For a first playthrough, play the main story in release progression: Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War 4, then Gears 5. If the original game is offered in a newer presentation on your platform, that version can fill the first position.

There is one legitimate alternative: Gears of War: E-Day is an origin-story prequel set 14 years before the first game. Starting there gives you in-universe chronology, while starting with the original preserves the way the series’ story and major reveals were introduced to players.

The recommended order for a first playthrough

The simplest answer to “what Gears games do I play?” is the core five-game sequence. It follows the franchise’s broad release progression and moves naturally from the original trilogy into the later sequel arc.

Order Game What it contributes
1 Gears of War Introduces the world, the human–Locust conflict, Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago and the series’ cover-based third-person shooting.
2 Gears of War 2 Continues the original campaign with a larger war and builds directly on the first game’s characters and consequences.
3 Gears of War 3 Completes the original trilogy’s central story arc.
4 Gears of War 4 Begins the later sequel storyline with a new generation while retaining the setting and history established by the trilogy.
5 Gears 5 Continues the post-trilogy narrative and develops the newer character focus.

This route is best if you are new to the universe, want the most coherent introduction to its mechanics, or prefer to encounter character developments and revelations in the order the games broadly presented them. It also keeps the main campaign format consistent: a third-person action series rather than a mixture of shooters and strategy games.

Why the original game comes first

The first Gears of War establishes the vocabulary used throughout the sequels: taking cover, blind-firing, roadie running, reviving a downed teammate and coordinating with a partner. Later games assume that you understand the setting and recognize returning characters. Beginning with the first campaign lets those systems and relationships grow without asking you to learn their history backward.

Using a newer version of the first game

You do not need to locate an exact original release if your platform offers a current version of the first Gears of War. A newer presentation can serve as the first entry, provided it contains the same core campaign. Continue with Gears of War 2 after finishing it; do not jump from a remastered first game directly to a prequel unless you have deliberately chosen chronology-first play.

Release progression versus chronological story order

“Best order” depends on whether you value presentation order or in-universe chronology. The publisher has not established a mandatory sequence for newcomers. The chronology below is a broad reference-based arrangement, so expansions or bonus chapters may not fit perfectly into it.

Priority Order Best for
Release progression Gears of War → Gears of War 2 → Gears of War 3 → Gears of War 4 → Gears 5 Most first-time players, players who want the core narrative, and anyone who wants the series’ reveals in their broad introduction order.
Chronology-first Gears of War: E-Day → Judgment → Gears Tactics → Gears of War → Gears of War 2 → Gears of War 3 → Gears of War 4 → Gears 5 Players who want the earliest events in the universe first and do not mind moving between different formats.

What changes when you start with E-Day

E-Day takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War. It follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde first erupts during Emergence Day. That makes it the earliest major story entry in the broad chronology, but it was not the first game released. Starting there gives you background before the original campaign; it can also change the impact of introductions and revelations that the older games were designed to deliver first.

Gears of War 2 - Xbox 360 (Renewed)
  • Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
  • This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.

Why chronology is not automatically better

Prequels are often written with knowledge of the original story in mind. E-Day can explain an earlier period while still assuming that the audience is familiar with the importance of Marcus, Dom and the Locust conflict. If you want context in historical order, choose chronology. If you want the clearest onboarding and the series’ intended progression from its original launch, choose release progression.

Where the optional games fit

Once you finish the five core campaigns, you can add the prequels and spin-offs. They expand the setting but are not required to understand the main sequence.

Gears of War: Judgment

Judgment is a prequel and spin-off. Place it after the core story if you want to preserve the main five-game arc, or before the original game if you are following a chronology-first route. Treat it as additional background rather than a prerequisite for Gears of War 2 through Gears 5.

Gears Tactics

Gears Tactics belongs earlier in the broad timeline, but its format is different: it is a turn-based strategy game rather than a third-person shooter. It is a good choice when you want more world-building and tactical decision-making, not when you are looking for the next campaign in the main action sequence. You can play it before the original in a chronology-first tour or after the core five as a genre change.

Rank #3
Gears of War 3 (Renewed)
  • Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
  • This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.

Gears of War: E-Day

E-Day is the major origin-story addition. It is set 14 years before the first game and focuses on Marcus and Dom during the Locust emergence. Because it is designed as a full campaign rather than a short historical prologue, you can make it your first game, insert it before the original during a chronological replay, or save it until after the trilogy so that its references land with more context.

E-Day availability and multiplayer details

Xbox Wire reported that Gears of War: E-Day launched worldwide on October 6, 2026. The reported launch platforms were Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Game Pass and Steam. The Xbox product listing also identifies Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC and Steam, with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass availability at launch. Xbox Play Anywhere supports shared progression between Xbox and PC.

Storefronts and subscription catalogs can change by country and over time, so check your regional listing before buying or subscribing. A launch listing does not guarantee that a game remains in a particular catalog or that every edition is sold in every territory.

  • Solo: the campaign can be played alone.
  • Local co-op: split-screen campaign play is supported.
  • Online co-op: the campaign supports up to four players online.

Those options make E-Day suitable for a group introduction, but they do not change the recommended story order. If your group is new to Gears, beginning with the original game still teaches the series’ fundamentals in the same order as the release-progression route.

Choosing the right route for your goal

Choose release progression when you want the core story

  • You have never played a Gears game.
  • You want a consistent third-person shooter experience.
  • You prefer character introductions and revelations in the order the series broadly delivered them.
  • You want to finish the central story with five campaigns rather than a larger completionist tour.

Start with Gears of War and continue without inserting the prequels. After Gears 5, return to Judgment, Tactics or E-Day if you want more context.

Choose chronology-first when you want the earliest events

  • You care more about the universe’s internal timeline than release history.
  • You are comfortable beginning with a newer prequel.
  • You do not mind moving from an action shooter to turn-based strategy for Tactics.

Use E-Day first, then Judgment and Tactics, followed by the original trilogy and the later sequels. Remember that this is a broad chronology, not an official required order.

Choose a hybrid route when you want context without disrupting the main arc

A practical compromise is to play Gears of War, Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 first, then E-Day, Judgment and Tactics before moving to Gears of War 4 and Gears 5. This preserves the original trilogy’s momentum while giving you prequel material before the newer sequel arc. It is a personal sequencing choice, not a publisher-defined order.

A step-by-step plan for a first-time player

  1. Select the first Gears of War campaign. Use the current version available on your platform if it replaces the original presentation.
  2. Finish the campaign before adding a prequel. This gives you the setting, controls and principal relationships that later games build upon.
  3. Play Gears of War 2 and then Gears of War 3. Keep the original trilogy together so its central arc is not interrupted by a different format or era.
  4. Continue to Gears of War 4. This begins the later sequel storyline and assumes familiarity with the trilogy’s history.
  5. Play Gears 5. It follows the newer arc introduced by Gears of War 4.
  6. Add optional entries according to your interest. Choose E-Day for Marcus and Dom’s origin period, Judgment for a prequel campaign, or Tactics for turn-based strategy.

Common play-order mistakes

Starting with every game at once

The franchise includes a core shooter sequence and optional prequels with different formats. Installing everything can make the timeline appear more complicated than it is. Decide first whether you are following the five-game core or taking a completionist route.

Gears of War 4 - Xbox One (Renewed)
  • 25 Years after Gears of War 3, spurred by a series of strange disappearances, JD Fenix must embrace his father’s legacy and battle a terrifying new enemy
  • Never Fight Alone: Enjoy two-player co-op with friends locally via split-screen, over Xbox Live or LAN. Player 2 can select either Kait or Del
  • Redefined Cover Gameplay: New close-cover combat moves and combat-knife executions turn each piece of cover into an offensive opportunity
  • Brutal New Weapons: An incredible arsenal of new weapons includes the Buzzkill and Dropshot, which can shoot around and over cover, raining destruction from all angles

Assuming E-Day must be first because it is a prequel

Its setting is earlier, but chronological position and best first experience are different questions. E-Day is an excellent first choice for a timeline-focused player; it is not a requirement for understanding the original game.

Expecting Tactics to play like the shooters

Tactics uses turn-based strategy systems. Choose it for planning, squad management and a different view of the setting, not as a direct mechanical continuation of the third-person campaigns.

Treating regional access as permanent

Game Pass inclusion, storefront listings and physical availability can vary by region and date. Verify the current Xbox or Steam listing for your country before relying on a subscription or a particular edition.

Optional production companion

The Art and Making of Gears of War: E-Day from Insight Editions is an optional companion for readers who want development context. Xbox Wire describes interviews with developers and material covering the game’s art, story, sound and design. It is not needed to understand any campaign or decide your play order, and availability, format and regional pricing should be checked with the publisher or retailer.

Bottom line for newcomers

Play Gears of War → Gears of War 2 → Gears of War 3 → Gears of War 4 → Gears 5 unless you specifically want in-universe chronology. Start with E-Day only when experiencing the earliest timeline is more important to you than following the series’ broad release progression. Add Judgment and Tactics afterward—or place them before the original in a deliberate chronology-first tour.
