For Tutankhamun’s treasures, go to the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza. GEM’s official visitor information includes the Tutankhamun Galleries, along with Main Galleries covering Egyptian history from the prehistoric period through the Roman era. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat are separate destinations, not alternate names for GEM.
Book through GEM’s official ticketing site, check the hours for your date, and treat historic announcements about transferred objects as different from a live, room-by-room inventory.
Grand Egyptian Museum: the primary place to see Tutankhamun’s collection
The Grand Egyptian Museum is in Giza, beside the Giza pyramid complex. Its official visitor page lists the Tutankhamun Galleries as part of a standard visit, together with the Main Galleries, Grand Hall, Grand Stairs, Khufu’s Boats Museum, commercial area and exterior gardens. The museum’s collection portal describes material spanning the prehistoric period through the Roman period, so it is also the strongest single destination for a broad introduction to ancient Egyptian history.

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities separately announced that 163 objects were transferred from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir to GEM as part of the plan to display the young king’s collection together. That figure belongs to the reported transfer and is not a count of the entire Tutankhamun collection or a daily inventory. The ministry’s announcement says: “163 pieces from the treasures of the golden king Tutankhamun are coming from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, as part of a plan to transfer and display the entire collection of the young king for the first time in one place.” See the announcement at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
What you can expect at GEM
- Tutankhamun Galleries: the dedicated area for the king’s funerary and royal material identified on the official visitor page.
- Main Galleries: a chronological presentation of ancient Egyptian holdings. GEM’s collection portal is at gem.eg/en/collection/.
- Additional museum spaces: the Grand Hall, Grand Stairs, Khufu’s Boats Museum and outdoor areas are included in the visit description, but individual access can depend on operating conditions.
Is King Tut’s mask still in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo?
The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir is a different institution from GEM. The ministry’s transfer notice confirms that Tutankhamun objects moved from Tahrir to GEM, but it does not establish that every Tutankhamun-related object has left Tahrir or specify the museum’s current room-by-room display. Do not plan a visit on the assumption that a particular object, including the burial mask, is currently on view there unless the Egyptian Museum publishes current object information for your date.
Tahrir remains a major museum destination in central Cairo, and it may be worthwhile for its own collections. However, the evidence available here does not verify a current list of Tutankhamun objects remaining in the building. For the most reliable itinerary, use GEM for the dedicated Tutankhamun Galleries and treat Tahrir as a separate stop whose open rooms and displays must be checked independently.

What about the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization?
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is another separate museum in Fustat, Cairo. Egypt’s official tourism portal lists it as a national museum destination. The available official information does not verify a detailed, current NMEC object list for specific Tutankhamun artifacts, so avoid promising that a named item will be there.

NMEC can still complement a GEM visit if your schedule includes Fustat and you want another institutional perspective on Egyptian heritage. Decide based on the museum’s current official information, location and opening status rather than assuming that material transferred to GEM is duplicated at NMEC. The official tourism directory is Experience Egypt.
GEM hours and last entry
GEM’s live ticketing page lists different schedules for the complex as a whole and for the galleries. The hours below are the current schedule published on that page; they can change for holidays, special events or operational reasons.

Because the complex can remain open after the galleries close, an evening ticket does not necessarily provide more time inside the Tutankhamun displays. Check the date-specific schedule before travelling and arrive early enough to clear entry and reach the galleries before the one-hour cutoff.

How to buy tickets safely
- Open tickets.gem.eg, the official GEM ticketing and visitor-information site.
- Choose your visit date and review which galleries or spaces are listed as available.
- Select the applicable visitor category and confirm the date-specific price shown at checkout. A single evergreen price is not reliable because cost and availability depend on date and category.
- Keep the booking confirmation available for entry and recheck the site shortly before departure for changed hours, closures or capacity notices.
GEM states: “This is the only official website for purchasing tickets to the Grand Egyptian Museum.” The museum also says it is not responsible for tickets bought through other platforms. Avoid third-party pages that present themselves as official, and do not assume a reseller’s availability reflects the museum’s own inventory.

Photography and filming rules in the Tutankhamun Galleries
Personal photography and video are generally permitted at GEM, but the permission is conditional. Designated parts of the Tutankhamun Galleries prohibit photography, so follow signs and staff instructions rather than assuming that every case can be photographed.
- Flash photography is prohibited.
- Tripods and monopods are prohibited.
- Selfie sticks, drones and external lighting are prohibited.
- Live streaming is prohibited.
- Gallery-specific restrictions override the general permission for personal photography.
These rules can be applied differently in particular spaces or changed by the museum. Carry a phone or camera that can work without flash, and be prepared to put it away when a sign or staff member requires it. The current policy is published with GEM’s visitor information at the official ticketing site.
Choosing between GEM, Tahrir and NMEC
The three museums serve different itinerary purposes. Use this comparison to decide where to spend limited time, then verify opening status and displays on each institution’s official channels.

Do not treat “in Cairo” as meaning that these museums are interchangeable. Giza, Tahrir and Fustat are different neighborhoods and require separate travel planning. Compare the location, the galleries actually open on your date, ticket availability and the collection focus you want, rather than trying to visit all three by default.

A practical one-day plan for Tutankhamun visitors
Before leaving
- Confirm your GEM date and entry category on the official ticket site.
- Check both the complex hours and the shorter gallery hours.
- Review closure notices and the photography restrictions.
- Allow enough time to reach Giza and pass entry procedures before the last-entry cutoff.
At the museum
- Enter during gallery hours, not merely during the wider complex’s opening period.
- Follow signs to the Tutankhamun Galleries and note any areas marked photography-free.
- Use the Main Galleries to place the royal objects in the longer prehistoric-to-Roman chronology described by GEM’s collection portal.
- Keep your ticket and follow staff directions if a room temporarily closes or visitor flow changes.
If you add a second museum
Schedule Tahrir or NMEC as a distinct destination only after checking that museum’s current official information. Neither the transfer announcement nor the tourism directory proves that a particular object is on display there on your travel date.

Egypt’s State Information Service reported that GEM holds more than 100,000 artifacts. That is a broad museum total, not a claim that more than 100,000 objects are simultaneously displayed. Exhibition galleries show a curated portion, and the visible selection can change as conservation, loans, rotations or operational work occur. The opening report is available at the State Information Service.
Likewise, the reported 163-object transfer from Tahrir should not be converted into an estimate of the total number of objects in Tutankhamun’s collection. It records one transfer announcement connected with the plan to bring the collection together.
Common planning mistakes and how to avoid them
Going to Tahrir for the Tutankhamun Galleries
Problem: assuming the historic Egyptian Museum and GEM are the same stop.
Fix: put GEM in Giza on the itinerary for the dedicated Tutankhamun Galleries; verify any Tahrir display separately.

Using a reseller without checking the official site
Problem: buying a ticket whose date, category or availability does not match GEM’s records.
Fix: purchase through the official ticketing site, which GEM identifies as the only official ticket website.
Arriving after gallery entry has ended
Problem: relying on the complex closing time while overlooking the earlier gallery closing time and one-hour last-entry rule.
Fix: plan around the gallery schedule in the hours table.
Expecting unrestricted photography
Problem: bringing a tripod, using flash or filming in a restricted Tutankhamun area.
Fix: use handheld, non-flash photography only where signs permit and follow staff instructions.

Problem: treating a general museum listing as proof that a specific artifact is currently displayed.
Fix: check that institution’s current official collection or visitor information before committing travel time.
Bottom line for seeing ancient Egyptian artifacts
Choose GEM in Giza when Tutankhamun is the priority. Its official visitor information includes the Tutankhamun Galleries, and its Main Galleries extend the visit beyond the boy king to a broad ancient Egyptian collection. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir and NMEC in Fustat remain separate museums whose current object-level displays require separate verification. Buy tickets only through GEM’s official site, use the date-specific hours, and expect photography restrictions inside designated parts of the Tutankhamun Galleries.
