For viewers in the United States, there is no single service that reliably carries every Law & Order episode and spin-off. Hulu has historically been the better place to check for the original series, including its classic run. Peacock is the key destination for newer NBC episodes and much of the franchise, particularly Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU). A free, ad-supported Law & Order channel was also announced for several connected-TV and streaming platforms, while the original 20-season run is available on DVD.
Catalog rights change, and the exact season you want matters more than the service name. Use the guide below to identify the right series, compare likely coverage, and verify the live listing before subscribing or beginning a long watch-through.
First, identify which Law & Order you mean
“Law & Order” can refer to several separate series. A search for the franchise name may return only one of them, so confirm the full title before judging whether a service has what you want.

A later revival continued the original format and is listed in some catalogs as seasons 21 and higher.
- Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: The long-running SVU spin-off has its own season numbering and catalog page.
- Law & Order: Criminal Intent: This is a separate ten-season series.
- Law & Order: Organized Crime: Another spin-off with separate availability and season numbering.
A service can carry the original series while omitting SVU, or offer SVU while missing earlier original episodes. Search the exact title and season, not just “Law & Order.”

Peacock: the main destination for newer NBC episodes
Peacock is the most important service to check when you want current NBC episodes or several Law & Order spin-offs. Its franchise guide published March 11, 2025 listed the original series from seasons 13–24, all 26 seasons of SVU, all ten seasons of Criminal Intent, and the first four seasons of Organized Crime. Those figures describe that dated guide; they are not a promise that the same seasons remain available in October 2026.
Current SVU timing
Peacock’s SVU page, checked October 11, 2026, says season 28 premiered on October 8, 2026 and that new episodes stream the next day. That next-day arrangement is the clearest reason to choose Peacock if your priority is keeping up with new NBC broadcasts rather than watching only the classic episodes.
What Peacock may not guarantee
The service’s catalog can change by season and series. A U.S. availability directory checked October 11, 2026 reported an October 14 Peacock Premium availability date for the original series, suggesting that its Peacock listing was in transition around that time. Treat that report as a prompt to check the live Peacock title page, not as a permanent entitlement.

Peacock’s historical guide also grouped a wide range of seasons under one franchise page. Before paying, open the specific show page and expand the season selector. Confirm that the season number and episode list match the episodes you intend to watch.
Hulu: the strongest place to check the classic original series
Hulu has traditionally been the first service to check for the original Law & Order, especially its earlier seasons. A July 2025 comparison reported seasons 1–20 on Hulu. That is useful evidence of the catalog split that viewers have encountered, but it is a dated comparison rather than a guarantee of the October 2026 lineup.
Rank #2
The same title can appear differently depending on current rights, so use Hulu’s in-app search and season selector. Hulu’s own help guidance tells subscribers to check its library and availability resources for a specific title and the latest seasons. If a season page appears but episodes are locked, unavailable, or limited to a different plan, read the entitlement message before starting a subscription.
When Hulu is the better first check
- You want the original series from its early seasons.
- You are planning a chronological watch of the classic 20-season run.
- You do not need next-day access to new NBC episodes.
Do not infer that Hulu carries every spin-off because it lists the original series. Search SVU, Criminal Intent, and Organized Crime separately.
Free, ad-supported Law & Order channels
NBCUniversal announced on September 9, 2025 that a free, ad-supported Law & Order channel launched in the United States with seasons 5–10. The launch platforms named in the announcement were LG Channels, Pluto TV, Prime Video, The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, and Xumo Play. The announcement said additional seasons would be added later.
This is a linear channel, not necessarily an on-demand library. You may have to watch the episode scheduled in the live guide rather than select any episode instantly. Platform lineups and the channel’s season rotation can differ, and the 2025 launch lineup does not establish what each service carries in October 2026.
How to check the free channel
- Open the live-TV or free-streaming guide on your chosen platform.
- Search for “Law & Order” and confirm that the result is the dedicated channel, not an individual paid episode.
- Read the current schedule to see which season is airing.
- Check whether the platform offers replay or only a live feed.
Free access is most useful when you are happy to watch selected episodes as scheduled. It is less suitable for a precise season-by-season marathon.
Physical media: the complete original run on DVD
Universal Pictures At Home lists Law & Order: The Complete Original Series on DVD, covering seasons 1–20. This gives you ownership of the classic run without depending on a streaming catalog or an internet connection.
The set covers the original series only. It does not include the 2022 revival, SVU, Criminal Intent, Organized Crime, or every other franchise entry. Check the edition description and included season range before buying, especially if you are trying to continue beyond season 20.
When DVD makes sense
- You want all original seasons 1–20 in one collection.
- You expect to rewatch the series over several years.
- You want protection from streaming removals or changing rights.
DVD is less convenient than streaming for mobile viewing and usually requires a compatible disc drive, but it is the most stable option for the original run identified in the listing.
Season coverage at a glance
| Option | What published information establishes | Best use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hulu | A July 2025 comparison reported original seasons 1–20. | Checking classic original episodes. | Verify the exact season in Hulu’s current library; rights can change. |
| Peacock | A March 2025 franchise guide listed original seasons 13–24, 26 SVU seasons, ten Criminal Intent seasons, and four Organized Crime seasons. | Newer NBC episodes and broad franchise coverage. | The guide is historical, and a directory reported a Peacock Premium transition date around October 14, 2026 for the original series. |
| Free ad-supported channel | The September 2025 launch announcement specified seasons 5–10. | Watching scheduled episodes without a subscription. | Current schedules and later additions vary by platform. |
| DVD | The listed complete original-series set covers seasons 1–20. | Owning the classic run. | It does not include the revival or spin-offs. |
Choose the option that fits your watch plan
If you want the earliest original episodes
Start with Hulu’s current listing and look for seasons 1–20 individually. If any season is missing or you want guaranteed access to the whole original run, compare the DVD set instead of assuming another streaming service will fill the gap.
If you want the newest episodes
Use Peacock for NBC titles, particularly SVU. The service states that new SVU episodes arrive the day after broadcast. Search for the current season page rather than relying on an older franchise count.
If you want several spin-offs
Peacock has the strongest documented franchise footprint, but the published counts are from March 2025. Search each spin-off separately and verify the latest season available before subscribing.
If you want to spend nothing
Check the dedicated free channel on Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, LG Channels, Prime Video, Samsung TV Plus, or Xumo Play. Expect a scheduled feed and advertising, and confirm the current season rotation in the platform’s live guide.
If you want a permanent collection
The DVD set is the documented ownership option for the original seasons 1–20. It is not a complete franchise collection.
How to verify availability before you subscribe
- Write down the exact target: for example, “original series season 4,” “SVU season 28,” or “Organized Crime season 2.”
- Search the full title: distinguish the original from SVU and the other spin-offs.
- Open the season selector: do not rely on a search result that shows only one episode or a trailer.
- Check episode numbers and dates: make sure the listing includes the episodes you expect, especially near a season boundary.
- Read the access label: identify whether the episode is included, requires a particular plan, available to buy, or temporarily unavailable.
- Recheck immediately before paying: catalog rights and channel schedules can change after a guide or comparison was published.
This process matters because historical reports show a real split: Hulu was reported to carry the original seasons 1–20, while Peacock’s legacy listing began at season 13. Neither pattern should be treated as a permanent catalog rule.

Problem: You expect to select any episode, but the service provides a linear feed. Fix: inspect the live schedule and determine whether replay is offered.
Buying the DVD set for the wrong series
Problem: The original-series collection does not contain SVU, the revival, or other spin-offs. Fix: verify that the product says seasons 1–20 of the original series before ordering.

Bottom line
Check Hulu first for classic original episodes, Peacock first for current NBC episodes and much of the spin-off franchise, and the free ad-supported channel when a scheduled stream is acceptable. For a dependable collection of the original seasons 1–20, the DVD set is the documented ownership alternative. Because the available seasons are time-sensitive, verify the exact series and season in the live catalog on the day you subscribe.
