In the United States, start with your city or county solid-waste authority to find an electronics drop-off or household hazardous waste program. If that is not convenient, check retailer and TV-manufacturer take-back options. Before you travel, confirm that the program accepts your TV’s type and size, whether it charges a fee, and whether pickup is available; rules and services vary by location.
Where can you take a flat-screen TV?
Start with your local waste authority
Search your city or county solid-waste website for electronics recycling, e-waste drop-off, or household hazardous waste collection. Some authorities publish maps or lists of approved locations. For example, Kent County, Michigan, directs residents to designated electronics drop-off locations and says flat-screen TVs do not belong in its curbside single-stream recycling cart or trash can. That is a local rule, not a nationwide one.
Check retailer and manufacturer programs
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists retailer and manufacturer programs as possible routes for electronics recycling, including Best Buy and manufacturer take-back options. These are leads, not a guarantee that a particular store or manufacturer currently accepts your TV. Check the program’s current terms for your location, device, and screen size before arranging transport.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAsk a reuse organization about working TVs
If the TV still works, ask local donation or reuse organizations whether they accept televisions and what condition or age requirements apply. Do not assume that a charity will take it; acceptance policies differ. If donation is not an option, use a local electronics collection or an applicable take-back program.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to confirm the right option before you go
- Find the program: Use your city or county waste authority’s electronics collection information, or check retailer and manufacturer take-back details.
- Describe the TV: Ask whether the site accepts flat-screen televisions and your specific type and size. Do not assume a program that takes small electronics also takes TVs.
- Confirm the terms: Ask about fees, appointment requirements, residency limits, proof-of-purchase conditions, and whether drop-off or pickup is offered.
- Follow preparation instructions: Ask whether the TV must be disconnected, packed, or otherwise prepared, and whether removable batteries need separate handling.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency advises residents to check its collection-site map and contact a collector to verify device acceptance; fees may apply at some retail, private-network, and program sites. Calling ahead can prevent a rejected load or an unexpected charge.
What if the TV is too large to transport?
Ask your local authority, retailer, or manufacturer whether it offers scheduled pickup or haul-away. Confirm any fee and whether pickup depends on buying a replacement TV or meeting other conditions. The availability and terms of these services are not universal, so verify them directly with the program serving your address.

How to prepare a TV for donation or recycling
- Remove personal information: If the TV has connected accounts, apps, or saved network details, use its reset or account-removal options before donation or recycling. The EPA recommends deleting personal information from electronics before passing them on.
- Handle batteries separately when required: Remove a battery only if it is designed to be removable and the collection program instructs you to do so. Follow local directions for its disposal. The EPA says lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them should not go in household garbage or municipal recycling bins.
- Keep the TV intact unless instructed otherwise: Follow the receiving program’s preparation rules rather than dismantling the set yourself.
How to assess an electronics recycler
If you want added assurance about a recycler’s practices, look for facilities certified to the R2 or e-Stewards standards. The EPA explains that these standards address environmental, worker-health, and security practices, including management of downstream materials. Certification does not establish that a facility accepts your TV or offers a particular service, so check its accepted items and terms as well. EPA’s listing is informational and does not constitute an endorsement.

Do not apply CRT disposal guidance to flat-screen TVs
Older cathode-ray-tube (CRT) televisions are different from flat-screen sets. The EPA says older CRT TVs and monitors contain an average of four pounds of lead and may require special handling; that figure applies to CRT devices, not flat-screen TVs. Check local instructions for any television you are unsure how to identify.
