Start with Naruto, then watch Naruto Shippuden. If you prefer the manga, begin with Naruto, volume 1, and read the completed main series in publication order. Boruto is a follow-on, not a prerequisite for Naruto’s central story.

What order should you watch Naruto in?

  1. Watch Naruto, the original anime, first.
  2. Continue with Naruto Shippuden.
  3. After finishing the main story, watch or read Boruto if you want to follow the next generation.

That sequence follows the story’s progression: the official Naruto site describes Shippuden as beginning after Naruto returns from training with Jiraiya. It lists Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, and Boruto as separate anime entries.

How long is the original Naruto anime?

VIZ lists the original Naruto anime at 220 episodes. Its catalog presents Naruto Shippuden in parts, but the reviewed official pages do not establish an official episode count for the full series. See VIZ’s Naruto catalog and Naruto Shippuden catalog for current listings and formats.

Where should you start if you want to read Naruto?

Start at Naruto, volume 1, then follow the manga’s publication order through the completed main series. VIZ says the manga debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999 and concluded in late 2014. The manga gives you the story in its original publication sequence without the anime’s episode pacing or anime-only material. VIZ’s Naruto catalog lists the series and its volumes.

Should you watch the anime or read the manga?

Choose Best fit What to expect
Manga You want a direct route through the main story and prefer reading. Begin with volume 1 and continue in publication order.
Anime You prefer animation, voice acting, music, and a screen-based experience. Watch the original series before Shippuden; the original anime has 220 episodes according to VIZ.

There is no official chapter-to-episode switching map established by the cited catalogs, so switching between manga chapters and anime episodes requires a separate guide. Pick one medium for the main sequence unless you have a specific reason to alternate.

Can you skip Naruto filler episodes?

You can either watch every episode for the complete anime experience or use a current episode-by-episode filler guide to shorten the watch. The official VIZ catalog pages establish series listings, not which episodes adapt the manga, mix material, or are anime-original. Treat any skip list as a third-party viewing aid, and check how it handles mixed episodes and anime-original arcs rather than assuming every labeled episode is an obvious skip.

Where do the Naruto movies fit?

The official catalog establishes that Naruto movies exist, but the cited pages do not provide a complete movie chronology or settle which films are essential to the main story. Treat movies as optional extras; do not insert them at specific points in the sequence without consulting a dedicated chronology.

VIZ lists Naruto and Naruto Shippuden in streaming and physical formats. The official Naruto site cautions that streaming availability varies by region, and licensed catalogs can change. Check current local listings for both series before subscribing or purchasing; for discs, confirm which episodes or parts a set includes. The official site is at naruto-official.com.
