The best 3D printing pen depends on its user and the plastic it accepts: choose a low-temperature, model-specific system for a child, or a standard thermoplastic pen with adjustable controls for more hands-on work. A “3D pen printer” is a handheld extrusion tool, not a desktop printer. You guide its filament as it comes out to draw, build shapes or add material to a compatible printed object. No universal winner is established by independent head-to-head testing.
How a 3D printing pen works
A typical pen feeds filament through a heated body and extrudes it from a nozzle. The strand cools and solidifies, letting you trace a flat design, build up a form or add plastic to an existing object. How to pick between them
- For a child, start with the exact model’s age guidance, safety instructions and refill system; a low-temperature design does not remove the need for supervision.
- For a maker, prioritize filament compatibility and controls. Adjustable temperature, feed-speed control and a display can help manage material and flow; MYNT3D documents these controls on its Professional model.
- For repair work, choose a pen and filament compatible with the plastic of the object. A pen’s general ability to extrude plastic does not guarantee that the added material will bond well to every printed part.
What filament do 3D pens use?
It depends on the pen. Standard pens may accept PLA or ABS, while some low-temperature children’s systems use a distinct material. The product name alone is not enough to identify compatible refills: check the exact model’s instructions and specified filament.

Filament type and diameter are model-specific. Using an incompatible refill can cause poor operation or damage, so verify both before purchasing.
Are 3D pens safe for kids?
Safety depends on the particular pen, its temperature design and how it is used. Conventional filament pens heat material and have hot components. Follow the age guidance and safety instructions supplied with the exact pen, and supervise children as directed. 3Doodler explicitly recommends adult supervision for Start+, despite its low-temperature design. Keep fingers away from the nozzle and freshly extruded material, and use a suitable work surface. For drawing, 3Doodler recommends a non-stick mat or smooth, heat-resistant surface.
Can you use a 3D pen to repair a 3D print?
Yes, a compatible pen can add material to fill a gap or reinforce a printed object. 3Doodler describes these repair and reinforcement uses, but advises matching the filament to the source object’s material. 3Doodler’s FAQ on repairs and materials.

Compatibility is essential: identify the plastic used for the part and select a pen that can feed that material. A mismatch may not adhere reliably, and the pen is a manual way to add material—not a guarantee that a damaged part will regain its original strength.
