Start with FINAL FANTASY XVI if you want a modern, officially standalone single-player game with real-time action combat. Choose FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE if Midgar, cinematic character drama and a connected saga appeal more than a self-contained story. Choose FINAL FANTASY XIV Online only if you specifically want an MMORPG. You do not need to play the numbered games in numerical order, but you do need to check whether a game belongs to a named sequel, remake project or online subseries.
Do you need to play Final Fantasy in numerical order?
No. The numbered games are not one continuous story that must be consumed from I through XVI. Square Enix’s official Final Fantasy series index presents entries I through XVI with different premises, settings and casts. The number is an identity for that entry, not a required play sequence.
That does not mean every game is isolated. Named subseries, direct sequels and remake projects can share characters, settings or an ongoing plot. The safest rule is:
- Numbered mainline entry: usually designed to introduce its own world and conflict.
- Subtitle, sequel or remake label: check the continuity before starting; it may assume a previous game or lead into a later one.
- Online subseries: expect a persistent service game rather than a short, self-contained campaign.
In other words, “start with the first number” is not a universal recommendation. Start with the experience you actually want, then confirm whether its story is complete within that release.

The best starting route for each kind of newcomer

Why FINAL FANTASY XVI is the clearest standalone starting point
A complete entry without an earlier game on your checklist
Square Enix’s June 22, 2023 launch announcement calls FINAL FANTASY XVI “the latest standalone entry in the critically-acclaimed FINAL FANTASY franchise.” That is the publisher’s description of the game at launch, not a claim that it will remain the newest entry indefinitely. The same announcement identifies it as a mainline numbered title rather than a sequel that requires another Final Fantasy game first.
For a newcomer, the practical benefit is simple: you can begin with XVI without learning a previous cast, timeline or fictional history. You can evaluate it on the qualities it puts forward instead of treating it as homework for another installment.
Its combat is action-first
XVI is an action RPG with real-time combat and RPG features. That makes it a good fit if you want direct control, responsive attacks and a more immediate battle rhythm than a menu-led system. It should not be used as a stand-in for every Final Fantasy game: the franchise changes combat style, pacing and tone from one entry to another.

Conversely, players seeking a highly tactical or turn-based introduction should treat XVI as a taste of one branch of the series, not a representative sample of all of it.
Check the platform before you buy
Platform availability changes by region and edition. Square Enix’s June 9, 2025 announcement covered FINAL FANTASY XVI on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC at that time. That announcement does not replace a current store listing, so verify the edition, operating-system requirements and regional availability on the platform you intend to use.

- Confirm whether your console or PC storefront lists the base game or a bundle.
- Check that the listed edition includes any story content you expect.
- Use the current publisher or retailer page rather than an old launch article for price and stock.
When FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE is the better choice
It is designed to welcome people who are new to Final Fantasy
Square Enix’s April 10, 2020 announcement describes FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE as a standalone gaming experience set in Midgar. A later publisher announcement explicitly calls FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE an ideal entry point for newcomers. Together, those statements support starting there if the setting, presentation and characters are what drew you to Final Fantasy in the first place.
You do not need to have played the original FINAL FANTASY VII to understand why this is an approachable first purchase. The game is structured as its own playable release, with its own beginning and ending point, rather than asking a new player to start with an older numbered entry.

“Standalone” does not mean “the whole remake story”
The two descriptions answer different questions. “Standalone gaming experience” describes what you can play and follow in the first release. It does not say that the remake project has no continuation. Square Enix’s September 3, 2026 announcement identifies FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION as the third and final entry in the remake series and gives it a planned April 8, 2027 release date.
Therefore, choose INTERGRADE when you are comfortable beginning a connected story whose conclusion is a separate release. If you want one game that closes its own central narrative rather than opening a multi-game commitment, XVI is the cleaner choice.
What is available, and what is still upcoming
In the September 3, 2026 announcement, Square Enix said the first two remake games are available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. It also described a Trilogy Edition that gives immediate access to those first two games. The same announcement says the third/final game, FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, is planned for April 8, 2027; as of October 13, 2026, that final release is not yet available.

Availability can differ between physical and digital formats, regions, editions and retailers. Check the current listing for your platform before assuming that a particular bundle, disc or download code is in stock. A Twin Pack or Trilogy Edition is optional: you do not need to buy a bundle to begin with a standalone entry such as XVI.
Choose FINAL FANTASY XIV Online only if you want an MMORPG
It answers a different question from the single-player games
FINAL FANTASY XIV Online is an MMORPG. You create or develop a character in a persistent online game, play alongside other people and engage with a service that is updated over time. That is fundamentally different from selecting a single-player game, finishing its campaign and moving on.
Choose XIV if the following sound attractive:
- Playing in an ongoing online world rather than a closed campaign.
- Cooperating with other players as well as progressing alone at times.
- Returning for new content, events or long-term character development.
If your question is “Which Final Fantasy can I finish by myself without an online commitment?”, XIV is not the answer. It may be an excellent starting point for an MMO player, but its format should be treated as a primary buying decision, not a minor feature.
How to decide when you are still unsure
1. Pick the combat relationship you want
Start by deciding whether you want direct, real-time action. If yes, XVI is the evidence-backed recommendation in this guide. If you prefer to discover a different combat approach, use the official series index to inspect other premises, then research the specific entry’s mechanics before purchasing; the available publisher material does not establish a complete ranking of combat systems across the franchise.
2. Pick a setting and tone
Midgar points toward the VII remake route: a cinematic urban setting and a character-driven story that continues across multiple releases. XVI is the better match when you want a new mainline world without signing up for that remake continuity. The official index is useful here because it gives concise premises for I through XVI without implying that one setting is universally best.

3. Decide whether “finished” means one release
Ask yourself whether you want a self-contained first purchase or whether you are happy to follow a planned series. XVI is presented as standalone. INTERGRADE is welcoming and playable on its own, but it is the opening part of a three-game remake project. XIV is ongoing by design.
4. Match the format to your schedule
A single-player entry lets you set your own pace without coordinating with a live service. An MMORPG rewards regular engagement and tolerance for changing content. Neither format is automatically better; the wrong choice is buying one while expecting the other.
5. Verify the exact platform and edition
Before checkout, confirm:
- Your device appears in the current listing.
- The edition name matches the game you intend to start.
- Any bundle contains the releases you expect rather than only an entitlement or upgrade.
- Physical stock, digital availability and regional language options meet your needs.
How Final Fantasy continuity actually works
Numbered entries are useful labels, not a universal chronology
The official index’s presentation of I through XVI as varied premises explains why numerical order is a poor default. The number tells you which mainline entry you are looking at; it does not, by itself, tell you that the plot continues from the previous number.
Names matter more than numbers
When a title includes a subtitle, a remake designation or an online label, stop and check its relationship to other games. The VII remake project is the clearest example in this guide: its first release is approachable, yet the project itself continues through a second game and a planned third/final release.
Separate “can I play it?” from “is the story complete?”
A newcomer can often play a connected project’s first release successfully. The important distinction is whether that release concludes the broader narrative. INTERGRADE can be your first game, but starting there means accepting future installments. This distinction prevents two common errors: telling readers they cannot begin a remake, or promising that one release completes the entire remake saga.

Common starting mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: beginning with I solely because it is numbered first
Fix: use the official index to choose by premise, then check continuity. Numerical order is not a requirement for the mainline games.
Mistake: treating XVI as a summary of the whole franchise
Fix: understand that XVI demonstrates one modern, action-focused interpretation. Its real-time combat and Timely Accessories are useful fit indicators, not a franchise-wide standard.
Mistake: assuming “standalone” means the remake project is finished
Fix: distinguish the first game’s playable experience from the project’s overall continuity. The publisher’s September 2026 announcement places REVELATION as the planned third and final entry, scheduled for April 8, 2027.

Mistake: relying on an old platform list
Fix: treat platform and edition information as time-sensitive. Recheck the current publisher or retailer listing, especially when an announcement names a future release or a bundle.
A practical first-purchase plan
- Write down your non-negotiable: standalone story, Midgar setting, action combat or online play.
- Use the route table: select XVI, INTERGRADE or XIV based on that priority.
- Open the official series index: review alternative premises if none of those routes appeals.
- Check continuity language: look for sequel, remake, trilogy or online descriptions before buying.
- Verify your platform and edition: use a current listing, not a launch-era assumption.
- Set the right expectation: one release can be playable for newcomers while still belonging to a longer connected project.
Bottom line for three different newcomers
Choose FINAL FANTASY XVI when you want the most straightforward modern entry point: a standalone mainline game, real-time action combat and optional assistance. Square Enix’s June 22, 2023 announcement supports that description.
Choose FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE when Midgar and its characters matter more to you than having a finished one-game saga. It is explicitly positioned for newcomers, but it starts a connected remake trilogy whose planned final chapter is dated April 8, 2027 and was not yet released on October 13, 2026.
