Safe House (2012) was filmed mainly in Cape Town, South Africa, with additional production in downtown Washington, DC. Cape Town supplied the film’s principal South African setting and major action work; the US shoot covered streets around federal buildings and museums. The documented rooftop-chase location is Langa, a Cape Town township.
The short answer
Daniel Espinosa’s 2012 action thriller used two principal filming regions. Cape Town was the production’s main base, while Washington, DC provided a secondary American shoot. A South African government-hosted University of Pretoria study identifies a series of Cape Town-area locations, and the DC Film Office recorded filming on several downtown avenues.
| Filming region | Role in the production | Locations specifically documented |
|---|---|---|
| Cape Town, South Africa | Principal filming area and the production’s South African visual world | Western Boulevard, Adderley Street, Langa, Green Point Stadium, Table Mountain, Table Bay, Paarl Mountains, Lion’s Head and Clifton’s beaches |
| Washington, DC, United States | Additional downtown filming near civic landmarks | Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Street, near federal buildings and museums |
The evidence does not provide a shot-by-shot map. The Cape Town study lists places associated with the production, but it does not prove that every listed landmark appears as a clearly recognizable establishing shot. Treat the list as a record of filming locations, not a guaranteed on-screen checklist.

The clearest scene-specific connections are the car chase on Western Boulevard and Adderley Street and the rooftop-chase material filmed in Langa. For the other listed places, the records establish an association with the production without saying exactly what viewers should look for in a particular shot.

Why Cape Town is the main answer
The film’s story is set in South Africa, and Cape Town was the central production base used to create that setting. The DC Film Office said the majority of filming had taken place in South Africa before documenting the Washington work. That distinction matters: Washington was genuinely used for photography, but it was not the production’s primary location.
Cape Town also offered the road network and varied terrain needed for the film’s large action sequences. Director Daniel Espinosa said the production received permission to close major highways for “a couple of weeks” and to stage a large sequence in the city center. His comment describes the 2012 shoot; it is not a statement that those roads can be closed or used in the same way today.
For viewers comparing the movie’s geography with its production footprint, the useful summary is therefore not “Cape Town or Washington?” but “Cape Town first, Washington as an additional location.” The US streets confirm that the crew filmed in the capital, while the DC Film Office’s own description of the production makes clear that most filming was in South Africa.
Cape Town locations associated with Safe House
Western Boulevard and Adderley Street
The University of Pretoria study reports that a car chase was filmed on Western Boulevard and Adderley Street. These streets are therefore the strongest specifically attributed Cape Town locations for the film’s driving action. The sources do not establish the exact direction of travel, individual intersections, or which cuts in the finished chase correspond to each road.
Because the sequence was filmed on operating urban highways, present-day views may differ from the 2012 production. Road layouts, traffic controls, construction and surrounding buildings can change, and a modern visitor should not assume that a current street view will match the frame exactly.
Espinosa’s account adds a sense of the scale involved: he said the crew was permitted to shut down major Cape Town highways for a couple of weeks. That is a production-period detail, not a guide to present-day road access. A film crew can arrange controlled closures through permissions and traffic management; an ordinary visitor should not expect to stop on a carriageway, recreate a driving shot, or use a location in a way that interferes with traffic.
Langa and the rooftop chase
Langa is listed in the Cape Town location study, and Universal’s home-video announcement gives it a more specific connection: the rooftop-chase feature was filmed in Langa. If you are looking for the documented answer to “Where was the Safe House rooftop chase filmed?”, Langa is the supported location.
The wording matters. The source identifies Langa as the setting for the rooftop-chase material, but it does not identify every roof, route or property used. Rooftops are often private or difficult to access, so the production reference should not be treated as permission to enter buildings or climb structures.
The distributor’s description of a dedicated rooftop-chase extra is useful because it ties the location to a production feature rather than merely repeating a broad list of Cape Town sites. Even so, it does not turn the sequence into a precise walking route. It names the area, not a public viewing point or an address that visitors can safely approach.

Green Point Stadium
Green Point Stadium appears in the study’s list of Cape Town-area locations. The available evidence does not assign it a particular scene or identify a clearly visible shot. It is best described as a reported production location rather than as a landmark that viewers can definitely recognize in the finished film.
Table Mountain and Table Bay
The same study names Table Mountain and Table Bay among the locations associated with the production. Their inclusion confirms that the Cape Town landscape was part of the location record, but the study does not say whether either appears in a sustained establishing shot, a background plate, or another form of photography.
Paarl Mountains, Lion’s Head and Clifton’s beaches
Paarl Mountains, Lion’s Head and Clifton’s beaches are also listed. These references broaden the production footprint beyond the central business district and Langa, yet no source supplied for the film provides a scene-by-scene breakdown for them. Avoid captions that claim a particular character or moment was filmed at one of these sites unless you have separate, scene-specific evidence.
What the Cape Town location list does—and does not—prove
A location list can record a filming area even when a landmark is not prominent on screen. Productions may use a road for a brief insert, capture background material that is heavily edited, or film on a nearby property that shares a landmark’s name. In this case, the study draws on earlier reporting cited in its notes, so its list is useful historical evidence but not a complete production map.
- Supported: these places are reported as associated with the Cape Town production.
- Strongly specific: Western Boulevard and Adderley Street are reported for a car chase, and Langa is identified for the rooftop-chase feature.
- Not established: the exact shot, address, camera position or current accessibility for every listed site.
This is why it helps to distinguish three different questions. “Was the film made in Cape Town?” has a clear yes: Cape Town was the primary filming area. “Was a particular action sequence filmed there?” also has specific answers for the car chase and Langa rooftop feature. “Can I identify every landmark in the finished movie?” is not answered by the location list alone. The study does not make a scene-by-scene comparison, and the distributor’s feature descriptions provide detail for only some production elements.
The list also should not be read as a complete itinerary. It records sites associated with filming, not necessarily locations that sit near one another, are open to visitors, or can be viewed from a public place. A named mountain, beach or stadium may be a useful geographic clue without being a confirmed stop for fans.

The DC Film Office documented a downtown Washington shoot near federal buildings and museums. The named streets were Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Street.
Constitution Avenue
Constitution Avenue runs through Washington’s civic core and is lined by major federal and museum destinations. The Film Office’s announcement places the production in this downtown area, but it does not assign a particular scene to a specific block.
Independence Avenue
Independence Avenue was another recorded filming street. As with Constitution Avenue, the available announcement confirms production activity rather than providing a frame-by-frame guide to the finished movie.

Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Street
Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Street complete the set of streets named by the DC Film Office. Together, these references establish a real Washington component to the shoot, but they should not be confused with evidence that the film was primarily made in the US.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The practical comparison is geographic: Cape Town was the principal base and supplied the South African environment; Washington contributed additional downtown footage. Neither source establishes a complete list of every Washington address used by the crew.
For a location-minded viewer, the DC street names are a useful starting point, but not a guarantee that a scene can be traced to a single corner. The announcement records filming in the downtown area near federal buildings and museums. It does not say which avenue corresponds to a particular character’s appearance, chase beat or establishing view, nor does it provide a route that can be followed as a film tour.
The safe house itself was partly a set
Not every interior associated with the title was an existing house that visitors can locate. Universal described a Blu-ray feature that walks through the safe-house location and discusses its design with production designer Brigitte Broch and technical adviser Luis Falcon III. The description identifies a purpose-built set.
That means a viewer should separate “where the film was shot” into two categories: real exterior locations and constructed interiors. The sources do not establish that the safe-house set remains in place, that it was open to the public, or that it can be visited today. A listing that presents it as a standing Cape Town attraction would go beyond the documented evidence.
The home-video description makes the set worth noting, but it is not evidence of a preserved studio installation or a public attraction. If your interest is the architecture of the safe house, the production feature may provide a more reliable way to see how the environment was designed than trying to find a real-world address. The source does not identify a visitor venue or say that the set still exists.
How the major action scenes were staged
Highway closures
Espinosa’s contemporaneous interview provides useful production context. He said the crew was allowed to shut down major Cape Town highways for a couple of weeks and referred to the roads as “the main highways.” This helps explain why the film’s driving footage has the scale of a real urban pursuit rather than a sequence assembled entirely from small inserts.
More than 40 stunt drivers
In another interview, Espinosa said the moving-car sequence used more than 40 stunt drivers. He also remarked, “You can’t fake that gravity, though,” describing the physical demands of staging the action. The figure is a production detail for this sequence, not a general statistic about the film industry or a measurement of the number of vehicles visible in any one shot.
These comments do not alter the location answer, but they explain why Western Boulevard and Adderley Street are significant. The roads were not merely visual backdrops; they were part of a coordinated, high-risk action operation that required substantial traffic control and specialist driving.

They also help put the location references in context. A large moving-car sequence depends on more than a recognizable street: it involves road control and specialist driving, and the director’s account describes both an extended highway closure and a sizeable stunt-driver team. The exact blocking and route are not given, so these production details should not be used to infer a precise path through the city.
How to investigate the locations today
If you want to compare the movie with its real settings, use the following method rather than assuming that every scenic view is an exact match.
- Start with the documented core. Prioritize Cape Town, then check Western Boulevard and Adderley Street for the road-chase connection. Treat Langa as the documented rooftop-chase area.
- Separate confirmed scenes from reported sites. Keep the car chase and Langa rooftop feature in the “specific” category. Keep Green Point Stadium, Table Mountain, Table Bay, Paarl Mountains, Lion’s Head and Clifton’s beaches in the broader location list unless another source identifies a particular shot.
- Use the Washington streets as a second region. Check Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Street as the documented DC filming area, not as a complete address list.
- Compare dates and road layouts. Historical filming occurred in 2012. Current street furniture, lane markings, construction and building surroundings may not match the film.
- Verify access before visiting. Check current rules with municipal authorities, stadium or beach operators, property owners and local guides. A filming reference does not grant access to a private roof, roadway or facility.
- Do not plan around the safe-house set. The production feature describes a set, and no source establishes that it survives or is open to visitors.
For a more careful comparison, first note what you are trying to verify: a named filming area, a particular scene, or a place you can visit. The records answer those questions to different degrees. Cape Town and Washington are established production regions; the specific road chase and Langa rooftop material have stronger scene connections; current entry rules and visitor access require fresh confirmation. Keeping those categories separate makes it less likely that an old filming credit will be mistaken for a modern travel recommendation.

The locations are historical facts, not a ready-made tour itinerary. Streets named in a production announcement remain public infrastructure subject to current traffic rules, events and construction. Langa rooftops and other buildings may be private, occupied or unsafe to approach without permission. Beaches, stadium grounds and mountain areas can have their own opening hours, access controls and weather risks.

No particular tour operator or visitor service is established by the production records. If you want to book a guided visit, verify the provider, route, current permissions and whether the sites are actually included. Do not assume that a guide can enter a private building or arrange access to an active roadway just because it was used during filming.
What the home-video extras can add
Universal’s 2012 home-video announcement promoted production extras including a making-of feature, material about filming in Cape Town, the Langa rooftop chase and a walk-through of the safe-house location. Those features can help viewers connect the finished scenes with the production’s locations and sets.
Because the announcement dates from 2012, check the exact edition before buying or borrowing a disc. Bonus contents, regional releases, stock and playback formats can differ, and the announcement does not guarantee that every later edition contains the same material.

A disc is therefore a possible source of behind-the-scenes context, not a replacement for a current map or a travel-access check. The most relevant extras described by Universal are the Cape Town material, the rooftop-chase feature and the safe-house set walk-through. Confirm that a specific Blu-ray or DVD edition includes the feature you want before purchasing; the 2012 announcement alone does not verify current stock or the contents of every release.

Bottom line on the real locations
Cape Town is the answer to the main question: it was the primary filming base for Safe House. The documented Cape Town footprint includes the Western Boulevard and Adderley Street car-chase route, Langa for the rooftop-chase feature, and a wider group of reported sites including Green Point Stadium, Table Mountain, Table Bay, the Paarl Mountains, Lion’s Head and Clifton’s beaches. Washington, DC was used for additional downtown filming on Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Street. The safe-house interior was at least partly a constructed set, so not every setting in the film corresponds to a visitable real building.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Safe House filmed in Cape Town?
Yes. Cape Town was the film’s principal filming area. The DC Film Office said most filming had taken place in South Africa before documenting an additional downtown Washington shoot.
Where was the Safe House rooftop chase filmed?
Universal’s home-video announcement identifies Langa as the location for the rooftop-chase feature. It does not name a specific roof or establish public access to any property.
Was Safe House filmed in Washington, DC?
Yes. The DC Film Office recorded filming downtown near federal buildings and museums, including Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Street. Washington was an additional location, not the main production base.
Where was the Safe House car chase filmed?
A South African government-hosted University of Pretoria study reports that a car chase was filmed on Western Boulevard and Adderley Street in Cape Town. It does not map the exact route or match individual shots to particular intersections.
Can you visit the Safe House itself?
The safe-house environment was at least partly a purpose-built set, according to Universal’s description of a set walk-through feature. The description does not establish that the set remains or is open to visitors.
Are all the listed Cape Town landmarks clearly visible in the movie?
Not necessarily. Green Point Stadium, Table Mountain, Table Bay, the Paarl Mountains, Lion’s Head and Clifton’s beaches are listed as locations associated with the production, but the location study does not connect each one to a clearly identifiable scene.
The Bottom Line
Safe House was filmed mainly in Cape Town, with additional downtown filming in Washington, DC. The most specific Cape Town scene connections are the Western Boulevard and Adderley Street car chase and the Langa rooftop-chase feature. Other Cape Town-area landmarks are reported production locations, but their exact on-screen appearances are not mapped. The safe-house interior was at least partly a set, and present-day access to any location should be checked independently.
