For the most dependable visit, choose a permanent museum display: Enola Gay is at the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, while Bockscar is at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Ohio. To see a B-29 that still flies, follow Doc’s Wichita schedule or the Commemorative Air Force tour calendar for FIFI. Flying-aircraft locations, interior access, hours and prices can change, so verify the official operator or museum information immediately before you travel.

The distinction between permanent and temporary access is the most important planning fact. A museum display is generally the safer choice when you are making a dedicated trip. Doc and FIFI can provide a closer look and, at some events, access inside the aircraft, but neither should be treated as being at one fixed public location every day.
Enola Gay at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
The Smithsonian’s collection record places Enola Gay at the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. The aircraft is the most prominent surviving B-29 associated with the atomic-bomb missions, but its history needs to be described precisely.
What Enola Gay did
Enola Gay flew as the advance weather-reconnaissance aircraft for the Nagasaki mission. Three days earlier, it dropped the first atomic weapon used in combat on Hiroshima. It was not the aircraft that dropped the Nagasaki bomb; that aircraft was Bockscar. Keeping those missions separate prevents a common and consequential historical error.

Visitor details
The center is at 14390 Air and Space Museum Parkway, Chantilly, Virginia 20151. The Smithsonian currently lists free admission, with no passes required, and a $15 parking fee. Listed hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day except December 25. Hours, parking arrangements and display status can change, so check the museum’s current visitor information for your date.
Public transportation includes Fairfax Connector bus 983 from the Silver Line’s Innovation Center station. Bus schedules vary. The Smithsonian warns that some mapping services may direct drivers toward a closed security road; use the museum’s own directions information rather than relying on an automatically generated route.
Why this is the predictable choice
Because Enola Gay is in a permanent museum collection, you are not trying to match a touring aircraft’s itinerary. A temporary gallery closure, building closure or display change is still possible, but the risk is materially lower than planning around an air-show appearance. The center also displays many other aircraft, so the visit can remain worthwhile even if a particular exhibit is temporarily inaccessible.

Bockscar is displayed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Ohio. The Smithsonian’s visitor FAQ also identifies that museum as Bockscar’s display location.
Its historical role
Bockscar was the B-29 that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. That is the role to use when identifying the aircraft; Enola Gay and Bockscar were involved in different missions three days apart.

Planning the visit
The supplied museum information establishes the display location but does not provide a single set of current hours, admission rules or access arrangements for every date. Before traveling, check the Air Force museum’s current visitor-information page for opening arrangements, any security or access changes and the status of the exhibit. A permanent display is more predictable than a tour stop, but it is not a guarantee against temporary closures.
If your primary goal is to see both atomic-mission B-29s, a trip to Ohio for Bockscar and a separate trip to Chantilly for Enola Gay is required; they are not displayed at the same site.

Doc: a flying B-29 based in Wichita
B-29 Doc is one of the aircraft that can still operate as a flying museum. Its hangar, education space and visitor center are at Eisenhower National Airport in Wichita, Kansas. The facility is described as a 42,000-square-foot hangar and visitor center.
Published hangar hours and admission
During the winter maintenance period, the official visitor page lists these hours:

Why you must check before driving to the hangar
The visitor center closes while Doc is on tour and may also close for private events. Check the organization’s calendar and live hangar feed, or call, before setting out. A listed weekly opening pattern is not enough if the aircraft has departed for an air show or the building has been reserved.

Tour appearances
Doc travels to air shows and other tour stops. Those appearances can let visitors see the aircraft at close range, but dates, aircraft presence and the type of access vary by event. Confirm that Doc itself—not merely another historic aircraft—is scheduled, and read the event’s rules for tickets, viewing areas and cockpit access.
The operator also states that Doc was one of 1,644 B-29s manufactured in Wichita during World War II. That figure is useful historical context for a Wichita visit, but it does not indicate how many B-29s survive today.
FIFI and other changing tour stops
FIFI is identified as one of the two airworthy B-29s in a National Museum of the United States Air Force event announcement dated July 1, 2025. The announcement documented a public visit to Dayton on July 14–15, 2025, with aircraft viewing and interior access during event hours.
Why the Dayton information is not a standing location
Those July 2025 dates describe a completed event, not a permanent base or a recurring annual itinerary. Do not plan a current trip around them. For a future appearance, check the Commemorative Air Force’s current tour schedule and confirm both the date and the aircraft’s presence.

Interior access is event-specific
The Dayton event allowed interior exploration during its scheduled hours. That does not establish that every FIFI stop, or every public day, permits visitors inside. Access can depend on staffing, weather, safety procedures, event layout and the aircraft’s operating status. Treat interior access as an advertised feature that must be confirmed for the specific stop.
How many B-29s still exist?
The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum FAQ reports that 30 B-29s still exist and 25 are in museums. The page does not show a publication date and is an older FAQ, so this should be read as the museum’s reported count rather than a newly verified 2026 census. The total may not match a current registry if aircraft are reclassified, restored, moved or newly documented.
The same FAQ states that 15 B-29s were built for atomic-bombing missions and only Enola Gay and Bockscar still exist. Again, attribute that figure to the Smithsonian FAQ. It explains why these two aircraft receive particular attention, while the broader surviving fleet includes aircraft with different wartime and postwar histories.
“Still exist” and “on public display” are not interchangeable. An aircraft can survive in storage, under restoration, in a private collection or in a restricted facility without being available to visitors. The practical list for travelers is therefore shorter than the historical survival count.
Choosing the right destination
Use these four questions before booking transportation or lodging.

Do you need a dependable display?
Choose Udvar-Hazy for Enola Gay or the Air Force museum for Bockscar. Permanent displays provide the highest probability of seeing the named aircraft, subject to ordinary museum closures and exhibit changes.
Do you want a flying aircraft?
Choose Doc’s Wichita base when the aircraft is home and the hangar is open, or follow Doc’s tour schedule. For FIFI, select a confirmed Commemorative Air Force stop. A flying aircraft offers an operating-history perspective that a static display cannot, but the schedule is inherently less predictable.
Is interior access essential?
Doc’s Wichita visitor page lists optional cockpit access, subject to availability. The cited FIFI Dayton event offered interior access during event hours. Neither detail guarantees access at every future tour stop. If walking inside matters, make it a condition of your itinerary and confirm it directly with the operator.

How much schedule risk can you accept?
A permanent museum is the lower-risk option. Doc can close during tours or private events, and FIFI’s appearances are date-specific. Build a backup museum or aviation attraction into a flying-aircraft trip if seeing the B-29 is the central purpose of your journey.
A practical pre-visit checklist
- Identify the exact aircraft. Decide whether your goal is Enola Gay, Bockscar, Doc or FIFI. Do not assume that a general “B-29” listing means the aircraft you want.
- Confirm the location for your date. Permanent displays can have temporary closures; flying aircraft can be away on tour, undergoing maintenance or restricted to a private event.
- Read the current visitor page. Verify opening hours, admission, parking, security rules and whether advance reservations or timed entry apply.
- For Udvar-Hazy, plan the approach. Use the museum’s directions information because some mapping tools may route you toward a closed security road. If using transit, check the current Fairfax Connector 983 schedule from Innovation Center station.
- For Doc, check more than the weekly hours. Review the calendar and live hangar feed, then call if the aircraft’s tour status is unclear. Confirm cockpit-access availability and the price that applies to your group.
- For FIFI, verify the event itself. Check the Commemorative Air Force itinerary, aircraft presence, viewing times and interior-access policy. A past event announcement is not a current schedule.
- Allow for operational changes. Weather, maintenance, safety requirements and private bookings can change access even after a schedule is published.
- Save confirmation details. Keep the museum or operator phone number, calendar page and any ticket or event information available on the day of travel.
How to describe the aircraft accurately on site
Use the aircraft’s name and mission carefully. Enola Gay was the advance weather-reconnaissance aircraft for the Nagasaki mission and dropped the first atomic weapon used in combat on Hiroshima three days earlier. Bockscar dropped the Nagasaki bomb. Calling Enola Gay the Nagasaki aircraft reverses their documented roles.
When discussing survival numbers, say that the Smithsonian FAQ reports 30 surviving B-29s, with 25 in museums, and that it reports only Enola Gay and Bockscar surviving from the 15 aircraft built for atomic-bombing missions. Those are museum-reported figures from an older, undated FAQ, not a claim that every surviving airframe has been independently recounted for the current year.
At a flying-aircraft event, distinguish the aircraft from the program around it. Doc’s visitor center, a Doc tour stop and a FIFI appearance are different access situations. The presence of a B-29 at an air show does not by itself establish cockpit access, a flight demonstration or a full interior tour.

For the highest certainty, visit Enola Gay in Chantilly or Bockscar in Ohio and verify the museum’s current visitor information. For a flying B-29, Doc’s Wichita hangar offers published admission and cockpit-access options when the aircraft is home, while FIFI must be found through a current tour listing. Treat all hours, prices, routes, display status and event access as date-sensitive details, and confirm them immediately before leaving.
