The TCL QM6K is the strongest sourced pick if you can find its 55-inch model for $500 or less: TechRadar names it the best 55-inch TV under $500, and its review reports Mini-LED, 144Hz and four HDMI 2.1 ports. The Hisense U65QF is a credible alternative if brightness and gaming connections matter most, but Tom’s Guide flags viewing-angle, fast-action and Fire TV interface drawbacks.

Prices change quickly. TechRadar reported the TCL at $499.99 at Best Buy, reduced from $799.99; treat that as a dated deal, not a guaranteed current price. Check the live listing, exact model and return terms before buying.

Best 55-inch smart TV under $500: TCL QM6K

For shoppers who want a 55-inch TV at the top of a $500 budget, the TCL QM6K is the clearest recommendation supported by the reviewed guides. TechRadar’s 55-inch TV guide, updated August 14, 2026, names it the best model under $500. The review lists a Mini-LED screen, 144Hz refresh rate, Google TV, four HDMI 2.1 ports, Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG support.

TechRadar measured peak brightness at 559 nits and input lag at 13.1 ms. Those are measurements for this model in that review, not guarantees of what every unit or setup will deliver. The reviewer described punchy color and contrast and found the picture watchable in moderate daylight in its living-room testing.

When the Hisense U65QF may be the better fit

The 55-inch Hisense U65QF is the alternative to consider if you value brightness and gaming connections. Tom’s Guide’s under-$500 TV guide lists a 4K resolution of 3,840 × 2,160, a 144Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG support, and Amazon Fire TV.

Its connections include two HDMI 2.1 ports, two HDMI 2.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port and one USB 3.0 port. Tom’s Guide says the TV performed well for brightness and color, while noting issues with some fast action, light bloom and viewing angles, as well as an uninspiring Fire TV interface. These are that guide’s review findings; they may not match every viewer’s experience or room.

  • SUPREME MINI LED DIMMING: delivers deep contrast and bright highlights for a truly superb picture.*

Choose between these two based on the details you will actually use, not just the refresh-rate figure. The TCL has four HDMI 2.1 ports and Google TV; the Hisense has two HDMI 2.1 ports and Fire TV. If multiple game consoles or other HDMI 2.1 devices will stay connected, port count may matter more than a small difference in advertised features.

What to look for in a 55-inch TV

Match the screen and brightness to your room

Room lighting affects how a TV looks in daily use. The QM6K’s Mini-LED backlight and TechRadar’s measured 559-nit peak brightness provide useful reference points, while the reviewer’s moderate-daylight observation offers context. A review-room result is not a promise that a screen will look the same in your home; consider windows, glare and where you sit before prioritizing brightness.

Compare HDR formats and review observations

Both models list support for Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, though the TCL’s listed Dolby format is Dolby Vision IQ. Format support tells you which HDR standards a set can accept; it does not by itself establish how impressive HDR will look. Read that alongside the reviewer’s picture observations, including the Hisense’s reported light bloom and the TCL’s noted color and contrast.

Check refresh rate and HDMI ports for gaming

Both TVs are listed at 144Hz, and both include HDMI 2.1 connections. That makes them relevant for gaming-focused shopping, but the port counts differ: four on the TCL and two on the Hisense. Check the TV’s live product details and the needs of your devices before deciding; a headline refresh-rate specification alone does not settle which setup is right for you.

Choose the smart-TV platform you want to use

The TCL uses Google TV, while the Hisense uses Amazon Fire TV. Since the platform is part of everyday use for finding and launching content, consider which interface you prefer as well as the screen and connections. Tom’s Guide specifically criticizes the U65QF’s Fire TV interface, so that tradeoff may weigh heavily if you care about menu experience.

How to make the final choice

  1. Set a delivered-price limit. Compare the live price, taxes or delivery charges that apply to your order, and any return terms. The reported TCL deal may have changed since the coverage appeared.
  2. Verify the exact 55-inch model. Confirm the model name and size in the retailer listing; do not assume every listing under a similar product name has identical features.
  3. Count the connections you need. Compare the HDMI 2.1 port count with the number of compatible gaming or other devices you plan to connect.
  4. Weigh the room and picture tradeoffs. Consider ambient light and seating position, then balance the reviewers’ reported strengths and drawbacks against your own priorities.
  5. Decide whether you prefer Google TV or Fire TV. The interface is a day-to-day part of the purchase, not an incidental specification.

TechRadar says its TV reviews consider picture, built-in audio, gaming features, smart-TV platform, ease of use, design and value, combining subjective review with objective measurements. Those criteria are useful context for interpreting its QM6K findings, but neither reviewed guide is a guarantee of performance in every home.
