Short answer: The best massage gun depends on where you use it and which features you will actually use. WIRED’s 2026 roundup names the Hyperice Hypervolt 2 its overall pick, the Theragun PRO Plus its athlete-focused pick, the Theragun Mini Plus its portable pick, and the LifePro Sonic its budget pick. Those are reviewer rankings, not personal testing by this publication, and prices and availability can change.

Our four 2026 picks at a glance

These four models cover different priorities rather than claiming that one device is universally best. A full-size gun generally offers more reach and attachment options; a compact gun is easier to carry but can involve compromises in power, runtime or attachments.

Model Best suited to What the 2026 guide says Price information
Hyperice Hypervolt 2 General use WIRED’s overall pick. The cited roundup emphasizes its balance for everyday users; detailed speed, amplitude, attachment and runtime figures were not stated in that roundup. Not stated in the cited WIRED summary; check the current US listing.
Theragun PRO Plus Athletes and feature-heavy recovery routines WIRED’s athlete pick. Therabody describes percussive, near-infrared LED, vibration, heated percussive and optional cold-therapy functions. $649.99 on the Therabody US product page when accessed; volatile manufacturer-page price.
Theragun Mini Plus Travel and compact storage WIRED’s portable pick. Therabody describes it as a travel-sized heated massage gun. $279.99 on the Therabody US product page when accessed; volatile manufacturer-page price.
LifePro Sonic Lower-cost entry point WIRED’s budget pick. The cited roundup does not establish a complete, independently verified specification set. Not stated in the cited summary; check the current retailer or manufacturer price.

WIRED also names the Bob and Brad Q2 Mini as a portable alternative. It is a useful option to investigate if the four picks above do not fit your budget or preferred shape, but it is not substituted into this four-model list.

How to choose the right massage gun for you

Start with your routine, not the highest number on a product page. Percussion range, amplitude, weight, grip, attachments, battery life and software all affect whether a device is comfortable and useful after the novelty wears off.

1. Decide where you will use it

  • Home recovery: A larger body and longer handle can make it easier to reach glutes, hamstrings and back muscles without awkward wrist angles.
  • Gym bag or travel: A compact model is easier to pack and carry. The trade-off may be fewer attachments, a smaller battery or less reach.
  • Shared household: Prioritize easy cleaning, intuitive controls and enough battery capacity that several people are not constantly recharging it.

2. Match the grip and reach to the body areas you can reach yourself

Massage guns transmit vibration through the handle, so a heavy device can become tiring when you hold it away from your body. A long or multi-position handle may help with legs and back; a very small gun can be easier to control around shoulders and forearms. If another person regularly helps with hard-to-reach areas, weight and balance matter less than they do for solo use.

3. Understand speed and percussion figures

Manufacturers and reviewers may report speed as RPM (revolutions per minute) or PPM (percussions per minute). Those labels are not automatically interchangeable across brands, so compare figures within the same measurement convention and consider the available intensity steps, not just the maximum.

4. Treat amplitude as one input, not a quality score

Amplitude is how far the attachment travels into the stroke. A larger number can feel more forceful, but comfort, control and the body area being treated determine whether that depth is appropriate. The official Theragun model-selection article identifies amplitude, extra treatments such as heat or LED light, durability and portability as key model differences.

5. Count attachments by purpose

More heads are useful only when they cover tasks you perform. Look for a soft option for sensitive areas, a standard head for broad muscle groups and any specialty head that matches your routine. Replacement-head availability can matter more than receiving several heads that remain in the case.

6. Estimate realistic battery needs

Runtime ratings are usually measured under particular settings and may vary with pressure, speed and heat functions. If you use a gun for a few minutes at a time, a shorter rated runtime may be adequate. Frequent users, coaches and households may value a larger battery or easy charging more than the smallest possible body.

7. Decide whether an app or Bluetooth connection helps

Guided routines can make a first-time user less likely to press too hard or stay on one spot too long. Bluetooth is less valuable if you prefer manual control or do not want to keep a phone nearby. Treat app support as a convenience feature, not evidence that the device produces better physiological results.

1. Hyperice Hypervolt 2: the balanced everyday choice

WIRED names the Hyperice Hypervolt 2 its overall pick for 2026. That position makes sense for readers who want a conventional, full-size massage gun without selecting a device primarily for extreme features, minimum weight or the lowest price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should consider it

  • People who expect to use a massage gun at home several times a week.
  • Users who prefer a full-size form factor to a travel-first mini design.
  • Buyers who want a mainstream model covered by a current editorial roundup.

What is not established here

The cited WIRED summary does not provide a complete set of Hypervolt 2 figures for weight, amplitude, attachment count, speed range or battery runtime. Do not assume those specifications from the similarly named Hypervolt Go 3 or Hypervolt 2 Pro; they are different models.

Buying decision

Choose the Hypervolt 2 when balanced everyday handling matters more than a heated head, LED treatment or the smallest possible travel footprint. Confirm the current box contents, warranty, charging method and price before ordering because those details can change by region and sales channel.

2. Theragun PRO Plus: the feature-rich athlete pick

WIRED’s 2026 guide selects the Theragun PRO Plus for athletes. Therabody’s product description lists several modes in one device: percussive treatment, near-infrared LED, vibration, heated percussive treatment and optional cold therapy. The combination is aimed at users who will actively use multiple treatment modes, not simply buyers who want the most expensive device.

Price and feature scope

The Therabody US product page listed the PRO Plus at $649.99 when accessed. That is a US manufacturer-page price and should be rechecked before publication or purchase. The listed features describe what the product is designed to provide; they do not establish that every advertised benefit has independent clinical support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who gets the most value

  • Athletes with a repeatable warm-up or recovery routine.
  • Users who want heat, light and vibration options alongside percussion.
  • People comfortable carrying and storing a larger, more complex device.

Who should look elsewhere

If you mainly need a quick treatment during travel, paying for several modes may add cost and weight without improving your routine. A simpler full-size gun or compact model can be easier to use consistently.

How to interpret Therabody’s evidence language

Therabody says Theragun has “16 peer-reviewed studies and counting.” That is a statement from the manufacturer; it does not establish that every current model, setting or advertised benefit has independent support. Use the device according to its instructions rather than treating it as a medical treatment.

3. Theragun Mini Plus: the travel-first option

WIRED names the Theragun Mini Plus its portable pick. Therabody’s product page describes it as a travel-sized heated massage gun and listed a price of $279.99 when accessed in the United States.

Why portability changes the decision

A smaller gun is easier to place in a carry-on, desk drawer or gym bag. It is also easier to hold for short sessions. The compromises are practical: a compact body may provide less reach, fewer attachment choices or shorter runtime than a full-size model. Check the current specification sheet rather than assuming that “Mini Plus” matches the capabilities of another Theragun model.

Best use cases

  • Travel days when a full-size device is inconvenient.
  • Short sessions on calves, quads, forearms and shoulders.
  • Users who value integrated heat but do not need a broad menu of advanced features.

Before buying

Confirm whether the package includes the charger and heads you need, how the heated function affects battery life, and whether the device can be used comfortably with one hand. The $279.99 figure is a volatile US manufacturer price, not a permanent worldwide price.

4. LifePro Sonic: the budget entry point

WIRED’s 2026 roundup names the LifePro Sonic its budget pick. The available summary does not establish a complete set of independently verified numbers for its weight, amplitude, speed range, attachments or runtime, so the right way to evaluate it is to compare the current listing against your minimum requirements.

What to verify on the current listing

  • Actual weight with the battery installed.
  • Number and type of included heads.
  • Lowest and highest intensity settings and how they are labeled.
  • Rated runtime and charging connector.
  • Return policy, warranty length and replacement-head availability.

Why a budget pick can be sensible

If you are unsure whether you will use a massage gun regularly, a lower-cost model reduces the initial commitment. The important test is whether the grip, noise, pressure control and included heads make short sessions comfortable. A low price is not proof of poor performance, but it also is not proof that the device matches a premium model.

What published specifications can—and cannot—tell you

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparisons provide useful context for the range of specifications found in this category. These figures belong to the models named in that comparison and should not be reassigned to the four picks above.

The comparison illustrates why model names and units matter. “Hypervolt 2” is not the same product as “Hypervolt 2 Pro,” and RPM and PPM should not be treated as a single universal scale.

Massage-gun safety and sensible use

Massage guns are consumer percussion devices, not diagnostic tools. Follow the exact instructions for your model and stop if you experience sharp pain, numbness, unusual swelling, dizziness or skin irritation.

When to ask a clinician first

  • You have a recent injury, surgery or unexplained pain.
  • You have a condition affecting circulation, sensation, bones, joints or nerves.
  • You take medication or have another health concern that makes forceful massage uncertain.
  • You are unsure whether a painful area is muscle tissue or something else.

Therabody publishes model-family precautions and contraindications and advises consulting a medical professional when relevant concerns or conditions apply. The safest interpretation is conservative: do not use percussion to self-treat a suspected medical problem without qualified advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical technique

  1. Read the model’s manual and start at the lowest comfortable setting.
  2. Keep the attachment moving over soft tissue instead of holding it on one point for a prolonged period.
  3. Avoid direct pressure on the spine, front of the neck, joints, bones, open wounds and areas of reduced sensation.
  4. Use only the heads and heat or cold functions approved for that body area.
  5. Stop when the sensation becomes painful rather than assuming more force produces a better result.

What the exercise context means

Outpatient orthopedic and pediatric physical therapist Jacklyn Plonski told WIRED: “As we exercise, we cause breakdown within the muscle fibers, which in turn stimulates muscle growth and regrowth, hypertrophy, and strength.” That comment explains the exercise-recovery context; it is not a recommendation for any particular listed device and does not mean a massage gun builds muscle by itself.

A simple decision framework

  1. Choose Hypervolt 2 if you want the roundup’s general-use choice and a conventional full-size format.
  2. Choose Theragun PRO Plus if you will use its heat, LED, vibration and optional cold functions enough to justify the $649.99 US manufacturer-page price.
  3. Choose Theragun Mini Plus if carrying convenience is the deciding factor and the $279.99 US manufacturer-page price fits your budget.
  4. Choose LifePro Sonic if you want the roundup’s lower-cost option and the current listing meets your requirements for weight, heads, runtime and warranty.
  5. Investigate Bob and Brad Q2 Mini as a portable alternative if none of the four formats suits your travel or handling needs.

Before checkout, compare the exact model number, included attachments, charger, warranty and return terms for your region. Those details can change even when the product name remains the same.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
