managed SaaS; its documentation labels the product beta |
| Mem0 | Adding and searching persistent memories | Memory operations and API; MCP is also documented | Managed platform or open-source software you operate and provision |
| Zep | Temporal Context Graphs within a unified context layer | Python, TypeScript, and Go SDKs, agent-framework guidance, and governance material | Zep Cloud or community/self-host routes are described in vendor materials; verify current options |
This is a comparison of documented capabilities, not a hands-on test. See the ContextForge documentation, Mem0 documentation, and Zep v3 documentation for current details.

Which one should you shortlist?
Consider ContextForge for project memory in a Claude workflow
ContextForge’s documentation describes project knowledge storage, semantic search, Git synchronization, project and space organization, snapshots, team collaboration, and MCP integration with Claude Desktop and Claude Code. That makes it a plausible shortlist option when the memory unit is a software project and the assistant workflow is built around those Claude clients.
Its documentation explicitly says: “ContextForge is currently in beta. Features may change and you may encounter bugs.” Treat compatibility and feature availability as things to verify in your own workflow, rather than assuming a documented capability is stable or generally available. Consider Mem0 for persistent memory operations across an application
Mem0 documents operations for adding and searching persistent memories. Its documentation distinguishes a managed platform—with dashboard visibility and workspace quotas—from open-source software, where you control storage and rely on your own hardware and provider APIs. The trade-off is not simply hosted versus self-hosted: assess which operating model gives you the control, visibility, and maintenance capacity your team needs.

Consider Zep when temporal and entity context matters
Zep’s v3 documentation describes a unified context layer built around temporal Context Graphs and served through Context Lake. It lists Python, TypeScript, and Go SDKs, agent-framework guidance, governance material, and Graphiti as an open-source temporal knowledge graph framework. This is a candidate for workloads where representing entities and time-dependent relationships is central—not automatically the right fit for every agent that needs to retain facts.

Why published benchmark scores do not settle the choice
The available figures come from vendors or the authors of a research paper, not a controlled independent contest using one matched setup. The comparison pages describe differences in reporting or configuration, so treat the numbers as claims about particular experiments—not as a reliable ranking for your application.

These are figures presented on Mem0’s vendor-authored comparison page, not independently matched results. Mem0 comparison
- LoCoMo: The same Mem0 comparison reports 91.6% overall accuracy for its April 2026 algorithm and discusses Zep configurations while noting an active methodology dispute. Do not interpret the comparison as a settled head-to-head result. Mem0 comparison
- Deep Memory Retrieval: Mem0’s page reports 94.8% accuracy as Zep’s published result and says Mem0 had not published a DMR result there. It characterizes DMR as an older, shorter-horizon benchmark. Mem0 comparison
- Mem0 research paper: A 2025 Mem0-author preprint reports a 26% relative improvement on its LLM-as-a-Judge metric, 91% lower p95 latency, and more than 90% token-cost savings against its full-context method. These are author-reported results for the research system and its study conditions, not performance guarantees for a current deployment. Mem0 preprint
A separate ContextForge comparison table reports a different LongMemEval number for Zep than Mem0’s later vendor comparison. The sources do not establish a basis for reconciling the difference, so do not combine the figures or infer which reflects a fairer test. Neither substitutes for a current, independent evaluation on your workload. ContextForge comparison Mem0 comparison

How to evaluate the shortlist on your own workload
Use the same records and questions for each candidate. A memory layer that scores well on a published benchmark may still retrieve the wrong detail, retain outdated information, or impose an operational model that does not suit your application.
- Define what must persist. Write down representative examples: project files and decisions, user or agent memories, or facts and relationships that change over time.
- Use realistic queries. Include questions that require exact recall, context across records, and recognition of conflicting or stale facts. Keep the underlying records and questions identical across candidates.
- Record retrieval quality. Check whether the returned memory is relevant and complete, and whether the system handles changes and contradictions safely.
- Measure application impact. Record latency, token and context use, and the effect of retrieved context on the answers your application produces. Do not transplant published figures from a different setup.
- Check deployment and governance. Confirm integrations, data controls, privacy and governance requirements, quotas, operational effort, and total price for your expected use.
Decision rule
- Start with ContextForge if your central need is project- and Git-related context in a Claude Desktop or Claude Code workflow, and you are prepared to verify a beta product’s current behavior.
- Start with Mem0 if you want persistent-memory operations and need to choose between a managed platform and a stack you control through its open-source path.
- Start with Zep if temporal entity relationships and its broader context and governance model match the application’s needs.
These are shortlist recommendations based on vendor documentation, not a universal ranking. Your evaluation should determine whether the model, integration, retrieval behavior, and operating burden fit your application.
