There isn’t enough current, app-specific evidence to name a reliable overall winner among AI apps for children. The better choice depends on a child’s age, the task they want help with, the account and region they use, and how a parent can supervise access. Start by checking the provider’s age rules; then weigh privacy, answer reliability, and the limits of its parental controls.
What are the best AI apps for kids?
“Best” is use-case dependent. A general chatbot may help a child explore a topic or brainstorm, but that does not make it a specialist tutor or a dependable source of facts. Before choosing an app, decide whether the child needs study guidance, creative help, entertainment, language practice, or something else—and check that the specific service permits the child’s age and account type.
Current official guidance provides useful detail about ChatGPT and Gemini, but it does not establish a representative, product-by-product ranking of dedicated children’s AI learning apps. The options below are therefore examples to assess, not a tested “top picks” list or a claim that either product is best for every child.
ChatGPT: check the age rule and adult involvement
OpenAI says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13. For users aged 13 to 18, it requires parental consent; OpenAI also advises that any educational interaction with ChatGPT for a child under 13 be conducted by an adult. Check OpenAI’s current age and safety guidance before use.

Those are OpenAI’s descriptions, not an independent evaluation of safety or effectiveness. See OpenAI’s announcement for the product details.
Gemini: access depends on supervised account and location
Google documents parent-enabled Gemini Apps access for eligible supervised child accounts, managed through Family Link. Access is rolling out, some features have age requirements, and Google says Gemini Apps are unavailable to supervised accounts in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Confirm eligibility and current access details in Google’s guide to a child’s Gemini Apps experience.
Google cautions that its filters are not perfect, recommends exploring the tool with a child, and advises parents to discourage sharing sensitive personal information and to double-check answers. It also says children should understand that Gemini is an AI tool, not a person to confide in. These are Google’s stated recommendations; they are not a guarantee that every interaction will be appropriate or correct.

How common is children’s AI use?
The Common Sense Media Census: AI Use by Tweens and Teens, 2026, reports that among children aged 9 to 17 in its survey, 86% use or interact with AI and 24% do so daily. It also reports that 67% have used AI chatbots; among AI-using children, 89% report using AI for fun or entertainment and 85% for schoolwork or homework. In the same survey, 44% of children say a parent or guardian has not talked with them about how to use AI safely.
These are survey findings for the stated age group, not estimates that automatically apply to all children, countries, or age ranges. The report is available from Common Sense Media.
How should parents compare AI apps?
Use these checks for any product, including one recommended by a school or friend. A provider’s age policy, the app’s features, and regional access can change, so verify them before setting up an account.

- Age and account eligibility: Find the provider’s minimum-age rule, parental-consent requirement, and any route for a supervised child account. Check the rule for the specific service and account type rather than assuming one company applies the same conditions to every product.
- Purpose: Match the app to the task. Study guidance, open-ended chat, entertainment, creative work, image generation, and language practice are different uses. Don’t treat a general chatbot as a specialist tutor unless the provider establishes that role.
- Parent involvement: Find out whether a parent can enable or disable access, supervise use, or set controls. Access controls do not necessarily mean a parent can inspect every conversation; don’t assume visibility the provider has not documented.
- Answer reliability: Generated answers can be wrong. Encourage children to check important claims with a trusted source or adult, and not to present AI output as fact without verification.
- Privacy and relationship boundaries: Tell children not to enter sensitive personal details. Explain that a conversational AI is software, not a friend, professional, or trusted adult.
- Availability and device requirements: Check the child’s region, supervised-account support, app platform, device compatibility, and any feature restrictions before installation. Google lists Android tablets among supported Gemini mobile app devices, but its stated compatibility and availability conditions apply; a tablet is not a prerequisite. See Google’s Android availability information.
Are AI apps safe for children?
No app should be treated as risk-free based only on its age label or parental settings. Safety depends on the service’s rules and controls, the child’s age and purpose, and adult involvement. Google explicitly warns that its filters try to limit inappropriate content but are not perfect. More broadly, generated answers can be inaccurate, and an AI conversation should not replace a trusted adult or professional.
