WhatsApp for Mac does not use one universal folder for every installation. Files you explicitly save go to the destination selected in WhatsApp or to your normal Downloads folder, while media that you only open is kept in WhatsApp’s cache. On current sandboxed macOS installations, application data may also appear in the shared container ~/Library/Group Containers/group.net.whatsapp.WhatsApp.shared/, where a technical reference identifies Message/Media/ and ChatStorage.sqlite. That path is implementation-specific and can change with a future WhatsApp build.
For safe cleanup, quit WhatsApp, copy anything you need, inspect files before deleting, remove only identified media or cache content, and leave message databases such as ChatStorage.sqlite (plus its .sqlite-wal and .sqlite-shm companions) untouched. Reopen WhatsApp and verify your chats and saved files before emptying the Trash.
Which folder should you check first?
The right location depends on what you mean by a “WhatsApp file.” A photo saved through WhatsApp is different from a photo that was merely opened, and both differ from WhatsApp’s internal message database.
Files you deliberately saved
WhatsApp states that its Mac app behaves like any other application and that the save destination depends on your settings. Check WhatsApp’s configured download or save folder first. If you have not selected a custom location, also inspect your user Downloads folder. Finder’s Recents view can help locate recently saved photos, videos, PDFs and other attachments, but the original folder remains the authoritative location.

Media that you opened but did not download
Opening an image, video, document or voice note does not necessarily create a permanent copy in your chosen folder. WhatsApp says media that has been opened but not downloaded is stored in its cache folder. Cache content is temporary and may be recreated; it should not be treated as your archive of saved files.
WhatsApp’s shared container
Sandboxed macOS apps commonly keep shared data under ~/Library/Group Containers/<application-group-id>. A maintained technical reference identifies this WhatsApp group container:
~/Library/Group Containers/group.net.whatsapp.WhatsApp.shared/
Within that container, the reference lists Message/Media/ for media and ChatStorage.sqlite for message history. Treat the group identifier and subfolders as build-sensitive implementation details, not a permanent public API. A new WhatsApp release or a different distribution channel may use another layout.

Application caches
macOS conventionally stores an app’s cache under ~/Library/Caches/<bundle identifier>. Apple describes caches as purgeable data that an app must be able to recreate. The exact WhatsApp bundle identifier and cache subfolders can vary, so inspect names and contents rather than deleting every folder that happens to contain “WhatsApp.”
Application Support data
Persistent app-support files conventionally live under ~/Library/Application Support/<bundle identifier>. This area can contain indexes, preferences or other state in addition to media. Do not remove an entire Application Support directory simply because it is large; identify disposable media or cache files inside it.
How to find the files in Finder
- Quit WhatsApp first. Choose WhatsApp → Quit or press Command-Q. Confirm that the app is no longer running before inspecting or moving its files.
- Open a specific location. In Finder, press Shift-Command-G to open Go to Folder. Enter one path at a time, beginning with the folder where WhatsApp is configured to save downloads, then
~/Downloads, and finally the group-container path if you need to diagnose internal storage. - Reveal hidden Library folders. The tilde in a path means your home folder. You can also choose Go → Library in Finder while holding the Option key, then open Group Containers, Caches or Application Support.
- Sort before acting. Use list view and enable the Size and Date Modified columns. Large recent files are often downloaded videos, while many small files may be thumbnails or cache entries. Open a file or use Get Info to confirm what it is before moving it.
- Separate saved copies from internal copies. A file in Downloads or another folder you selected is a user-facing copy. A similarly named item inside a cache or
Message/Media/directory may be an internal copy linked to a chat. Keep the copy you actually need before deleting duplicates.
What the important WhatsApp files do
Message/Media/
The technical path reference associates this directory with WhatsApp media. It may include images, videos, documents, audio and voice-note data used by the Mac client. Names and subfolder structure are not guaranteed to remain the same across updates. Remove individual, clearly identified media only when you understand that doing so can make that attachment unavailable locally.

ChatStorage.sqlite is identified as message history. It is not a cache and should not be deleted as a routine space-saving measure. Removing it can erase or destabilize local conversation data, depending on the app’s current synchronization and recovery behavior.

.sqlite-wal and .sqlite-shm files
SQLite databases can use write-ahead-log and shared-memory companions. A related technical reference warns that ChatStorage.sqlite-wal and ChatStorage.sqlite-shm may contain newer transactions associated with the main database. Deleting one without the others can leave an inconsistent database. Leave all three files alone unless you are following a documented forensic or full-reset procedure and have a verified backup.
Cache files
Cache files are intended to be reproducible. Deleting an identified cache after quitting WhatsApp is generally lower risk than deleting persistent app data, but it can remove locally available previews and force WhatsApp to download or rebuild them later. “Lower risk” does not mean “no impact”: verify that you are working in a cache directory and not a database or media archive.
Safe manual deletion procedure
- Decide what must remain available. Make a short list of photos, videos, documents, recordings and chats you still need. If a file exists only inside WhatsApp, copy it to a normal user folder or a backup destination before cleanup.
- Back up before touching internal data. A backup of exported attachments protects the files you care about. If local message history matters, preserve the entire WhatsApp data area rather than selecting database files for deletion.
- Quit WhatsApp completely. Use WhatsApp → Quit or Command-Q. Do not manually delete files while the app is writing to them.
- Inspect one directory at a time. Use Finder’s Go to Folder and review the configured save folder,
~/Downloads, the shared container, caches and Application Support locations separately. Sort by size and modification date, and confirm file types. - Choose the narrowest target. Prefer a single unwanted video, an identified media subfolder or a cache directory. Avoid selecting the entire
Group Containersdirectory or an entire WhatsApp Application Support directory. - Move items to the Trash first. Moving rather than immediately deleting preserves a recovery path. Keep the Trash until WhatsApp has been tested after relaunch.
- Relaunch and verify. Open WhatsApp, check several chats, open a few remaining attachments and confirm that your intentionally saved files still open from their normal folders.
- Empty the Trash only after verification. Emptying it makes recovery considerably harder. If something is missing, restore the item from Trash or your backup before continuing.
Use WhatsApp’s own storage controls when available
An in-app storage or media-management screen is preferable to manual path surgery because it can distinguish conversation records from attachments. WhatsApp product information describes workflows that delete large files or media while retaining chat history in supported releases. The exact menu and rollout can vary, so look in WhatsApp’s settings or a chat’s details for storage, media or large-file controls. If the option is present, review each item and export anything important before confirming deletion.

In-app deletion is also more portable across versions: it is less dependent on a particular group-container identifier and is more likely to update WhatsApp’s indexes cleanly. Manual Finder cleanup remains useful for a known cache or for files that were saved outside WhatsApp, but it should be the exception when an equivalent in-app control exists.

Finding what is consuming space with macOS Storage
Open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Storage. Apple’s Storage view presents categories and, in some cases, controls for opening or deleting files. The categories and controls vary by macOS version, so use it as a discovery and verification aid rather than assuming it can manage every WhatsApp directory.
If Storage shows a large application or document category, open the available detail view and identify the actual files before removing anything. A category total can include more than WhatsApp, and deleting a visible item may not remove an internal cache until the app is quit or restarted. Recheck the free-space figure after cleanup and then verify WhatsApp itself.

“I cannot find the WhatsApp folder in Library.”
The user Library is hidden by default, the app may be installed under a different channel, or the current build may use a different container identifier. Use Finder’s Shift-Command-G with the full group-container path, and check WhatsApp’s configured save folder and Downloads first. Do not infer that no folder exists merely because a search for the word “WhatsApp” returns nothing.

“The path exists, but it is smaller than expected.”
Some media may already have been purged from cache, saved elsewhere, or remain only on the linked phone or service. A local Mac copy is not automatically the same object as a copy on another device or in cloud-linked history.

“I deleted files and the space did not return.”
Files in Trash still consume disk space until Trash is emptied. Storage calculations can also lag while macOS rescans. Wait for the Storage view to update, then confirm that the intended files—not a database or unrelated directory—were moved.
“Chats or attachments look different after cleanup.”
Stop deleting and check the Trash and your backup. Restore any removed media or database companion files before reopening WhatsApp repeatedly. If a database was altered, a clean recovery may require restoring the preserved WhatsApp data or using the app’s supported account and backup recovery process.
“Can I delete the whole Group Containers folder?”
No. The group directory can contain settings, media indexes and local databases together. Removing it is a broad reset, not cache maintenance, and can destroy local message history or make the client rebuild from an incomplete state.
How to prevent WhatsApp storage from growing again
- Choose a deliberate save destination in WhatsApp so permanent copies do not become mixed with temporary cache data.
- Periodically review large videos and documents in the app’s storage controls, when those controls are available.
- Move important attachments to an ordinary, backed-up folder and treat WhatsApp’s internal media area as working storage.
- Use macOS Storage to spot unusually large categories, then identify the underlying files before acting.
- Keep a current backup before any cleanup that involves more than clearly disposable cache files.
What deletion means across devices
Removing a local Mac copy does not necessarily delete the same media from your phone or from cloud-linked history. The result depends on whether the item was a separately saved file, an internal cache object, or data synchronized by the account. Before deleting, decide whether you are reclaiming Mac disk space, removing an attachment from a conversation, or trying to erase every copy. Those are different operations and may require different controls.
