There is no single reading order you need to follow to start Marvel Comics. Pick a character, team, or kind of story you like, then begin with a first issue, a bounded story arc, or a self-contained book. Marvel’s own reading guides offer several entry points rather than one required chronology.
Choose your starting route
A new run, a complete story, and a major crossover offer different reading experiences. A run usually follows one title or character; a self-contained story gives you a more limited commitment; a crossover can involve a wider cast and more continuity. Choose based on how much background and reading time you want to take on.

Start with a character or team
Spider-Man
For a new-origin retelling, Marvel points to Ultimate Spider-Man (2000) #1. If you want to begin with Peter Parker’s original ongoing series, start with Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #1. You can also skip the long publication history and try a notable shorter story: “If This Be My Destiny” runs through Amazing Spider-Man #31–33. Hawkeye
Hawkeye (2012) #1, by Matt Fraction and David Aja, is a beginner-list pick centered on Clint Barton and Kate Bishop. Choose it if a character-focused series and the two Hawkeyes appeal to you. Marvel’s beginner guide

Ms. Marvel
Ms. Marvel (2014) #1 introduces Kamala Khan’s series and is another of Marvel’s recommended starts. It is a clear option if you want to begin with Kamala rather than work backward through older Marvel titles. Marvel’s beginner guide
Fantastic Four

Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy (2008) #1 is Marvel’s suggested modern team starting point. Marvel also lists series beginnings in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2020, so the right starting issue can depend on which era or cast interests you. Marvel’s Guardians guide
Try a complete story or a crossover?
For a more contained commitment
A bounded story lets you sample Marvel without signing up for decades of issues or a long-running series. Marvel’s self-contained guide includes Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment, while its other suggestions include story arcs that begin in a larger ongoing title: Planet Hulk starts in Hulk #92, and Daredevil: Born Again starts in Daredevil #226. For a universe-wide event
Events such as Civil War, Infinity Gauntlet, and the two Secret Wars series draw on a broader Marvel setting than a solo-run opening. You can start with an event if its premise attracts you, but expect a larger cast and references to other parts of the universe. Marvel’s event guide lists these choices; it does not establish a single complete prerequisite sequence for them. - Want the simplest entry? Pick a series’ #1 issue from a character or team you already like.
- Want a defined endpoint? Choose a self-contained book or a named arc rather than starting at the earliest issue in a character’s history.
- Want a big shared-universe story? Choose an event, knowing that its cast and continuity may extend beyond its main series.
- Unsure about a character? Use tone and subject as your filter: street-level adventure, cosmic science fiction, team drama, or a coming-of-age story can be more useful guides than publication date alone.
You can read single issues, collected print editions, or digitally. Marvel describes Marvel Unlimited as a digital reading service and provides curated lists, but check its current catalog, terms, and availability in your region before relying on a specific title being included. Marvel Unlimited

How to pick your first comic
- Name what interests you. Choose a character, team, genre, or tone—not an obligation to understand all of Marvel.
- Choose the scope. For one character or team, use a recommended series opening. For a shorter commitment, pick a bounded story. For a large-scale conflict, choose an event.
- Check the issue or edition. Confirm the title, year, and issue number; for a collected edition, verify which issues it contains and whether it is currently available where you live.
- Read forward from there. Follow the title while it holds your interest. If a reference is confusing, you can decide then whether to explore the related story; a complete Marvel chronology is not a prerequisite.
