For most newcomers, start with Silent Hill 2 (the 2024 remake) on PlayStation 5 or PC. It is a modern, self-contained story with current-platform support, expanded areas, an over-the-shoulder camera, revised combat and new cut-scenes. You do not need to know the earlier games to understand it.
Choose the 1999 Silent Hill instead if you specifically want to begin with the series’ first release and can access compatible legacy hardware. If your priority is the connected storyline involving Silent Hill 3, play the original Silent Hill first. Silent Hill f is another legitimate entry point for readers who want a standalone story set in Japan, while Silent Hill: The Short Message is a free, short PS5 introduction rather than a replacement for a full game.

Which Silent Hill game should you play first?
The best default is Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake). Konami describes it as a full remake of the 2001 Silent Hill 2, and the remake is available for PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam. Its independent story makes it easier to enter than a game whose impact depends on knowing earlier events. The 2025 GamesRadar+ beginner’s guide also presents the remake as an easy way to start.

The right first title depends on four things: the hardware you can use, whether you prefer modern or original presentation, whether you want the first game’s story context, and whether the setting or premise matters more to you than release order.

Why Silent Hill 2 (2024) is the safest first choice
It is designed as a full remake, not a continuation
The remake reworks the original Silent Hill 2, which first released on PlayStation 2 in 2001. Konami’s product information identifies the 2024 version as a full remake. You are therefore beginning with a complete story rather than joining an ongoing plot at a later chapter.
The development team described the project as “a remake with respect toward the original” in a PlayStation Blog development article. That is the team’s characterization, not an independent review score, but it explains the intended balance: the remake modernizes the presentation while retaining the identity of the 2001 game.
Modernized presentation lowers the entry barrier
The remake adds or changes several parts of the experience:

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Expanded areas give locations more room to explore than in the original.
- An over-the-shoulder camera replaces the older fixed-view approach.
- Combat has been revised for the modern presentation.
- New cut-scenes add material around the existing story.
These changes do not make the game a beginner tutorial, and it remains a horror game built around uncertainty. They do mean that someone buying a current release does not have to adapt to 2001-era camera design or locate old hardware before trying the series.
Platforms, date and editions
Konami’s product page lists the remake for PlayStation 5 and PC/Steam, with a release date of 8 October 2024. Konami’s U.S. announcement states that physical and digital editions were offered. Current stock, regional formats and edition names can change, so check the store listing in your country and make sure it identifies the 2024 remake, not the original PlayStation 2 release.
If you use PC, verify the current system requirements and storefront listing before buying. The available evidence establishes PC/Steam support, but it does not establish identical performance on every computer or every regional storefront.
When to begin with Silent Hill (1999)
Choose it for release-order context
The series began in 1999, according to Konami Group’s 2026 report. Playing that first game gives you the original release context, early design conventions and the starting point for the storyline that later matters to Silent Hill 3.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This is the right choice when “where do I start?” means “what was the first game?” rather than “what is easiest to access today.” It is also a sensible option for players who deliberately want to experience the franchise’s evolution instead of beginning with a modern remake.
Expect a hardware and availability hurdle
Konami’s European product page lists Silent Hill for PlayStation, PlayStation Vita and PSP. Those are legacy platform listings. They should not be read as a promise that the game can be downloaded on a current PlayStation console, that a particular digital store still sells it, or that every region has the same options.
The 2025 GamesRadar+ beginner’s guide likewise warns that the original games are less convenient to access on modern equipment. Before paying for a used copy, confirm all of the following:
- Your console or handheld can actually run that release, either natively or through an officially supported method.
- The disc or cartridge is compatible with your region and hardware revision.
- The seller identifies the game and edition accurately rather than using a remake image for a 1999 copy.
- You have a legal way to play it; avoid unverified downloads presented as official releases.
If those checks fail, beginning with the remake is the more practical option. You can still return to the 1999 game later for historical context.
The story-order exception: Silent Hill before Silent Hill 3
Most entries can be approached according to your interests, but Silent Hill 3 is the important story-order exception. If you want the connected narrative in the order it was established, play the original Silent Hill first and then Silent Hill 3.
Rank #3
- UK PSN account may be required for any online features
The available sources do not provide an official detailed story page for Silent Hill 3, so there is no need to treat it as a direct continuation of every other game in the franchise. The useful practical rule is narrower: do not begin with Silent Hill 3 when preserving the first game’s story context matters to you.
A practical order for story-focused players
- Play Silent Hill (1999), using compatible legacy hardware or a legitimate current release if one is available in your region.
- Play Silent Hill 3 after finishing the first game.
- Choose Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill f or another entry afterward based on setting and platform rather than trying to force every title into one uninterrupted plot.
This approach protects the one connection for which order is clearly important without making newcomers complete the entire catalogue before trying a different story.
Can you start with Silent Hill f?
Yes. Silent Hill f support information from Konami describes new characters and settings and says the game can be enjoyed by newcomers as well as returning players. That makes it a standalone starting point, not a title that requires the 1999 game or the Silent Hill 2 remake first.

Why its setting may be the deciding factor
Konami Group’s 2026 report identifies Silent Hill f as the first entry set in Japan. If the Japanese setting and a new cast appeal to you more than the franchise’s original American-town setting, that preference is a valid reason to start here.
The same report says the game launched in September 2025 and was the first new installment in twelve years. It also reports more than one million global sales within two days. That is a company-reported sales figure, not a measure of quality, difficulty or suitability for every player.
Current platforms
Konami’s support page lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Windows Store. Check the store page for your country because editions, language support and availability can differ by region.

- This is Korean Version released in Korea. Region free title so you can play it on your System.

- Having received a letter from his deceased wife, James heads to where they shared so many memories, in the hope of seeing her one more time: SILENT HILL. There, by the lake, he finds a woman eerily similar to her... "My name...is Maria," the woman smiles. Her face, her voice... She's just like her. Experience a master class in psychological survival horror―lauded as the best in the series―on the latest hardware with chilling visuals and visceral sounds.
Silent Hill f is an optional first game, not the modern default. The remake of Silent Hill 2 has stronger practical guidance for a general newcomer, while Silent Hill f is the better match when a standalone Japanese setting is your main reason for playing.
What is Silent Hill: The Short Message?
Silent Hill: The Short Message is a free, short-form introduction available on PS5, subject to regional availability. It is useful when you want to sample the series before committing to a full-length purchase, but it should not replace the main recommendation if you want a substantial first game.
Series producer Motoi Okamoto explained its purpose in a PlayStation Blog interview published 31 January 2024: “We’re releasing the whole game for free, so if you’ve never played a Silent Hill game before, we hope you’ll take this chance to get a taste of what Silent Hill is all about.”
Use it as a low-commitment test
- Open the PlayStation Store on your PS5.
- Search for the exact title, Silent Hill: The Short Message.
- Confirm that the listing is available in your region and shows the official publisher information.
- Download it and treat the experience as a short sample of the series’ mood and approach.
- If you want a longer, self-contained story afterward, move to Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) rather than assuming the short game covers the entire franchise.
How to choose among the starting points
Use these four questions before you decide. They separate practical constraints from taste, so you do not end up buying a game that fits the franchise but not your setup.
1. Which hardware do you already own?
- PS5 or a suitable PC: Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) is the most direct modern route.
- Xbox Series X|S: Silent Hill f is the clearly listed option among the recommended modern starting points.
- Only legacy PlayStation hardware: the 1999 game may be practical if you own compatible equipment and can obtain a legitimate copy.
- PS5 but no purchase commitment yet: try the free The Short Message where it is available.
2. Do you want original or modern presentation?
The 1999 game preserves the original release’s design and hardware context. The Silent Hill 2 remake provides an over-the-shoulder camera, revised combat, expanded areas and new cut-scenes. Neither preference is universally correct; choose whether historical authenticity or modern usability is more important to you.

3. Does the first game’s story context matter?
If yes, use the order Silent Hill then Silent Hill 3. If no, you can start with the self-contained Silent Hill 2 remake or Silent Hill f without completing earlier releases.

4. Which setting and premise interest you?
- Choose the remake for the modern version of the 2001 game’s story.
- Choose the original for the beginning of the franchise and its release-era presentation.
- Choose Silent Hill f for new characters and a Japanese setting.
- Choose The Short Message when your priority is sampling the atmosphere at no game price.
Recommended play paths for different newcomers
The simplest modern path
- Start with Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) on PS5 or PC.
- After finishing it, decide whether you want historical context with Silent Hill or a different setting with Silent Hill f.
This path avoids legacy-hardware issues and gives you a complete story immediately.
The historian’s path
- Begin with Silent Hill (1999).
- Continue to Silent Hill 3 while the first game’s context is fresh.
- Try the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake afterward to see how a later remake approaches modern presentation.
Use this only if you can access the first game legally and comfortably; forcing yourself through unavailable hardware is not a requirement for being a fan.
The setting-first path
- Start with Silent Hill f if its Japanese setting and new characters are your main interest.
- Move to the Silent Hill 2 remake when you want the modern version of the 2001 story.
Because Silent Hill f is described as welcoming to newcomers, this path does not depend on release order.
The try-before-you-buy path
- Download Silent Hill: The Short Message on PS5 if it is listed in your region.
- Use that short experience to decide whether the series’ horror style suits you.
- Choose Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) for a full modern game, or select another entry according to the priorities above.
Buying and platform checks that prevent common mistakes
Identify the exact version
Listings can use similar artwork and names. For the modern recommendation, look for Silent Hill 2 with the 2024 remake designation and PS5 or PC support. A listing for the 2001 PlayStation 2 original is a different product and will not provide the remake’s camera, combat changes or expanded areas.
Confirm your region
Konami’s product and support pages are regional. Storefront availability, physical stock, languages and age ratings can change between countries. Open the store page that serves your account rather than relying on a search result from another region.
Separate platform listing from guaranteed compatibility
The original game’s PlayStation, Vita and PSP entries are historical platform information. They do not automatically mean that a modern PS5 can run a disc or that a digital purchase remains available. Treat the listing as a starting point for checking compatibility, not as a promise of current support.
Do not use sales as a quality shortcut
The more-than-one-million figure for Silent Hill f describes global sales within two days, as reported by Konami Group in 2026. It does not establish that the game is easier, scarier, better reviewed or more suitable for you than the other starting points.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBottom line for a first playthrough
Start with Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) if you want the clearest modern route on PS5 or PC. Start with Silent Hill (1999) only when beginning at the franchise’s origin is more important than convenience, and play it before Silent Hill 3 if their connected story matters. Choose Silent Hill f for its standalone Japanese setting, or use the free The Short Message on PS5 as a brief test before committing to a full game.
