If an online exchange is unavailable, start with your electric utility or state energy office, then contact your municipality or public-works department. Ask about appliance take-back, bulky-item pickup, transfer-station drop-off and any appointment, preparation or fee requirements. Retailers, local appliance recyclers and scrap-metal recyclers are additional options. For refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners and dehumidifiers, confirm how the provider recovers refrigerant and removes hazardous components before you schedule service.

Choose the offline route that fits your appliance

No single disposal route works everywhere. Acceptance, pickup areas, fees, rebates and preparation rules depend on your location and the appliance type. National guidance is strongest for refrigerated equipment; rules for ovens, washers, dryers, dishwashers and other appliances can differ.

Route What to ask Best use
Electric utility or state energy office Is the program operating in my ZIP code? Is there an age, size or working-condition requirement? Does it provide pickup, a bounty or a utility-bill credit? Refrigerators and freezers, especially when an energy-efficiency program is available
Municipal waste or public-works department Is bulky-item collection available? Is an appointment required? Are there collection days, charges or transfer-station rules? Must refrigerant be recovered first? Residents who need an official pickup or local drop-off
Retailer or manufacturer Does delivery include removal? Is there a removal fee? Where is the old unit taken? Is a voucher or drop-off option offered? Replacing an appliance at the same time
Local appliance or scrap-metal recycler Do you accept this exact model? Do you pick up? What does it cost? Must a refrigerated appliance arrive with refrigerant recovered? Direct pickup or drop-off when public programs are unavailable
EPA RAD-partner program Is a participating program serving my area, and what are its current terms? Refrigerated appliances when a local partner is listed

Use the ENERGY STAR refrigerator and freezer recycling directory to look for utility or other program options. EPA’s appliance-disposal guidance also describes municipal, retailer and recycler routes. Program participation can change, so verify details directly with the provider.

1. Check your utility or state energy office first

Utilities and state energy-efficiency organizations sometimes operate refrigerator or freezer recycling programs. A program may pay a cash reward, provide a “bounty” or issue a credit on your utility bill. Some limit participation by service territory, appliance age, dimensions, working condition or number of units.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What to confirm before applying

  • Whether your address is in the service area.
  • Which appliance types, brands, dimensions and conditions are accepted.
  • Whether the unit must be empty, unplugged or accessible at ground level.
  • Whether pickup is included or you must deliver the appliance.
  • The amount and form of any payment or bill credit, and when it is issued.
  • Whether the program accepts window air conditioners or dehumidifiers in addition to refrigerators and freezers.

The archived EPA RAD consumer guidance also points consumers toward utility and bounty programs, but local program pages are the authority for current eligibility and scheduling. Check the provider’s terms rather than assuming an incentive is available.

2. Ask your municipality about bulky-waste service

Your city, county or regional waste department may collect large appliances at the curb, require an appointment or direct you to a transfer station. The responsible office may be called solid waste, sanitation, environmental services or public works.

Questions to ask the waste department

  1. “Do you accept my exact appliance type and model?” Name whether it is a refrigerator, freezer, window air conditioner, dehumidifier, washer, dryer, dishwasher, range or another item.
  2. “Is pickup available at my address, and how do I book it?” Ask about online forms, phone appointments, collection days and cancellation rules.
  3. “Can I drop it at a transfer station or household hazardous-waste site?” Confirm opening hours, residency requirements, vehicle limits and unloading procedures.
  4. “Is there a fee?” Ask whether the charge is per item, included in a waste-service bill or waived for certain residents.
  5. “For refrigerated equipment, must a certified technician recover the refrigerant before you accept it?”

Do not leave an appliance at the curb without confirming the route. EPA warns that curbside items can be landfilled or otherwise handled unsafely. A scheduled municipal collection or verified recycler gives you a better chance of proper recovery.

3. Use retailer or manufacturer removal when replacing the unit

When you buy a replacement, ask the seller whether delivery includes removal of the old appliance. Some retailers offer haul-away with a new-equipment purchase, while others charge separately, limit the service to certain products or provide a drop-off voucher. Ask where the old unit goes and whether the service includes refrigerant recovery for a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner or dehumidifier.

Before delivery day

  • Measure doors, hallways and stairs so the crew can remove the appliance safely.
  • Empty food, water, ice and detergent; defrost and dry refrigerated units.
  • Disconnect water, gas and electrical connections using the appliance manual or a qualified professional.
  • Confirm whether the crew will remove doors or handles if necessary and whether you must arrange that work.
  • Get the removal price and accepted-item list in writing on the order or appointment.

A delivery crew’s removal service is not automatically the same as certified recycling. Ask what happens after pickup, particularly for equipment containing refrigerant or other hazardous components.

4. Contact a local appliance or scrap-metal recycler

Search for a local appliance recycler or scrap-metal recycler and call before transporting anything. Facilities often accept refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges or dishwashers, but the list varies. Some collect only metal appliances; others handle refrigerated equipment if the refrigerant is recovered first.

Verify these details

  • Exact accepted appliance types, dimensions and quantities.
  • Pickup radius, access requirements and whether stairs or tight spaces incur a charge.
  • Drop-off hours, unloading assistance and residency or identification requirements.
  • Fees, rebates or payments, including whether they depend on scrap value.
  • Whether the appliance must be empty, disconnected, defrosted or secured for transport.
  • Who recovers refrigerant and oil, and how mercury, contaminated oil, PCBs or other hazardous components are removed.
  • What materials are recycled and what is sent for disposal.

Ask for the facility’s current instructions by email or text if possible. A listing or phone promise is not proof that a particular model is accepted on the day you arrive.

Why refrigerant handling matters

Refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners and dehumidifiers can contain refrigerants and other potentially hazardous materials. Older household units historically used ozone-depleting refrigerants; newer units may use hydrofluorocarbons. EPA says they may also contain mercury, contaminated oils or PCBs.

Proper appliance recycling generally involves recovering refrigerant and oil, removing hazardous components, and then shredding the unit. Metals are typically separated for recycling. Glass, plastics and polyurethane foam are typically landfilled, although a particular facility may use different processes. Ask the provider what it actually does rather than assuming every recycler follows the same sequence.

EPA explains that a professional may be needed when a municipality requires refrigerant recovery before pickup. Do not puncture, cut, drain or remove a sealed-system component yourself. Use a qualified service provider when local instructions require recovery before the appliance is accepted.

EPA estimates that 11–13 million refrigerated household appliances reach end of life annually. ENERGY STAR says an average refrigerator aged 10 years or older contains more than 120 pounds of recyclable steel. Those figures describe the national scale and a generalized older refrigerator; they do not predict the contents or value of your particular unit. See EPA’s appliance-disposal guidance and ENERGY STAR’s recycling options for the underlying explanations.

Prepare the appliance without creating a hazard

Preparation depends on the item and the collector’s rules. Follow the provider’s instructions first. These general checks help you avoid a rejected pickup:

  • Defrost refrigerators and freezers, drain accessible water and dry the interior.
  • Unplug the appliance only when it is safe to do so; have a qualified person disconnect gas, hardwired electrical or plumbing connections.
  • Secure shelves, racks, doors and cords for transport. Do not tape a refrigerator door shut if the collector requires ventilation or has a different safety rule; ask first.
  • Keep children and pets away from an appliance awaiting pickup, especially one with a closing door.
  • Do not place chemicals, batteries or other household hazardous waste inside the appliance.
  • Do not remove refrigerant, compressors or other sealed-system parts unless a qualified professional is performing the work.

For a transfer-station drop-off, ask whether staff or the driver will unload the item. Use a suitable vehicle, secure the appliance upright when required by the provider and avoid lifting a heavy unit alone.

Compare pickup, drop-off, rebates and fees

When several routes are available, compare the practical outcome rather than choosing on price alone.

Decision factor Why it matters How to verify
Acceptance A provider may take a refrigerator but reject a window air conditioner, built-in appliance or damaged unit. Give the model, dimensions and condition before booking.
Access Pickup may exclude stairs, basements, narrow paths or locations without a safe loading area. Describe the route from the appliance to the truck and ask about extra charges.
Cost or incentive A free service, bill credit, bounty or scrap payment can have eligibility limits; another provider may charge a haul-away fee. Request the total amount, payment timing and any surcharges.
Preparation Defrosting, disconnection, emptying or prior refrigerant recovery may be mandatory. Ask for a written checklist and the deadline for completing it.
Environmental handling Refrigerant and hazardous components need controlled recovery before shredding. Ask who performs recovery and what happens to the unit afterward.

National sources cannot establish a current local price or schedule. Treat any quoted cost or incentive as location-specific and confirm it at booking.

“I need to recycle a [appliance type], model [model], in [city or ZIP code]. Do you accept it? Is pickup or drop-off available? Do I need an appointment or special preparation? What is the total fee or incentive? If it contains refrigerant, who recovers it and how are hazardous components handled?”

Record the representative’s name, appointment number, accepted-item confirmation and any preparation instructions. If the provider cannot answer how refrigerant is handled, contact another route before surrendering the appliance.

When no program appears to be available

  1. Call the municipal waste or public-works office even if its website has no appliance page; ask which regional transfer station or contractor serves your address.
  2. Check the utility serving the property and the state energy office for a refrigerator or freezer recycling program.
  3. Call two or more local appliance or scrap-metal recyclers and describe the exact item, condition and access route.
  4. If you are buying a replacement, ask the retailer about delivery removal and downstream recycling.
  5. For refrigerated equipment, arrange professional refrigerant recovery when the accepting facility requires it.
  6. Keep the appliance secured and out of the weather until a confirmed appointment or drop-off is available.

The EPA RAD consumer information describes utilities, municipal pickup and local scrap-metal recyclers as fallback paths when a RAD partner is not available. That page is an archived EPA snapshot, so verify every current local term directly with the provider.

What to expect from responsible recycling

EPA’s consumer guidance emphasizes that appliance owners play a critical role in preventing emissions of ozone-depleting substances and hydrofluorocarbons through proper disposal. A responsible provider should be able to explain its recovery process and direct you to the correct preparation steps. No special sticker is required for disposal under the cited EPA guidance, although a municipality or recycler may impose its own labeling or scheduling rule.

For a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner or dehumidifier, the key checkpoint is controlled refrigerant recovery. For other appliances, focus on acceptance, safe disconnection, pickup access and the facility’s metal-recycling process. In every case, confirm the exact item, service terms and final destination before handing it over.
