For Firefox on desktop, start with Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) set to Standard. It blocks major tracker categories while keeping compatibility safeguards. Move to Strict when you accept that some embedded media, sign-in flows or other third-party features may need troubleshooting. If one site fails, use Firefox’s address-bar shield to disable ETP for that site only, reload, test, and restore protection elsewhere.

What Firefox’s protection settings actually control

Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection is primarily a tracker-blocking system, not a guarantee that every advertisement disappears. It targets technologies used to follow you between sites, including social-media trackers, cross-site cookies, cryptominers and fingerprinters. Some ordinary advertising can remain when it does not match those tracker categories.

The choice that matters most is whether Firefox blocks tracking content only in Private Windows or in every window. Standard and Strict make that trade-off differently. Total Cookie Protection also changes how cookies are stored: a cookie created by one site is isolated from other sites instead of being freely reused for cross-site tracking.

Firefox desktop settings compared

Firefox choice What it blocks or changes Compatibility implications
Standard Blocks social-media trackers, cross-site tracking cookies, cryptominers and fingerprinters. Tracking content is blocked only in Private Windows. Total Cookie Protection is enabled by default; other third-party cookies are isolated rather than universally blocked. The practical starting point for privacy with fewer unexpected failures. Most sites retain access to the third-party resources they use outside Private Windows.
Strict Blocks social-media trackers, all cross-site cookies, tracking content in every window, cryptominers and fingerprinters. More aggressive protection can remove third-party scripts, frames or media that a page still expects. Test sites you depend on for accounts, forms, payments, comments and video.
Custom Lets you choose categories of trackers and scripts to block. Custom exposes the same WebCompat exception controls available with Strict. Useful when you understand which category causes a failure. Turning off WebCompat exceptions can improve privacy but can also stop features such as video playback or login pop-ups.
Per-site exception The shield panel beside the address bar can turn ETP off for the current site and add that site to the exception list. Limits the compatibility concession to the site that needs it; protection remains enabled on other sites.

These labels and behaviors are Firefox desktop guidance from Mozilla Support, not a universal naming scheme for Chrome, Safari, mobile browsers or every blocking extension.

Why stronger blocking can break a page

Third-party content may be part of the visible feature

A page can load its own interface while a sign-in dialog, payment widget, comment system, video player or social post comes from another domain. Strict ETP can block the tracker bundled with that outside resource. The result may look like a normal application failure: a blank player, a button that does nothing, a form that never submits or a pop-up that never appears.

This does not mean every broken page is caused by ETP. The site could have a server outage, a script error, an expired session or a network problem. The per-site test described below is a way to isolate ETP as one possible cause, not proof that all failures originate in privacy protection.

Analytics callbacks should never be a required dependency

MDN Web Docs explains a subtler failure mode: blocking a tracker resource can prevent its callback from running. If a developer has made navigation, form submission or another core action wait for an analytics callback, tracking protection can stop the action even though analytics is not essential to the user’s task. MDN’s guidance is to provide a fallback path so the feature proceeds when the tracker is unavailable.

In other words, a site may be fragile because of its implementation, not because privacy protection is unreasonable. A well-designed page treats analytics and advertising integrations as optional and keeps essential behavior on first-party code.

What breakage evidence can—and cannot—tell you

A USENIX Security Symposium study published in 2023 analyzed 18,932 reviews and issue reports about blocking tools. The researchers organized the reported experiences into 38 specific breakage types across seven broad categories. Examples included slow pages, lost authenticated sessions, broken upload buttons, mispositioned elements and crashes.

Evidence in the study How to interpret it
18,932 reviews and issue reports A large collection of reported experiences, not a measurement of every website or user.
38 breakage types in seven categories A taxonomy of ways blocking can fail, not a probability that Strict will break a particular site.
46 users of dedicated blocking tools A small surveyed group; it is not a population estimate.
49 users of browsers with built-in blocking Another small surveyed group, useful for context but not a universal rate.

No current source establishes a universal percentage for “the chance a site breaks under Strict.” Treat the study as a catalog of possible symptoms, not a prediction for your own browsing list.

Choose a setting by the sites you rely on

Use Standard when reliability is the priority

Standard is the sensible default for a mixed browsing routine: work applications, shopping, banking, news, forums and entertainment. You still receive tracker blocking and cookie isolation, while Firefox limits tracking-content blocking to Private Windows. This reduces the number of ordinary pages that lose an embedded dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Strict when you can test and make exceptions

Strict is appropriate if stronger cross-site isolation matters more than seamless access to every embedded feature. Before switching, list the sites that handle payments, authentication, uploads, medical or government forms, collaboration and video. Visit each one, sign in, submit a non-destructive test form where possible, open its media and check any pop-up workflow.

Use Custom for a deliberate, category-by-category policy

Custom suits experienced users who can identify whether a problem comes from tracking content, cookies or a script category. Change one category at a time and retest; changing everything simultaneously makes the cause harder to identify. Leave WebCompat exceptions enabled unless you have a specific reason to accept failures in exchange for additional blocking.

Computer Privacy Screen Filter for 24 Inch 16:9 Aspect Ratio Monitor
  • Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
  • Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
  • Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
  • Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
  • Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed

Prefer a local exception over global weakening

If only one domain fails, do not turn off protection everywhere. A site-specific exception preserves your chosen ETP level for the rest of the web and gives you a reversible way to keep using the affected service.

How to configure ETP in Firefox desktop

Set Standard, Strict or Custom

  1. Open Firefox’s application menu and choose Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & Security.
  3. Find Enhanced Tracking Protection.
  4. Select Standard, Strict or Custom.
  5. If you choose Custom, review each tracker, cookie and script category before saving. Avoid changing several categories at once if you are trying to diagnose a particular failure.
  6. Open a few important sites in ordinary windows and Private Windows. The distinction matters because Standard blocks tracking content in Private Windows, while Strict applies that blocking in all windows.

Firefox’s settings are version-sensitive, so a future release may move a label or add an explanatory control. The Standard, Strict, Custom and WebCompat behavior described here reflects Mozilla’s Firefox desktop documentation accessed on October 13, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add a site-specific exception when a feature fails

  1. Stay on the affected page and identify the concrete failure: sign-in, payment, embedded video, comments, form submission, upload or another function.
  2. Click the shield icon to the left of the address bar.
  3. Use the panel’s control to turn Enhanced Tracking Protection off for this site.
  4. Allow Firefox to reload the page, or reload it yourself if it does not.
  5. Repeat the failed action. If it now works, the blocked resource may have been involved; if it does not, ETP was not demonstrated to be the cause.
  6. Use the same shield panel to turn protection back on whenever you no longer need the exception.

The exception is local to that site. It does not disable ETP for unrelated domains.

A troubleshooting sequence for “this site seems broken”

  1. Describe the symptom precisely. Note whether the problem is a login loop, missing payment control, stalled video, absent comments, rejected form, failed upload or mispositioned element. Specific symptoms are easier to compare after a setting change.
  2. Try the shield-panel exception. Turn ETP off for the current site and let Firefox reload. Do not begin by disabling privacy protection globally.
  3. Test the same action again. A successful retry makes ETP a plausible cause; an unchanged failure points toward another problem.
  4. Choose the least costly fix. Keep the exception only if you trust and need the site, or restore protection and use another access method if the feature is nonessential.
  5. Report reproducible breakage. Mozilla’s Webcompat project accepts reports when a legitimate site fails with protection enabled. Include the Firefox version, the ETP level, the affected URL and the exact action that fails.
  6. Re-enable protection after testing. Leaving a broad exception in place defeats the privacy decision you made for that site, especially on pages that handle accounts or personal data.

Privacy trade-offs beyond the visible ad

Blocking a tracker can reduce cross-site profiling even when an advertisement remains visible. Standard’s Total Cookie Protection isolates cookies by site, limiting the ability of a third-party cookie to recognize you across unrelated domains. Strict adds all-window blocking of tracking content and all cross-site cookies, which is a meaningful privacy gain when you can tolerate the compatibility cost.

Firefox also supports ad-blocking extensions, but the evidence available for this guide does not provide a complete, current compatibility matrix for individual extensions, browser combinations or mobile editions. An extension’s lists and controls can change independently of Firefox’s built-in ETP levels. Treat any additional blocker as another variable: if a site fails, first identify which layer is responsible before changing several settings together.

What this guidance does not establish

  • It does not establish that Standard, Strict or Custom labels exist with the same meaning in every browser.
  • It does not provide a current settings matrix for Chrome, Safari, Android, iOS or every desktop browser.
  • It does not promise that a site will never break, or that turning ETP off will fix every failure.
  • It does not provide a universal breakage probability for Strict.
  • It does not justify buying a separate privacy device or physical product; the practical action is a browser setting or a site-specific exception.

A practical decision checklist

  • Want a balanced default? Choose Firefox desktop Standard.
  • Want maximum built-in blocking and can test important sites? Try Strict.
  • Need fine control and understand tracker categories? Use Custom carefully.
  • Only one site is affected? Use the address-bar shield exception instead of weakening every site.
  • A feature still fails after the exception? Restore ETP and investigate the site, session, network or browser console rather than assuming tracking protection is responsible.
  • Does a developer control the site? Ensure analytics and advertising callbacks are never required for navigation, authentication, payments, forms or media playback.
